Posted September 19, 201014 yr UK download sales pass landmark Source: MW 09:12 | Thursday September 16, 2010 More than half a billion downloads have now been sold in the UK according to the Official Charts Company, as digital music sales continue to boom. The OCC says the 500 millionth download was bought last month. The number equates to eight tracks for every Briton; two albums per UK household or 42,000 60GB MP3 players. What is more, OCC managing director Martin Talbot says 2010 will be another record period for downloads: by the end of August more than 100m downloads had been bought this year in the UK; if sales continue to grow at the current rate, the number of downloads for the full year should reach 170m. “The surpassing of this latest landmark highlights just how enthusiastically music consumers have taken to legitimate music download services in the UK,” Talbot adds. “Sales are continuing to grow too, thanks to the popularity of artists such as Owl City, Eminem, Usher, Katy Perry and Rihanna.” The biggest selling download to date in the UK is Black-Eyed Peas’ I Gotta Feeling, which became the first download to sell a million copies back in June.
