Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) climbs to #1

Barbadan star Rihanna claims her third #1 single as lead singer this week, as Only Girl (In The World) footsteps of Take A Bow by climbing from a #2 entry to #1. This is due in no small way to her X-Factor performance, the continuing popularity and airplay the track has been receiving, coupled with it having a wider appeal than the singles from Rated R. Rihanna will have a fight on her hands to remain at #1 as she'll need to hold back the flood caused by Take That releasing their new single as a 5 piece!

Alexis Jordan - Happiness enters at #3

US singer songwriter Alexis Jordan gets her debut UK hit as Happiness becomes a bit of a surprise top 3 hit, entering at #3 this week. Alexis was a contestant on the first series of America's Got Talent, also also sung the US National Anthem for the Air Force Academy at the age of 12, as well as opening for Smokey Robinson at a Stevie Wonder tribute concert. This Alexis Jordan is not to be confused with another Barbadan swimmer of the same name.

Saturdays - Higher climbs to #10

This week saw the rather belated full release of The Saturdays new single Higher, including a new version which features rapper Flo Rida. Flo Rida has made #1 twice in the UK, both times in direct competition with the Saturdays - 2009's Right Round beat their cover of Just Can't Get Enough for Comic Relief and earlier this year Club Can't Handle Me beat Missing You at the last minute. This is the girl's 8th UK top 10 hit in total out of 9 releases to date, and was looking like missing the top 20 until the full release this week.

Will i Am feat Nicki Minaj & Cheryl Cole - Check It Out enters at #11

The #11 new entry this week belongs to US rapper, singer songwriter and producer William James Adams jnr, better known as Will i am. He first rose to fame as the Black Eyed Peas frontman, and as a producer has worked with artists such as Cheryl Cole, Daddy Yankee and Usher. Will i am has also produced several tracks to be included on Michael Jackson's forthcoming posthumous album. Check It Out samples Buggles 1979 hit Video Killed The Radio Star and is written and performed alongside pink haired US rapper Nicki Minaj, with added vocals from Cheryl Cole. Check It Out is now the second hit single to feature Will, following on from Usher's #1 hit OMG.

Shakespear's Sister - Stay re-enters at #12

So the X-Factor effect comes into play once more this week, as another of the tracks to be performed makes a significant re-entry. Shakespear's Sister are a duo consisting of Bananarama singer Sionbhan Fahey and guitarist Marcella Detroit, who were active and had several hit from 1989 until their split in 1993. The biggest of these hits was Stay which was #1 for 8 weeks in 1992, making it the longest running #1 by an all female duo / group. Now it returns to the charts at #12 after a notable performance by X-Factor conestant Cher Lloyd.

Neyo - One In A Million enters at #20

Coming in at #20 this week is the second single to be taken from US pop R&B singer Neyo's 4th album Libra Scale, the chance of that being 1 In 1,000,000! This follows on from his chart topping hit Beautiful Monster from earlier this year, which was fairly quick to drop down the chart after entering at the top. One In A Million is now Neyo's 8th top 20 hit in total since his 2006 debut #1 hit So Sick, the biggest seller still remains 2008 massive #1 hit Closer.

Tinchy Stryder feat Taio Cruz - Second Chance enters at #22

UK rapper / grime artist Tinchy Stryder first hit big last year with #3 hit Take Me Back, #1s Number One and Never Leave You, as well as #14 cover of Olive's You're Not Alone. The first of his big hits was alongside Taio Cruz, with whom he teams up again for a Second chance but can only make a relatively low #22. This follows his #10 hit In My System and is taken from his forthcoming album Third Strike, this can be seen as the second chance from his third strike ... what next, fourth shot?!

Nadine Coyle - Insatiable enters at #26

Entering at a rather surprisingly low #26 this week is a Girls Aloud member who is not Cheryl Cole, it is Nadine Coyle with her debut solo single Insatiable. This low position will raise a few eyebrows, this is due to several factors combined. The track was only released on Monday instead of Sunday thus losing a full day's worth of sales and Sunday is usually the biggest sales day of the week for single downloads. Nadine had to concel several live performances and not received much airplay, and is not gereally proved to be a popular song. Her debut album of the same name is due out next week, but exclusive to Tesco.

Roll Deep feat Alesha Dixon - Take Control enters at #26

London based grime collective Roll Deep score their third hit single of the year as Take Control enters at #29, another track to perform less well than perhaps expected this week. Take Control follows on from their 2 chart toppers Good Times and Green Light from earlier this year, and features singer and Stricly judge Alesha Dixon. This follows Alesha's own top 20 hit Drummer Boy and is taken from Roll Deep's new album Winner Stays On due out next week.

Jamiroquai - White Knuckle Ride enters at #39

UK funk band Jamiroquai make their return to the top 40 this week, albeit rather lower down than they have been used to. The band were formed in 1992 with Jay Kay at the helm, taking their name from a blend of Jam session and "iroquai" the name of a North American tribe. When You Gonna Learn was Jamiroquai's first single making #28, since then they have had 18 top 20 hits with their peak being in the late 1990's with radio staples like Virtual Insanity, Cosmic Girl, Alright, Little L and their only #1 Deeper Underground. Lead single from their 7th studio album was to be Blue Skies, but instead they went with the lesser known White Knuckle Ride which they performed on X Factor ... result a #39 entry for the track.

Cheryl Cole tops the albums chart

Cheryl Cole scores her second consecutive #1 solo album as Messy Little Raindrops sells bucketloads to hit #1, ahead of Bon Jovi's second Greatest Hits album which continues their run of 4 successive # 2 albums. UK female singer songwriter Rumer's debut album Seasons Of My Soul enters at #3 after top 20 single Slow and follow up single Aretha. After an ITV show, Rod Stewart enters at #5 with his 5th in the American Songbook series, Neil Diamond enters at #8 with his covers album Dreams just behind Jamiroquai's lowest charting album to date Rock Dust Light Star at #7. Other new entries in this week's crowded album chart include Peter Andre at #10, Neyo at #11, Elaine Paige + Friends and Pet Shop Boys.

Personal Opinion

I am happy to see Rihanna top the charts with Only girl as it is easily my favourite of hers to date, I'm not keen on Alexis Jordan's Happiness really. I think Higher is one of the best the Saturdays have done, better than Missing You anyway ... but why the new Flo Rida version? I don't like Check It Out much and think that Nicki Minaj sounds absolutely terrible, on the other hand I absolutely love the haunting Stay by Shakespear's Sister. Neyo's One In A Million is quite good, as is Nadine's song but nothing speical really. Both Tinchy's and Roll Deep's songs are absolutely dire in my opinion and I'm glad to them both flop. I find White Knuckle Ride really average, especially as I have loved much of Jamiroquai's work in the last.
