Posted December 9, 201014 yr Because all of that week's sales will have been bought in the run up to Christmas so it would look stupid to have this year's Xmas chart on the 19th based on second last week run up sales.
December 9, 201014 yr The chart that gives the #1 on Christmas Day is the Christmas chart - which is the one the week before. What is the point of this topic?
December 9, 201014 yr The Xmas No1 is based on chart weeks as opposed to sales weeks; the chart announced on the 19th is for the chart w/e 25th December 2010 therefore the Xmas No1. :)
December 9, 201014 yr I can see what Zenon is saying. Although the offical Christmas chart will be w/e 19th, the chart announced on the 26th will include the whole week before and including Christmas Day.
December 9, 201014 yr Yes, I see what he is saying as well, but thems the breaks - Christmas is on the 'wrong' day this year for the chart :P
December 9, 201014 yr The Christmas number one is the answer to the question "What is the current number one single?" asked on Christmas Day. Of course, the number one announced on Boxing Day has a good claim to the title but that's not the way it works.
December 9, 201014 yr Author When the charts were announced on Tuesdays up until 1987, the earliest possible Xmas number one announcement time would have covered sales from the 10th to 16th December!
December 10, 201014 yr The chart that gives the #1 on Christmas Day is the Christmas chart - which is the one the week before. What is the point of this topic? To make Cowell think he picked the wrong week? :P
December 10, 201014 yr The chart that gives the #1 on Christmas Day is the Christmas chart - which is the one the week before. What is the point of this topic? I know. The #1 on christmas day is the Xmas #1, so it's the chart announced the Sunday before. It's always been like this
December 10, 201014 yr Anyways, it just means that the Xmas #1 contenders will benefit from two strong weeks for sales. The X Factor winner will obviously sell well next week regardless of "competition" but is likely to continue selling well the following week as people the cd for Xmas on 22/23/24th December. It just means the post-Xmas chart won't have the usual plummet in sales that most other years tend to have. Then there will be the iTunes gift card effect post-Xmas day so sales will still be relatively strong for the chart w/e 1st January 2011. The X Factor winner could therefore potentially have 3 weeks at no. 1 with strong sales (depending on who wins and how inspiring their choice of song for winners single is).
December 10, 201014 yr ^^yeah, it will mean we basically have two weeks of xmas syle sales.the only missing day will be the saturday which is xmas day itself.then the itunes gift effect the week later!!!
December 11, 201014 yr It's interesting actually, because I think the actual "christmas" songs will get their yearly peak on the Boxing Day chart. I'm actually fairly convinced that Ellie Goulding will be #1 that day, even if it's not STRICTLY a christmas song, but the advert will be seen on every Christmas TV break and the X Factor song won't be getting as much exposure by then.
December 11, 201014 yr I think the X Factor winner is going to stick around for at least 3 weeks at #1, most of the new releases in Week 1 (first week of Jan) will most likely get pushed back.
