It certainly has no beat, no riffs and no tune! :o

Is this a type of sound that you're interested in then? I think it's extremely difficult to make something like that and hold any interest level for more than a minute or so.

Well my interest was perked when I was in Tower Records last year and they had Sunno))) playing and I found it very refreshing, exhilarating almost. I had to ask who it was. I looked them up when I got home and started to read up on drone metal.

It's quite avant garde and influenced by the composer Ligeti of which my composer mate is a huge fan.

So I opened up Reason this morning and started messing with one note and distorting it and twisting it and using all sort sorts of effects on it. It took about half an hour.

I'm getting people saying it reminds them of Aphex Twin

I must admit that I'm not as familiar with Aphex Twin as I should be, the obvious singles aside.

I actually find this kind of music quite interesting in that I end up listening to it and trying to find meanings and subtleties that, I suspect, often just aren't there with most drone acts. I like it when they add sparse beats etc to add a bit of variance and something to keep the interest levels up.

You see there's purists that would object if I added strings or pads. I guess when one makes music one has to be brave and not pander to what people who are not fans of a genre want to hear.

Then again you have to be aware of not being too indulgent and be aware of the wider musical world.

I like it although there seems to be too much going on to be true drone.

But then I like doom drone and the best word to describe that at times is tectonic.

I think this does sound more like ambient/electronica... much like Aphex Twin.

Too much? It's one note manipulated. Maybe I need to space out the changes more but that would be truly boring.

Drones aren't necessarily one note but more a repetition of long sustained notes or musical phrases.
