July 17, 200619 yr Author 62 Dubstar - Stars (1995 UK#40 & 1996 UK#15) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q92fm8Aojpk.swf This subline electronic synth-pop song is taken from the Geordie trio's wonderful debut album Disgraceful - which is well worth buying in a second hand store if you can find a copy.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 61 Goldfrapp - Lovely Head (2001 Did not chart) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sEIlC5UAieE.swf The debut single which featured the vocal talent of Alison Goldfrapp taken from their divine debut album Felt Mountain. I have all three albums & they are an example of an act who have gone downhill musically with increasing musical success.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 60 Deee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart (1990 UK#2, US#4) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKTCW4oxS6I.swf This track famously sold the same number of copies as the Steve Miller Band - The Joker yet was stuck at #2 due to a stupid rule allowing no ties in the UK chart at the time, so The Joker was #1 as it had a bigger increase in record sales from the previous week.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 59 David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes (1980 UK#1) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r44OFO-MNPo.swf This seminal track being the sequal to Space Oddity featuring his Major Tom character, was also his 2nd UK#1 hit of his career, it was taken from Scary Monsters (& Super Creeps) album, regarded by most critics & fans as his last truly brilliant album of his career.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 58 Adventures - Broken Land (1988 UK#20) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4YlxlAwk5-w.swf How did a song like this only make #20 when pap like Bros, Brother Beyond, Sinitta, Rick Astley, Kylie (when she was rubbish) & Jason Donovan dominate the charts is an absolute mystery to me?
July 17, 200619 yr Author 57 Beastie Boys - Hey Ladies (1989 UK Flop, US#36) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbmlhOOoNiI.swf In 1987 The Beastie Boys released a rubbish (IMHO) album called Licensed To Ill featuring dreadful good-time frat-brat-rant anthems such as Fight For Your Right (To Party), No Sleep To Brooklin, Girls, Crafty & She's On It including lame samples of old Led Zeppelin riffs which sold by the millions. In 1989 they released the innovative critically acclaimed Paul's Boutique album - which bombed. However it was clearly ahead of it's time with Beck & Norman Cook (FatBoy Slim) admitting their love of this album. This track was taken from it as a lead single.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 56 A-ha - Summer Moved On (2000 UK#33) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZp8_yxhxYg.swf After Take On Me in 1985 A-ha had a period of success until they split up in 1993. However they reformed for the Nobel peace awards in 1999 & this was their comeback single which was a monster hit all over Europe except in the UK. However Nick Rhodes has admitted their comeback success was one of the factors in the original Duran Duran reforming.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 55 The Smiths - This Charming Man (1983 UK#25, 1992 UK#8) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wv9XSJsjR6Y.swf The second single from the greatest British Band of the 1980s © Noel Gallagher, Michael Stipe & first Top40 hit thanks to the support of the late John Peel.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 54 Suede - The Wild Ones (1994 UK#18) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41dzNBQq96M.swf This seminal track from their second & best album Dog Man Star is an example of what Butler/Anderson partnership could have achieved if they'd only "Stay Together".
July 17, 200619 yr Author 53 Robbie Williams - Better Man (2000 Never a single) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVCSM7ngu00.swf The British public voted Angels the best British song of the last 25 years. What rubbish - it is not even the best Robbie Williams ballad - this Oz/New Zealand 2000 Xmas #1 from Sing When You're Winning is.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 52 Billy Joel - Piano Man (1973 US#25) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73U4tfs0zYI.swf This classic was Billy Joel's breakthrough hit & like his British equivalent (Elton John - Your Song) it will remain his signature tune in his native America.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 51 Kinks - Days (1968 UK#12) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGvI0l_eh7Y.swf This is a classic. Kirsty MacColl's version of it in 1988 was a great cover as well. Ray Davies is the quintessential English singer songwriter of all-time.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 50 Soft Cell - Bedsitter (1981 UK#4) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFaIhDLb_NE.swf Marc Almond & Dave Ball's follow up to Tainted Love - a neglected masterpiece.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 49 Pet Shop Boys - Left To My Own Devices (1988 UK#4, US #84) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0W2XUC27Z0A.swf This dance classic from their 1988 Introspective album when they were at their creative & commercial peak "Che Guevara & Debussey to a Disco beat" = lyrically genius.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 48 Chic - Le Freak (1978 UK#7 US#1) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Putity0ZMl8.swf This Disco classic from Nile Rodgers & (the late) Bernhard Edwards started off with slightly ruder lyrics for the title after they were refused entry to New York's Studio 54.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 47 Blur - PopScene (1992 UK#32) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py2UKJvVOAo.swf The British record public are stupid. Exhibit #4317 - this song only made #32. It is in my opinion their best single & led the band to nearly be dropped. It has never appeared on any of their albums yet it will probably remain the best thing that Damon Albarn will ever write & record.
July 17, 200619 yr Author 46 INXS - Never Tear Us Apart (1988 UK#24, US#7) [flash=450,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuFoOW39Lxw.swf This ballad from Kick also made #2 in their native Australia, where Michael Hutchence had to settle for Kylie Minogue being on top (but probably not for the last time in his life ;) ). Sadly after his "suicide" in 1997 this song did top the Australian chart in 1997 (knocking Eton John's Candle in The Wind off the top) & remains the most played song at funerals Down Under (well it IS a better song than Robbie Williams' Angels isn't it?)
