Inside my Wardrobe: Suited ... and booted

Darius with a selection from his wardrobe

5 Jan 2011

Singer Darius Campbell, 30, is rounding off a successful year by starring in his first panto, Snow White, at the King’s Theatre.

The Bearsden-born star, who first found fame on reality show Pop Idol but turned down Simon Cowell’s million-pound record deal, won ITV show Popstar to Opera Star this year, appeared in an opera and played in his own big-band show.

He has not one but three wardrobes – in Glasgow, London and Los Angeles.

He revealed his love of expensive suits, Ratpack-style and M&S undies to SARAH SWAIN...

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE OUTFIT AT THE MOMENT AND WHY?

I’m rocking kilts from 21st Century Kilts (Sauchiehall Street). The owner, Howie Nicholsby, has got some good stuff and I’ve got my eye on a few for the new year – for performing and casual wear.

I’ve got a green wool one which is great right now. That kilt goes with the jacket of this Hugo Boss suit I have. My wardrobe is very much about mixing and matching. My other favourite outfit is my Diesel jeans, a Marks & Spencer v-neck T-shirt, a Hugo Boss 1950s-style jacket and Christian Dior boots.

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Simple, essential, Ratpack. I love the Hugo Boss range of 1950s-inspired skinny suits. I’ve got eight. I wear the jackets with jeans, and when I travel I’ve never got less than two in my suitcase.

WHERE DO YOU SHOP IN GLASGOW?

Frasers – the great thing is the range – and Rox in the Argyll Arcade. My wardrobe is never complete without a great watch.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SHOP IN THE WORLD?

It’s a close call between Rock and Republic in LA or the Hugo Boss flagship store there. They have stuff you can’t to get anywhere else.

WHAT’S THE MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE?

One of the bespoke Huge Boss one-off suits. They are about $10,000. The fabrics are amazing. I only have one. Because I get my suits tailored it makes things pricier – but worth it.

The thing with fashion is it’s got to represent who you are, your style and how you feel. That doesn’t work if it doesn’t fit your body.

And an Omega watch. A limited edition James Bond anniversary one. It’s worth about £10,000 and was a gift – but I can’t say who from...

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST BARGAIN?

Two pairs of army-style boots from Topman. I got a brown and a black pair for £30 each instead of £90.

They go with slim jeans. Their range of jeans and boots is great.

WHOSE STYLE DO YOU ADMIRE?

John Hamm who plays Don Draper in Mad Men. He’s got a great sense of style. I love the retro throwback, when men could be gentlemen and women could be ladies.

That little bit of Hollywood glamour has made a huge comeback on the red carpets in the states.

ANY FASHION DISASTERS?

The ponytail. As a student who couldn’t afford a haircut I should have got a pair of clippers and shaved it off.

I look back and smile at it that period in my life. We’ve all been there. Also, I was about 19 and fell in love with a pair brown corduroy trousers – with flares.

IF YOU HAD TO SAVE ONE ITEM FROM YOUR WARDROBE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

A white cashmere jumper my aunt knitted for me. It’s simple and warm.

WHAT WAS YOUR LAST PURCHASE?

A skinny black Christian Dior tie from their shop in London.

WHAT’S ON YOUR SHOPPING LIST FOR WINTER?

I don’t wear belts any more, I have fallen in love with the range of braces Christian Dior do. They’re an imitation of the ones they wore in the 1920s.

They attach to any pair of trousers under your suit and keep the line really clean and you don’t have to wear a belt. It feels really cool and they look great. It think they’re about £150.

And I really need to go to Marks & Spencer. On my last trip to the States I had a bag stolen and it had a lot of basics in.

My favourite range of v-neck T-shirts and underwear is all Marks & Spencer. They do the best quality.

ARE YOU A HOARDER OR AN OFF-LOADER?

Off-loader. I give stuff to charity and to auctions. Over the years I think I’ve raised about £20,000 doing that.

WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE?

I’m really lucky. I’ve got the wardrobe I’ve always wanted.

SHARE A FASHION SECRET?

Don’t try too hard, and a little of the best is much better.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE GLASGOW STYLE?

Eclectic, bohemian, elegant, and everything in between. A lot of time we go for practicality but if Glasgow had LA’s weather I think the stars would be lining up to live here.

HOW MANY PAIRS OF SHOES DO YOU HAVE AND WHERE ARE THEY FROM?

Six. They’re all designer Christian Dior, D&G, Armani, Hugo Boss – except my Nike trainers and my Topman boots.

WHAT ABOUT MAN BAGS?

I don’t believe in them. A man should be a man.

IS IT DIFFICULT HAVING YOUR CLOTHES SPREAD BETWEEN GLASGOW, LONDON AND LA?

I’ve got one set of everything everywhere so I travel light. At the moment I’m staying at Malmaison, in Glasgow, which is a home from home.

When I do travel my essential thing is my Gibson guitar, which I keep in my wardrobe. It’s amazing and it’s a part of my music and part of my style.

I’m using it to write a new record which will be out this year.

Darius on the run - Darius Campbell will take part in his first 10k raising money for Cancer Research UK after his father fought the disease

He made his name on reality TV but now Darius Campbell is facing a new reality: training hard for this year’s Men’s 10k in Glasgow.

The singer and former Pop Idol star is returning to his home city for the Men’s Health Forum Scotland 10k this summer and says he will be doing it for his father, who is recovering from cancer.

Registrations for the June 19th race open on January 11 and around 5,000 men are expected to take part. Last year, the runners raised £400,000 for charity and organisers hope they will beat that amount this year.

Campbell, who’s just finishing in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at the King’s Theatre in Glasgow, has chosen to run for Cancer Research UK, a decision inspired by his dad Booth’s recent struggle with the disease. Booth will also be taking part, as will Darius’s brother Aria.

Campbell, 30, who will start training with Aria next month, said he had wanted to run a 10k for some time. “I’ve never done a 10k before,” he said. “This will be my first but my brother and I have been keen to do it for a while. We were both talking about new resolutions at Christmas and we both wanted to do more in terms of health and fitness and my dad, who’s recovering from cancer, has also been trying to keep himself fit too so he’ll be walking and light-jogging it. It will be very much in the spirit of doing it for my dad but doing it with him too.”

The singer said the Men’s Health Forum Scotland Men’s 10k would be the first time he had run in any serious competition since school. “I honestly haven’t jogged or run in any kind of competition since cross-country at school so this will be my first and it’s a great first one to do. My brother is the personal trainer of the family so he’s going to be a big help training my dad and I. It was me who drove the idea of doing the race but he will drive the training.”

Another runner who will be taking part on June 19th is 30-year-old Brian McDermott, who will be raising money for Men’s Health Forum Scotland, the charity that has organised the race and aims to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

McDermott, who did the 10k for the first time last year, said there were huge benefits to be had for mental and physical health. “Running focuses you,” he said. “I’m a school teacher and there are a whole lot of demands on my time so it’s good to go out and focus your mind, have a wee think, and have a bit of time on your own. My first 10k, in terms of self-confidence, really brought me forward. Also, in terms of fitness, it’s just fantastic.”

The race organiser Sarah McMillan also emphasised that the event was a level playing field for men of all abilities. “This is a 10k for every man, from seasoned runners to guys who walk the route through Bellahouston and Pollok parks. Men en masse stepping outside their personal comfort zone and making a move towards a healthier future whilst raising thousands of pounds for worthwhile causes.”

Not sure if anyone has seen it yet but the the Mens 10k is launched today! (Check out the photos from the launch!) Not one to let a good race pass me by I'm of course taking part. I can only think of one person to run this race for and that is in memory of our pal Gerard Kelly. Watch this space for more info! x

It might not look right but it looks like an actual photo not a mock up. He must've been wearing one.

I wouldn't be surprised if Darius did choose to run in a kilt........not a traditional 8/9 yard kilt, of course, but one of those modern ones, like the ones he wore onstage.

I liked the Evening Times article.

However, deep inside, I'd really like to see Darius give up the suits for a while and get back to his own uniquely eclectic style.

Yes, in 2004 he said he was changing to suits - and that he had his own jazz band set up and would be doing some of the swing numbers - it took him 6yrs but he's where he wanted to be now. I do like more casual wear with suits for more formal occasions but it's not me wearing them. His would never fit me anyway.

He did start in 2005............ surprised most of us with the Maidenhead gigs.

Then came LA, MT and Meisner. It was a while before he could turn his mind back to music and really get down to planning his show. Even then he couldn't resist the challenge of PSTOS.

He must've been really chuffed when the curtain rose on the first HOTBB show.

Although I'm not that keen on the music, Darius sings the songs of that era very well.

I do love his voice, whatever style, and was pleased he was still writing songs for himself too.

His parents say he'll never stop - singing and writing is so much a part of him

Thank goodness for that! Just hope he shares some of them with us. Sue

Now that would be a real bonus. I'd like to hear more of the ones he thinks aren't good enough - or his management think aren't.
Now that would be a real bonus. I'd like to hear more of the ones he thinks aren't good enough - or his management think aren't.

There will be some he feels like that about, but I got the feeling, speaking to him at Lincoln, that it was more that his musical direction for the album had changed(again  ) and rather than having finished his third album(as I believe he has stated once or twice on tv), he was still looking at writing it. As you've said Meg, when I asked about discarded songs for us to sample, he said the record company(or was it his management :???: ) wouldn't allow it.

We've had an awful lot of D events in 2010, so I really shouldn't grumble, but I do long for some new music and live Darius gigs, with him leaping around the stage and me snapping away. Guess I'll just have to do a Take That and have a little patience
