Looks like a lot of deadwood will be falling out next week. :lol: It really does depend on what enters next week. I would've expected to have more than 5 new entries this week but there was nothing else of the release schedule worthy of my chart, and there's no big European hits at the moment either.

However, I've had a few this year purely because I felt some of them ('Wonderful Life', 'No Tears To Cry' and 'Love The Way You Lie' were too good to peak at #2). Usually, my no. 1 singles have 3/4 weeks at no. 1 and obviously any songs I absolutely love can get more weeks. 2. Exactly, there's nothing wrong with a great instrumental dance track. Eric Prydz 'Pjanoo', Robert Miles 'Children' and William Orbit 'Adagio For Strings' are all good examples. 14. Europe is much more accepting of artists who have already been successful in their country. James Blunt, Mel C, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams, Amy Macdonald. Thing with 'First Day Of My Life' was that, iirc, that track was used as the theme tune to a popular German programme. It was a great song regardless and even made no. 7 in my own chart in 2005. The most recent British surprise for me is Hurts. Top 5 album in the UK that's vanished without trace and a top 30 hit. Yet across Europe 'Wonderful Life' has been so much more successful, and rightly so. :D

Europe is much more accepting of artists who have already been successful in their country. James Blunt, Mel C, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams, Amy Macdonald. Thing with 'First Day Of My Life' was that, iirc, that track was used as the theme tune to a popular German programme. It was a great song regardless and even made no. 7 in my own chart in 2005. The most recent British surprise for me is Hurts. Top 5 album in the UK that's vanished without trace and a top 30 hit. Interesting point. By "aging" artists in 30 years time you only need to look at the current crop of UK popstars. The signs aren't looking good compared to America. I definitely think Lady GaGa could be the next Madonna and still scoring hit singles in 20 years from now. Who else though? Leona Lewis, maybe. Alexandra Burke, debatable. Rihanna? That's a possibility. There really aren't many - especially no male artists anyways - who could still be going strong in 20 years. Oh, actually Michael Buble could but that's it. JLS, The Wanted and god forbid One Direction are popular now but in 20 years? No chance!!! :lol: Even the most successful "solo" member will be lucky to be going strong in 20 years. Robbie Williams has lasted 14 years as a solo artist and even his populairity is waining.

I'm glad because it's really helped to continue selling 'Only Girl' for a second week. Last week the song was selling on merit alone - 126k to enter at #2 is excellent. X Factor has provided the welcomed boost. The fact Cheryl is no. 3 in the midweeks behind Alexis Jordan speaks volumes. In the UK, James Blunt is considered a musical joke but I judge songs on the "song" rather than the artist. If an artist manages more no. 1 hits in my chart then they're obviously doing something right imo. :D Hmm, '1973'? I really didn't get the fuss over that song at all. It was massive across Europe and went to no. 1 in several countries but iirc it limped in at no. 37 in my chart. 15 (--) Cheryl Cole - Promise This (15) [1 wk] You don't this song so much, do you? :D Cheryl Cole is not my idea of a great popstar. I actually prefer 'Promise This' to 'Fight For This Love' but 'FFTL' was always be remembered more. She's not got a brilliant singing voice and uses hype to make a name for herself. Fair enough, it works with the British public. Geri Halliwell didn't have the best voice in the world, but she knew how to play the "media" card and was always in the newspapers. Plus, Geri was a judge herself (oh the irony) on Popstars: The Rivals before getting a slot on X Factor this year. To be fair, Cheryl and Geri (in the mid 90s) had masses of sex appealbut they really shouldn't be judging other singers when they themselves aren't great singers. It does, however, produce excellent TV.
