EMAP is struggling and sales for Q Magazine (as well as FHM and Max Power) have slumped drastically. So do you think that Q Magazine will go the same way as Smash Hits?

Or should it be closed with funds being given over to successes like Zoo and Closer?

Yes.

Q magazine has been going downhill fast since it's team of staff writers that made it a success in the late 1980s to mid 1990s David Hepworth/Danny Kelly/Tom Hibbert/Ian Cranna, etc moved onto other things - like The Word, Mojo & Uncut magazines.

The Word magazine is "the new Q" magazine IMHO.

q isnt nearly as important as it used to be,yes its a good magazine but there are times lately when the magazine fails to deliver the goods as it lacks the indepth outlook it once had,

i know for me most of the stuff q cover is widely available on the internet, and for me q costs almost e8 here in ireland which in may peoples minds is a bit harsh to pay for a magazine

i think it has a bit of time left in it yet,but if it continues to slump it could very well go the same way as smash hits

Q is a very poor magazine, it should be closed immediately. But rather than put funds into tripe like Zoo and Closer (flavours of the month in the current climes) I reckon they should close the magazine and spend all the money on a big party.

Or bring Select Magazine back in it's 1992 incarnation...not when it went all $h!te in 1996.

I do think Q has gone downhill and I only started buying it last summer! But I still think it's better than Word, that hardly ever has anything in that appeals to me at all. And NME is much worse than Q is, that should be ditched first...

Well in that case i might actaully read it next time rather than just listening to the CDs (and reading the Top 10 list  )

However the NME is owned by Time Warner (the AOL/Film folks not the record label) they wont be affected by problems at EMAP.

Do you read Blender? some say its the new Q. Its only about acts that are charting in America at the moment, but they might launch ity over here as its Maxim/Dennis Publishing (run by famous British hippy bloke that was first person to use the C word on primetime TV)

I've read Blender when I've gone into my local Borders store out of town.

Blender magazine reminds me of Heat magazine except it is talking almost entirely about music.

I hope not, I buy Q magazine every month - will be gutted if it goes! :(

xXx

It's 4 or 5 issues they're giving free cds, and they are quite good!

Q is poor every time it does those useless charts of... the best album of all the time, the best rock single, the best whaterver else...

But it's still good !!! And I think it will celebrate its 20th anniversary in October ! :o

well i think its getting to the point where everything (apart from Zoo) has to have somekind of freeby on the cover. I for one get Uncut and The Word on subs just for the CD. In the case of The Word I think i only read the top ten list :o

like Newspapers, they've worked out that their circulation increases when they have a covermount, so they have gone overboard.

this week you can get a proper kosher Kool and The Gang album with Liberty X and other singing on it (tracks from the album from 2004)

and to pick up this week you've got toons in the mirror, audio books in the Times and lean italian in the Mail.

I'm the opposite - I haven't taken the sellophane off the Uncut CD this month yet - probably won't either. I bought it for the magazine to cure boredom.

Magazines should concentrate on good content rather than "free" CDs. We've had a similar discussion in the Alan McGee thread...I'm getting sick of CD boxes cluttering up everywhere. Why don't they print a code in the magazine to give access to a "hidden" section of their website where people can stream each free track and then download the one or two they want to keep?

Yes, people will just post the code on web forums each month - but that's beside the point.

The cost of producing cover mounted CDs every month surely increases costs...which could be better used in

a. keeping the magazine afloat

b. hiring better writers

Richie,

I think you have hit the nail on the head - I totally agree with you.

However the NME is owned by Time Warner (the AOL/Film folks not the record label)

Actually they were the same company, but Time Warner sold off its music making branch to investors.

well if you really really really want to be correct about it i think you want to mention Edgar Bronfman Jr, the Seagram whiskey man who was involved with the Polygram/MCA/Universal grouping and who was influential in the Vivendi Universal merger. Also meybe you needed to ellaborate on the backwards and fordwarding of the EMI/Warner Music taky-over and merging scrum

however just to keep it simple without going into the whole back story of the company all you needed to know was Time Warner at this moment dont own Warner Brothers and havent done for a few years.

Does anyone actually bother with Music Magazines anymore?

I thought they all died down when Smash Hits & Top Of The Pops had Mcfly on there covers every week :puke2:

I think Q should be kept as Q and NME are the music magazines that I always buy and it's a pretty great magazine, however they should lower the price a bit and then more people would probably buy it?
