November 28, 201014 yr Author from: http://www.atu2.com/band/edge/ The Edge Biography The Edge aka David Howell Evans was born 8th of August in the year 1961 and is a British-born Irish musician and is the guitarist as well as the keyboardist of U2. He is also the main backing vocalist for the very famous and Grammy nominated Irish rock band U2. He stands out due to his very distinct electric guitar timbre as well as for his very percussive style of guitar playing. He also is known for a perfect as well as very innovative usage of his digital processing of the sound and he uses the delay effect. He also has been very monumental in shaping the band’s very unique sound. In the year 2003 the world famous Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Edge as the 24th guitarist on their accumulated list of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”. David Howell Evans was born in the Eastern part of London and had Welsh parents namely Garvin and Gwenda Evans. He received his initial education at the St. Andrew’s National School. The Edge later received lessons for both the piano and guitar and often made a few performances with his brother Dik Evans before they answered an advertisement for seeking musicians and form a band, thus U2 was formed. The band initially started with began performances in several venues in and around Ireland and finally their maiden album; Boy saw the light of the day in the year 1980. In 1981, leading up to the October tour, The Edge came very close to leaving U2 for religious reasons, but he was persuaded to stay. During this period, he became involved with a group called Shalom Tigers, in which band mates Bono and Larry Mullen Jr. were also involved. Shortly after deciding to remain with the band, he wrote a piece of music that was to become “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. The Edge was married to his girlfriend Aislinn O’Sullivan on the 12th of July in the year 1983 and had three daughters. They later divorced and The Edge met Morleigh Steinberg and started dating. They had two kids and married in the year 2002. The Edge is recognized for his chiming and shimmering sound emitted out of the digital delay effects as well as from reverb. He also puts focus on both melodies as well as on texture. He has established his own sound that is popularly called the “Edge” sound. This sound is only found in the albums of U2 and this is what the guitarist wanted to establish for a long while. Apart from his time in his main band U2, The Edge has also done music with other musicians. He has recorded with artists of the likes of B. B. King, Johnny Cash, Tina Turner and Ronnie Wood. The Edge has also connected with the likes of Brian Eno and Lanois associate Michael Brook and has worked with him for the score of the Captive that was released in the year 1986. Edge continues to create music for his band.
