Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts

(Thanks to Gavin Ryan)

Singles

Bruno Mars jumps up to No.1 this week with his debut solo single "Just the Way You Are" (DL: 3 to 1) on the ARIA Singles Chart, matching the peak its achieved in Canada, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, England, The U.S. and Scotland. Bruno also becomes the eighth solo male artist to hit the top this year, surpassing last years five No.1’s sometime ago, but “Just the Way You Are” is the 970th No.1 in Australia (1945-2010), and the thirteenth chart-topper for 2010 (this time last year we were up to our 14th).

Bruno is the first Elektra act in almost twenty years to top the chart, and he is only the sixth Elektra act to do so, the previous five were Carly Simon, Queen (with two tracks), Carole Bayer Sager, The Beach Boys and the last Elektra act to do so was Deee-Lite in November 1990 with “Groove is the Heart” (1 week). It’s also the twelfth ‘Just’ to hit No.1, the last being “Just Say So” by Brian McFadden back in April this year, its also the eleventh ‘Way’ to hit the top, the last was only a couple of months ago, Eminem’s Just the Way You Are” (TW-14), plus it’s the fifteenth ‘Are’ to hit the top. And finally, Bruno becomes the 386th American act to hit No.1 here, whilst “Just the Way You Are” is the 634th song performed by an American artist.

Rihanna holds at No.2 for a second week with her former No.1 "Only Girl (in the World)" (DL: 2 hold), and Nelly moves up to a new peak of No.3 with his latest "Just a Dream" (DL: 4 to 3). Last week's No.1 debut for P!nk has dropped down to No.4 with “Raise Your Glass” (DL: 1 to 4) after only a single week at the top (the first time this year), whilst the next four tracks all stay stable for another week, with Mike Posner's "Cooler Than Me" (DL: 5 hold) at No.5, Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" (DL: 6 hold) at No.6, Ce-Lo Green and "F.U." (DL: 9 to 10, and 39 to 36 (clean) at No.7 and B.o.B and Rivers Cuomo with "Magic" (DL: 7 hold) holding at No.8.

Two songs jump up into the Top 10, with the first at No.9 being Zoe Badwi who climbs nine places to score her first Top 10 entry with "Freefallin'" (DL: 18 to 8). Pitbull is no stranger to the Top 10, and climbing six places is his new single "Hey Baby (Drop it to the Floor)" (DL: 14 to 9) which lands at No.10.

NEW PEAKS: Duck Sauce keep making single place movements, and this week they do so again, as "Barbra Streisand" (DL: 16 to 13) is up to a new hieght of No.11. Up eighteen spots to No.15 is the new US No.1 single, "Like a G6" (DL: 30 to 14) from Far East Movement. Eminem and Lil' Wayne jump nine places to No.21 with "No Love" (DL: 31 to 21), and also up nine is current tourist Adam Lambert, whose "If I Had You" (DL: 32 to 27) turns-around and goes back up to No.22, whilst his new single "For Your Entertainment" (DL: 46 to 34) climbs twelve places to No.34. And the other current tourists Paramore climb thirteen places with their older track (32 weeks in the Top100) "The Only Exception" (DL: 43 to 29), which is up again to No.31.

Enrique Iglesias and Nicole Scherzinger take another leap up the ARIA Singles Chart this week with "Heartbeat" (DL: to 25), up fourteen places to No.27. Adrian Lux crept into the Top 50 last week with "Teenage Love", and this week it creeps into the Top 40 at No.40. 3OH!3 climb to a new peak of No.42 with their new single "Double Vision" and up thirty places to No.49 (and scoring their first Top 50 entry) is Swedish House Mafia with their second local single "Miami 2 Ibiza".

Last week Taylor Swift debuted at No.20 with “Speak Now”, the title track from her upcoming third album, which drops to No.51 this week. But she debuts again this week with her ninth ARIA Top 100 Chart entry, "Back to December" (DL: 24 debut), which lands at No.26 first week.

Katy Perry debuts at No.37 with the third single from her "Teenage Dream" album (TW-10) entitled "Firework" (DL: 37 debut). This gives her a song in the Top 20 with "Teenage Dream" (DL: 8 to 11) at No.12, the Top 30 with "California Gurls" (DL: 27 to 33) at No.29, and now a Top 40 placement this week with the new single.

GLEE REPORT CARD: The gang debut at No.50 with their first new track since the Commonwealth Games, meaning that they're back on TV now, so they score a great new debut by landing at No.50 with "Only the Good Die Young", a cover of the Billy Joel 1977 track from "The Stranger" album (single didn’t chart in Australia). The guys are also still on the charts at No.79 with "Toxic", and re-enter at No.77 with their version of "Billionaire".

Below Top 50: Akon climbs to a new peak of No.57 with his latest track "Angel", and right behind him is Kanye West, who is up forteen places to No.58 with his new track "Runaway". Train shuffle up twenty-one places to No.71 with their new song "Save Me, San Francisco". "I Gotta Feeling" is still the oldest song in the Top 100, now up 72 weeks, but one-year anniversaries (52 weeks in Top 100) go to "Little Lion Man" by Mumford & Sons, and Lady GaGa's "Bad Romance".

Brooke Fraser debuted at No.3 with her third album "Flags" last week (TW-13), and the lead single from that album enters this week at No.59, entitled "Something in the Water", it is also the current No.1 single in New Zealand, and is her second ARIA Chart entry, her first being “Lifeline” (HP-56, Sept 2004).

It's not often I get to mention a new Australian act from our capital city, but this week there is one. Canberra dance duo, The Aston Shuffle, are made up of DJ and producers Mikah Freeman and Vance Musgrove, and they debut at No.67 with their fifth single, but first ARIA Top 100 Chart entry, "Your Love".

Jason DeRulo debuts at No.97 with the fifth single from his self-titled album called "The Sky's the Limit". It joins his second and third singles in the Top 100, "Ridin' Solo" at No.89 and "In My Head" re-entering at No.96.

Albums

Sony had a battle on their hands with their two big albums this week, so the winner of course is Sony, but Kings of Leon score the new No.1 album, with John Farnham debuting at No.2. KOL's "Come Around Sundown" lands at the top on Platinum sales, and becomes the bands second No.1, their first "Only By the Night" is up thirty-four places to No.36 this week, it spent fourteen broken weeks at the top, and now takes the groups accumulated weeks at the top to fifteen, placing them at No.33 on the ‘No.1 Artist Albums Tally’ listing, with Split Enz just ahead of them, having also accumulated fifteen weeks at the top from three albums in the early 1980’s.

“Come Around Sundown” is the 621st No.1 in Australia (1965-2010), and the seventeenth No.1 album for 2010 (this time last year were we up to our 16th No.1 album). It’s the sixth album to feature the word ‘Come’ in it’s title, the last being Norah Jones’s “Come Away With Me” (Feb 2003), its only the first time for both ‘Around’ and ‘Sundown’ in a No.1 album title. Kings of Leon album history is listed below...

Robbie Williams rises three places to No.3 with his new Greatest Hits collection "In and Out of Consciousness", and Eminem recovers a place, moving up to No.4 with his "Recovery" album. The Script drop to No.5 with "Science and Faith", and Adam Lambert finally enters the Top 10 (first time in his 31 week charting career), jumping eight places to land at No.6 with "For Your Entertainment". Dropping four places to No.8 is "A Thousand Suns" by Linkin Park; Angus & Julia Stone stay still at No.9 with "Down the Way", and Katy Perry drops three places to No.10 with her "Teenage Dream" album.

Bruno Mars might have landed the No.1 single of the week with "Just the Way You Are", but he also scores a Top 10 debut with his solo album "Doo-Wops and Hooligans" which comes in at No.7. The album entered at No.3 in the US and No.6 in Canada.

With Crowded House moving to Universal Music, their old label Capitol (thru EMI) has issued a second Greatest Hits collection entitled "The Very Very Best of Crowded House", which debuts at No.11 this week, ten places lower than their original GH package "Recurring Dream" entered at back in July of 1996. This new best of has nineteen tracks, plus their is also a deluxe edition with contains 32 songs.

Mirusia is up twenty-eight places this week with her album "Always & Forever". The second biggest drop in ARIA No.1 history occurs this week, as last weeks No.1 "There is a Hell..." by Bring Me the Horizon falls from the top spot to No.20, the biggest drop prior to that was for Kiss and their album "Psycho Circus" which fell to No.33 in it's second week on the charts. Paramore's tour has helped their former No.1 "Brand New Eyes" to jump up ten places to No.22, and up eight places to No.23 is Usher's "Raymond V. Raymond". Metallica see three albums in the chart this week, "Six Feet Down Under" is at No.31, their 'black album' "Metallica" is up thirty-four places to No.35, and re-entering at No.64 is their last studio album "Death Magnetic".

Am loving Nelly and Pink at the moment...Bruno Mars at #1 is a little odd and KOL making it to #1 of the album chart was a surprise as well
