When will the Popstars single, No Time For Sleeping by Lavive (sounds like a sanitary towel) be charting? It's probably the best Popstars single since Monrose, I can't believe that show is still popular there...

I'd say the same with regards to their appreciation for Shakira, Hurts, Lena and Stromae this year, but then I took a look at the current #1 :puke:

Really? I think it's crap  Anyway, it was released this week I think, but I'm not expecting big things for it.

Just found it's a cover of a romanian dance song by Corina :o

Yeah, didn't notice that :/ At least Empire Of The Sun is good (but still old...) Still Shakurtstromalena

I can't stand it. Give me the original any day over that version.

But yeah, with that, We Are The People and Run all top ten, it looks a bit prehistoric, even though I LOVE those two songs!

I was really surprised that Empire Of The Sun made #1 in Germany last week. Thought Black Eyed Peas were going to climb to #1 this week but alas IZ has reclaimed the #1 spot.

Out of curiosity, does the German chart allow all download sales or do record companies still have to give permission for the download tracks to chart in the main singles chart?

Like GD has mentioned, it's odd that brand new tracks like 'Who's That Chick?', 'Firework' and 'Hold My Hand' out in the top 20 whilst IZ, EOTS and Leona's 'Run' are top 10.

Still the latter. Also the charts are not based on sales but market share/gross profit, and Media Control also still gives physical singles the same value as digital sales. Hence why the German singles chart & the top 20 download chart positions mostly never match.

For example - this week's German top 20 download chart:

1 2 Black Eyed Peas The Time (The Dirty Bit)

2 1 Empire Of The Sun We Are The People

3 3 Duck Sauce Barbra Streisand

4 4 Bruno Mars Just The Way You Are

5 7 Rihanna Only Girl

6 5 Israel Kamakawiwo'ole Somewhere Over The Rainbow

7 8 Aloe Blacc I Need A Dollar

8 11 Madcon Freaky Like Me

9 10 Leona Lewis Run

10 new Katy Perry Firework

11 14 Thomas D Million Voices (7 Seconds)

12 16 Far East Movement Like A G6

13 6 David Guetta Feat. Rihanna Who's That Chick

14 12 Pink Raise Your Glass

15 9 Revolverheld & Marta Jandova Halt Dich An Mir Fest

16 13 Unheilig Winter

17 20 Usher Feat. Pittbull Dj Got Us Fallin' In Love

18 15 Hurts Wonderful Life

19 17 Take That The Flood

20 new Michael Jackson Feat. Akon Hold My Hand

That seems a bit strange. Surely the German iTunes #1 each week sells more downloads than the physical cd that's sold the most copies in the same period?

Or are sales on German iTunes relatively small? I don't think I'll ever understand the whole "market share/gross profit" thing. I remember reading about this in 2008 when 'Ein Stern' by DJ Otzi was back in the top 10 a year after it first charted in Germany.

Mind boggling.

It's basically sort of the same way the movie box office charts are compiled, showing which movie (in this case, album/single/dvd) grossed the biggest amount of money for that week, but in percentage points. I believe Media Control follows this practice for the Austrian charts as well.

Certifications obviously still reflect sales though, but sales information is still seldom released in a huge country like Germany. I'll never understand why.

It is odd, I agree. I read recently that Hurts - Wonderful Life had sold 300,000 in Germany and gone platinum :w00t:

German chart comments - Issue date - 17.12.2010

So instead of going down and leaving the way clear for new tracks to climb towards the top, Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole makes his revenge this week by returning to the number one for yet another, actually a tenth week. As it seems, Germany is on the path to end 2010 on an old note, unless Black Eyed Peas don't do something to prevent it. The latter's "The Time (Dirty Bit)" rises this week to #2.

Thus, it's a shame that the highest new entry fails to enter the top 10 by a notch. "Firework" is of course the third single taken from Katy Perry "Teenage Dream" album. By entering at #11 it is for now the first single of Perry to miss the top 10 since "Waking Up in Vegas" in 2009. It is a great song though and should go higher in the next weeks.

Video

Next up is the return of legendary Michael Jackson to the charts. "Hold My Hand" is a collaboration with Akon and marks the release of Michael's first posthumous album "Michael". Unfortunately, as this is not a 100% work of MJ, it lacks any of the appeal of his best moments and is quite an unremarkable track. This makes the entry at #18 quite an achievement.

Video

The next new entry comes in at #26, belonging to OneRepublic. "Good Life" is the fourth single taken from the guys' "Waking Up" LP and therefore it's entry in the top 30 is more than a success. Still, as this is one of the most uplifting songs of the winter, I wish it was a little bit higher.

As it is the tradition at this time of the year, the singles charts are flooded by Christmas-themed songs, which most of the time are led by classics such as Wham's "Last Christmas". This week, however, we have two completely new tracks, which are more than welcome to bring some fresh air in terms of festive spirit. The songs in question are Train's "Shake Up Christmas" at #36 and Coldplay's "Christmas Lights" at #37.

And the rest new entries with videos:

#51 Justin Bieber - Pray

Video

#60 Monrose - Breathe You In - It's a shame that the goodbye single of girl group Monrose enters the chart at such a low point. It easily becomes their least successful single and if it wasn't for it, the girls would have had only top 30 singles in their career. Still with #1s "Shame" and "Hot Summer", five more top ten hits and three top 30 ones, Mandy, Senna and Bahar became among the most successful pop acts in Germany in the new century. They were also the second most successful winners of the Popstars casting show, next to No Angels.

#65 Phil Collins - Going Back

#69 The Black Pony - Boys Are Crazy

#76 30 Seconds To Mars feat. Kanye West - Hurricane 2.0

#78 House Rockerz - Herzrasen
