The Flashback to October 1979

The Top TV back then: With no ITV, because of that 11 week stike that kept them off the air from August to November 1979

01 TO THE MANOR BORN 24.00 the first series of the sitcom with Penelope Keith & Peter Bowles. Showing on Sunday nights

02 LARRY GRAYSON'S GENERATION GAME 23.60 Larry, Isla, the conveyor belt & a host of stars popping in

03 BLANKETY BLANK 23.30 Terry Wogan as the best host of the panel game. Showing on Thursdays at 7.55pm

04 MIKE YARWOOD IN PERSONS 22.30 Saturday night impressions at their best with the best impressionist ever in Mike

05 LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE 21.90 Thursday 9.25pm for the 5th series, always shown late in those days because of innuendo & swearing

06 MASTERMIND 21.90 Magnus Magnusson hosts the 7th series of the famous chair quiz

07 CITIZEN SMITH 21.80 Robert Lyndsay in the "Come The Revolution" sitcom, which basically became "Only Fools & Horses", after a bit of "Minder" was nicked

08 PETROCELLI 21.70 Barry Newman in the US legal drama. Could do with a repeat this one

09 SECRET ARMY 21.60 the drama based around the Belgian resistance during World War II with Bernard Hepton, Angela Richards, & Clifford Rose

10 SYKES 21.20 Eric, Hattie, & Corky in the last series of the sitcom, & probably the best. This was one of the worst episodes though. "The Stay At Home Holiday". Eric & Hattie get locked out, & leave their passports at Sebastapol Terrace.

11 RINGS ON THEIR FINGERS 21.00 the 2nd series with Diane Keen & Martin Jarvis in the I wanted get married, he doesn't sitcom. In this series, they do marry

12 SOME MOTHER'S DO AVE EM 20.30 a repeat of the hapless Frank Spencer sitcom, aided as ever by his just as bad wife "Betty"

13 SHOESTRING 20.30 Trevor Eve as the light-hearted Radio/Detective star

14 STAR TREK 20.30 Wednesday night around 7.20 for the campish sci-fi series, heading towards the laughable Batman series in it's later years

15 NINE O'CLOCK NEWS 20.20 Angela Rippon reads

16 ANGELS 20.10 the twice weekly serial come soap/hospital drama, that basically became Eastenders unfortunately

17 DR WHO 19.50 & the final episode of "The City Of Death" which I believe I'm right in saying had the biggest viewing figures, for any episode. Although, only because of the ITV strike, as the series viewers peaked 3 years earlier

18 TOP OF THE POPS 19.40 Dave Lee Travis hosts. Funnily enough, on this show the Sex Pistols are shown performing Rock Around The Clock. Where as the double A sided "Great Rock N Roll Swindle" hit never actually played on the Radio One top 40 by Tony Blackburn I don't believe, as it was full of poison & swearing

19 INTERNATIONAL SHOW JUMPING 18.90 nicked by the BBC, while ITV were on strike!

20 ROOTS - The Next Generation 18.70 the sequel to Roots, following on from the 1880s & the story of the Alex Haley family

The Top Albums in Oct 1979: the 3rd of 5 weeks for The Police with 2 albums in the 20, & a touch of a rock block at 11 & 12 & 18.

The Top Singles in Oct 1979 with a surprise number one, maybe! One of those that doesn't get played these days. Even Gold don't play it...mind you they don't tend to play much at all. For instance, recently I was listening to Gold's Request Show with some non-chalant called Dean Martin (a likey name). Some chappy rang in & requested The Last Waltz, that enormous million seller from 1967...surprise surprise they never played it! Doesn't make you sick, to think these boring, tedious stations exist? The same 200 tracks going around 24/7! I looked at their website, & they have a list of what they've played from the last 2 weeks. Have a look, & see how many times they play Blockbuster in the given fortnight...quite mindboggling.

Anyway 1979, great year for music & my fav being Every Day Hurts & Sad Cafe. They certainly had problems following it up though, but did manage with My Oh My in 1980, which sounded a bit Rolling Stone-ish.

Oh no, get me the cream...the big Boyle's back! :teresa: Cheryl will definately be next week's number one album seller. I still edge my bets on Rumer for 2nd place, closely followed by Bon Jovi. Rather disappointing album from KOL, I found...So will they fall to number 4 next week?

I reckon next week's albums:

1 Chezza

2 Bon Jovi

3 KOL

4 Rumer

5 Jamiroquai

3-5 could be in any order but I definitely think a Chezza and Bon Jovi top 2

Also, I'm pretty sure The Flood has been moved forward to the 8th, and Progress to the 15th. I think Westlife have also changed their release dates but I don't know what to. All quite confusing really.

Edited by ~ braysammich ~

Dave - Take That and Westlife's album release dates have swapped around in the last couple of days.

Take That's is now 15th Nov, Westlife's 22nd Nov.

"The Flood" will now be released on 8th Nov.

Really surprised to see JLS Number 1 on the Singles Pre-orders.. Take That and Westlife are ahead of them on both HMV and Amazon

& the last time I checked.. They were not in the top 200 on Itunes, so where are the sales coming from ? :S

Expected Peter Andre to be at least Number 2 with Physical sales this week

Just like we predicted Rihanna has another #2 (it smells a bit round here, what!) Hyped up Take That continues for sure elsewhere & all sorts of hype on putting some crap at Xmas number one. Personally I don't support Facebook, & always turn down any offer to join it. As I believe it's the biggest load of $h!te going & thoroughly dangerous to do so. Perhaps we need a Facebook Campaign to close it down! If I were to start any campaign (as this entire Country is full of hype & various other assorted crap) I'd personally push Public Enemy's "Don't Believe The Hype" as it sums it all up well...I call for a volunteer to start a campaign for Public Enemy as Xmas Number One. Anyone?

It's already in on downloads alone, so we don't include it.

One of my favourite charts from 1979 bar the #1 track, 2 weeks prior to the chart was the first time I got into the charts, listening to Peter Powell at 6pm (Tuesdays), it was also the time when my mum used to start the dinner, my notepad was handy, I was eating and doing the chart at the same time

Top 3 pre-order chart consists of boy bands :o

Thanks for posting Dave

P.S. Petrocelli  Friday nights 9.25pm I was an addict, one of my fave shows at the time. I wish they repeat it.

so Will.i.am, Roll Deep and Tinchy/Taio look the most likely top 10/20 entries next week then- but looks none of them will be number 1, that would probably be Rihanna

Thanks Dave

Ne-Yo and Alexis Jordan too, and maybe Nadine Coyle

I think Peter Andre will be top 15 on sunday.

Not sure about Firework. I wanted KP top 5 again this week! Firework video is fantastic, my fave of hers, just love it!

Thanks Dave

It's that time again... are Hurts anywhere to be seen on pre-order singles?
