October 12, 201014 yr First of all, well done on singling out the brilliant WAYBSRN? for youtube treatment. I love that record - almost certainly in my all time top 50 (if I could ever be bothered to chart such a thing). I like a lot of these still as I was 11 at the time and songs at that age, I find, stick with you so much more easily...so here's some special mentions. 04. (3) Womack And Womack - Teardrops Just a brilliant dance / soul record - me and mate loved this when it came on Top of the Pops. 09. (8) Inner City Featuring Kevin Saunderson - Big Fun I prefer 'Good Life' as it has more intensity, but 'Big Fun' was also a brilliant early dance record. 19.(NE) Erasure - A Little Respect That this record seems to have lasted a lot longer in the public conscience than many of their bigger hits is no surprise - brilliant, plain pop, eminently singable and rare in that it's been covered by two different acts since (Bjorn Again and Wheatus). 21.(14) Bomb The Bass - Megablast/Don't Make Me Wait I think the AA side used to get a lot more play on the music shows - two great follow-ups to Beat Dis and, of course, Megablast sampled Assault on Precinct 13 and was the in-game music for the computer game Xenon 2. 26.(17) Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour Another record which has long stayed in the hearts and minds of future generations. I remember there was a cover of this by indie also-rans Joyrider in the mid-90s...couldn't touch this though. 29.(33) Hazell Dean - Turn It Into Love I loved this when I was young because the video showed Hazell in one of those video booths 'making' the video live. I heard it again a few years ago...shudder! Wouldn't mind seeing the vid again though. 34.(NE) Wee Papa Girl Rappers - Wee Rule Utterly stupid pop-rap with calls of 'mega mega dumpling' all over the place. But catchy as hell and, yes, I still really enjoy listening to it. 42.(NE) The Wedding Present - Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now? The finest example of jangle pop ever committed to vinyl. Yes Mr Morrissey! Yes, the best! 45.(41) Royal House - Can You Party Brilliant house record - can't tell if it's better with or without the Jungle Brothers rap... 47.(40) The Wonder Stuff - It's Yer Money I'm After Baby Who didn't love The Wonder Stuff? Great runaround indie pop nonsesne. 49.(35) BVSMP - I Need You One hit wonders I think - I didn't think much of it at the time but subsequently loved it when I got the Greatest Hits of 88 compilation for Christmas. 53.(54) Julian Cope - Charlotte Anne Copey was still a pop star, technically, and had just had a big hit with 'World Shut Your Mouth'. This is a better song but wasn't as popular. He pretty much ended up a bit of a pop outcast from here on.
October 13, 201014 yr I like both versions but Kylies original version of Turn It Into Love is far superior
October 14, 201014 yr I was only 4 at the time, but lets have a stab! 01. (1) The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother {re-issue} YUCK! 02. (2) Phil Collins - Groovy Kind Of Love No thanks... 03.(NE) U2 - Desire I dislike U2 intensely and Bono is a c**t 04. (3) Womack And Womack - Teardrops Vastly over-rated and boring I always thought! 05. (4) Bill Withers - Lovely Day {1988 remix} Annoying 06. (5) Jason Donovan - Nothing Can Divide Us I love the SAW sound, bot Jason can take a hike! 07. (9) Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing Great track and iconic British act! 08.(24) Whitney Houston - One Moment In Time Great track! $h!t! 09. (8) Inner City Featuring Kevin Saunderson - Big Fun OMFG!!! Possibly the greatest track of 88, I too love 'Good Life' but this just about pips it for me, that synth gives my goosebumps! 10.(16) Rick Astley - She Wants To Dance With Me Never cared for Rick... And of the rest, I like 16.(10) Yazz And The Plastic Population - The Only Way Is Up Was this 88's best seller? An achievement normally owned by a novelty of charity record so kudos to Yazz. What is she doing now though...???19.(NE) Erasure - A Little Respect I prefer 'Sometimes' but don't particularly mind this 21.(14) Bomb The Bass - Megablast/Don't Make Me Wait 22.(22) Salt-N-Pepa Featuring EU - Shake Your Thang (It's Your Thing) 23.(13) Brother Beyond - The Harder I Try Guilty pleasure, lead singer was very easy on the eye.. ;) 28.(31) Bananarama - Love Truth And Honesty No gem, but this is the sound of Bananarama pushing Waterman to the peaks of his songwriting ability. 29.(33) Hazell Dean - Turn It Into Love I actually don't really like this version, but the original Kylie version is a cult gay classic! 45.(41) Royal House - Can You Party This was infact Todd Terry! 73.(74) Stetsasonic - Talkin' All That Jazz Always guaranteed to find a feel good hip hop tracks in any last 80s list, usually found in the bottom end! 81.(RE) Funky Worm - Hustle! (To The Music...)
October 14, 201014 yr Ye Gods what a dire Top 10, just as well there was some good stuff further down the chart 01. (1) The Hollies - He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother {re-issue} This is just an incredibly boring song that seems to go on forever 02. (2) Phil Collins - Groovy Kind Of Love The above x2 03.(NE) U2 - Desire Bono is indeed a messianic twat but Desire is a good record 04. (3) Womack And Womack - Teardrops I absolutely loathed this at the time but somehow I love The XX cover 05. (4) Bill Withers - Lovely Day {1988 remix} see comment for The Hollies 06. (5) Jason Donovan - Nothing Can Divide Us Not even worth considering 07. (9) Pet Shop Boys - Domino Dancing Never got into this - one of their lesser singles 08.(24) Whitney Houston - One Moment In Time Oh Jesus.... 09. (8) Inner City Featuring Kevin Saunderson - Big Fun Not as good as Good Life but definitely the best record in the Top 10 10.(16) Rick Astley - She Wants To Dance With Me p*** off tea boy These are the ones I like (although there are some right guilty pleasures in here 11.(12) The Proclaimers - I'm Gonna Be 12. (7) Yello - The Race 17.(18) Bon Jovi - Bad Medicine I think Bon Jovi is a bigger twat than Bono but their 80s hits still have a nostalgic cheese value 20.(NE) Duran Duran - I Don't Want Your Love 26.(17) Jane Wiedlin - Rush Hour 28.(31) Bananarama - Love Truth And Honesty 30.(30) Transvision Vamp - Revolution Baby 35.(34) Belinda Carlisle - World Without You 36.(28) Marc Almond - Tears Run Rings Gorgeous gorgeous tune 42.(NE) The Wedding Present - Why Are You Being So Reasonable Now? 44.(45) The Beatmasters With PP Arnold - Burn It Up I still don't understand why tis wasn't massive -kJWk0El6go 46.(NE) Gary Numan - New Anger 47.(40) The Wonder Stuff - It's Yer Money I'm After Baby 52.(39) Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine 53.(54) Julian Cope - Charlotte Anne 56.(56) Jolly Roger - Acid Man Lovely squelchy acid noises 64.(58) Baby Ford - Oochy Koochy Fantastic dance track 66.(62) Associates - Heart Of Glass Billy MacKenzie was a true artist and even this Blondie cover pisses on all of the top 10
