Posted December 15, 201014 yr GB40 Gary Barlow will celebrate his 40th Birthday on January 20th 2011 with a special show at Shepherd's Bush Empire for family, friends and fans. The event, titled GB40, will see Gary perform songs that span a fantastic 20 year career in a small and intimate setting with profits from the show going to charity. The concert will provide an exceptional opportunity for a small number of fans to enter a ticket lottery which, if lucky, will allow them to join Gary in commemorating his special day doing what he loves doing best. Take That have sold over 30 million albums and 7 million tour tickets over the course of their career, with their recent reunion being one of the most talked about events of the last few years. Gary Barlow's contribution to the band, as well as to British Music as a whole has been unquestionable and his reputation as a singer, songwriter, pianist and performer is undeniable. This time Gary takes to the stage on his own for the first time in over eleven years and will perform songs from his successful career as one of the UK's most distinguished singer/songwriters. He will be backed by a band made up of close friends and acquaintances he's met along the way helping make it a night to remember, with profits from the night going to charity. Read on below to see how you can get to see this unique one-off show... 1/ Lottery - you will be given a chance to buy tickets through a lottery. Registration for the lottery starts today (Tuesday 14th December 2010) and winners will be selected overnight on Wednesday 15th December. Winners will be informed from 9am on Thursday 16th December. The successful applicants will have until noon Friday 17/12 to buy their tickets (£45 each - limited to a pair per person) after which they will be released. 2/ Auction - auction sales open at noon on Thursday 16th December and will shut at noon on Monday 20/12. There are tickets on three levels of the venue and the best tickets will be allocated to the highest bidders.

December 16, 201014 yr They didn't give people much time to find out about this. First time I've heard about it  Great that he's doing it for charity but the show itself sounds pretty self-indulgent :puke2: Edited December 16, 201014 yr by Swagger91

First time I've heard about it  Great that he's doing it for charity but the show itself sounds pretty self-indulgent :puke2: I'm afraid that is exactly how I see it. I wonder who's paying for the initial outlay of it? Hello? OK? Bah humbug! Kath
December 16, 201014 yr They should've done it as a Take That show seeing as 2011 is their 20th anniversary, TT20. It'd be easier to swallow.
December 16, 201014 yr Author Ya tt20 sounds good, i suppose i have a different take as i have loved garys solo work and would love to see him on his own, but i agree it didnt give people much notice or a chance to get tickets.

You had to put your name in for a lottery. I did ... just to see what would happen. Although I had no intention of going ... its on a Thursday and I play dominoes on a Thursday! Even if you 'won' in the lottery ... the tickets are £45 each plus 10% booking fee! I'd pay it for Take That but not for Gary on his own. Anyway ... as I was saying ... I only did it to see what would happen. This is the reply: Dear Applicant Unfortunately you have been unsuccessful in the lottery for Gary Barlow’s 40th Birthday but we thank you for registering and taking part. However, there is still the chance to attend by taking part in the auction here http://www.seetickets.com/garybarlow The auction opens at 12pm on Thursday the 16th of December and closes at 12pm on Monday the 20th if December. Good Luck! Gigsandtours And I can't believe that there are people actually going to give way to this self-indulgence! Well they can kiss my arse anyway ... with 'bidding' starting at £100! When I only like one solo song! Kath Edited December 16, 201014 yr by Kathyp
December 16, 201014 yr I love his solo stuff too, and I'd like to see him make another solo album one day, but really it's not worthy of celebration. He was hardly Elton John  There's no way I'd be able to afford to go anyway, I think paying £85 to see TT next summer is enough plus I'm seeing Katy Perry & Alan Carr next year too.
December 16, 201014 yr Author With it been in the UK i havnt a chance of going at all, i would love another solo gary album aswell but i odnt think it will ever happen to be honest, with this upcoming solo gig im dying to know the track list, there was rumours earlier this year that his solo albums were being re released but it didnt come to light so maybe it could happen after this but again i would be doubtful. In particular i love 12 months 11 days albums and i still believe it was criminally ignored and although its not as good as recent take that albums its still alot better than there older albums plus its stronger than his debut open road album. Still on the upside the huge flop of 12 months 11 days made gary who is today and has probably made him more focused which we have clearly seen in songs he has written with take that since 2006.
December 19, 201014 yr Oh dear. Someone seems to think that he is so important that all the nation should celebrate him. Oh dear. Can he make something for the charity with more style and silence. This "i am soooo good" is only for me "i wantto be in the middle point of the uniersum"... Sorry for my harsh opppinion, but i don't like people using "charity" to do themself a lot of publicity and manipulate the people :puke2: Can he go more down on my rating? :teresa: Edited December 19, 201014 yr by IrisAlbastru

I've thought this for well over a year now ... I'm only sorry that now the music of Take That is getting better and better ... on the whole, Gary Barlow puts me off them. This 'party' is just the vainest display of 'fishing for compliments' I've ever seen. He just makes a bit of a joke of himself. Sorry Pete ... I know you said someone's politics shouldn't put you off people ... but it truly isn't just the politics. I don't think Barlow is intelligent enough to 'get' politics anyway ... he just knows which party makes him financially better off ... which for me makes a bit of a mockery of his 'charidee' work. There is a constant 'Aren't I wonderful. When will I get my knighthood' aura that is just impossible to ignore. I can't stand the guy! I also hate the way he claps his hands. I am looking forward to the CBeebies thing though ... I'm hoping he'll make it funny ... but I doubt he'll be a 'Christopher Walkden'. Kath Edited December 19, 201014 yr by Kathyp
December 19, 201014 yr Author Again i dont dis agree or agree with what ye are saying, everyone is entitled to an opinion, for me i couldnt really care about what he is or isnt as at the end of the day we dont know him, yes he could be a complete asshole or he could be a genuine nice guy, either way we as fans or not fans will never know, for me as i have always said its about the music and once the music satisfies me i couldnt give a $h!t about the rest and so far the music is keeping me happy so im happy out.

I'm glad we can agree on something Pete (you know you'll always be one of my fave BJ people.) I'm glad in a way ... that Progress is the first album of Take That's that I have TOTALLY liked for the music rather than the guys. Glad also that I don't have to watch them in concert ... listening to the album is enough. Kath
December 19, 201014 yr Author YA same herre kathy as i have always said i have great respect and time for you and love having you on buzzjack. For me as i said its different as i never gave a $h!t about how they looked and all that nonsense it was purely about the music, although progress isnt my fave take that album i still love it, and i know you dont like the flood but i bloody adore it and i continue to love it more by the day, never forget, rule the world were the only 2 previous singles i have genuinly loved and loved and i have the same feeling about the flood. Songs like shine, up all nighht, patience, relight my fire and a million love songs i love but not on the same level as the above mentioned.

I've never given much thought to the way an artist or band looks ... it has always been the music. But it is nice when there is something else there ... and with Take That ... it was the personalities. When I read Gary's book I was thoroughly entertained and thought ... what a nice (if a tiny bit arrogant) bloke ... and what a great, dry sense of humour. I even felt sorry for him for what he went through. All of that added up to a great 'story' ... and I think it was the 'story' that I've been swayed by ... rather than any looks. Let's face it ... if any of them were just a bloke on the street ... you wouldn't look twice at them (except perhaps Jason ... who does look just like a perfect model.) Gary Barlow's behaviour over the past couple of years though ... has made me realise why such a lot of people thought he was an arsehole the first time around. And ... this latest 'I'm Gary Barlow ... and I'm having a party. You're all invited as long as the price is right' is just the final straw for me. The guy couldn't display more arrogance if he tried. To be honest ... from reading between the lines ... the auction isn't going to great either ... as a lot of people who had a 'sorry you've not been lucky enough to go into the lottery' email are now getting emails telling them that 'some more tickets' have come up. December 19, 201014 yr Author Gary to me was always a business man and he is a good business man we cant deny that it and fair play to him its paid off he has th emoney in the bank and his kids wont have to many financial worries in years to come which is great. However a good business man has to be shrude and some what arrogant and gary does have these traits but robbie has a hell of alot more of them in my opinion. Aside from marks cheating i always thought mark struggled with confidence and never full believed in himself and i would say his drink problem largely came from that ( and i want to clarify i dont condone his cheating habbits in any way) Gary and Robbie partialy didnt get on first time round as they are 2 of a kind in many ways, they craved the fame and money and both had ego's and both thought they were better than each other, the reason they are probably getting on so well now is that they are both reading from the same page. But again all dat stuff i dont pay much attention to, i did hate what robbie did to gary back in the days when garys solo career went belly up and robbie showed a very nasty spiteful side to him and if anything thats the side of robbie i dont like as he really showed how cold mean and callus he can be, gary be have an ego but i dont think he has that nasty streak that robbie has and im glad he doesnt. Howard again going from reports doesnt seem to be the nice shy guy he portrays as he treats wmen like dirt from many of the stories where in interviews you would never pick up on that. Celelbrities are celebrities and they have their ego;s etc the question is how much of that crap is relevant to us, for me it isnt its about the quality i get for the money i spend on the music, dvds etc. I doubt there is a whole lot of very friendly celebrities out there although i do like to believe from all the stories i have read over the years that Kylie is one of the few who remains friendly and what you see is what you get.
December 27, 201014 yr Gary wanted to celebrate his 40th with something a bit different. He discussed it with the rest of TT quite a while back and Mark mentioned it in one of the Progress promo interviews, later Gary asked fans on his website if they thought it was a good idea. They did and so he planned it. It's a charity gig with him and friends he's met and worked with over the years playing music together. The fact that fans are able to be there is great. He could have filled it with friends and family and left the fans out of it. He also said on his website that he intended to do material that dated right back to Take That and Party, so not a gig full of his solo material, although I would hope some will be included. 11 years ago he said he'd never perform again, and several times over the last 5 years he's said he could never perform solo again. The fact that he's managed to regain enough confidence to do a one off show on his own is a cause for celebration, not derision. Many of you have called it self-indulgent? So is it self-indulgence for any artist to perform alone? Why the hell shouldn't he? He's got 20 years experience in a fickle and difficult industry, he's seen the highest highs and the lowest lows it can offer and finds himself at the age of 40 right at the top of his game despite everything. To resent him wanting to celebrate his Birthday doing what he loves, with friends with whom he enjoys making music, his family and many fans who have longed for him to take to the stage solo again, even if it's just for this one time, is mean-spirited and churlish. Booking The Royal Albert Hall would have been a sign perhaps of slight over confidence but he booked The Shepherd's Bush Empire, capacity 2000. He could have filled it several times. For Kath's information the lottery had no re-released tickets. The option to accept them stood for 24 hours after which the tickets were released into the auction. All auction tickets were taken up on the day the bidding closed. The lowest qualifying bid being £140. Many bid hundreds because they valued a place at this gig very highly. The proceeds go to Charity, how is this an act of arrogance and self-indulgence? Would the same criticism be levelled at other bands who do intimate charity gigs? Or at comedians who also do charity gigs on a regular basis? God forbid anyone should plan a Birthday celebration doing what they enjoy best, surrounded by people who will enjoy being a part of it. That's shameful isn't it? Or is shameful more the attitude of people who damn anything and everything for the sake of their own bigoted pomposity? Edited December 27, 201014 yr by JG1
December 27, 201014 yr Thanks JG for all the inside information! And I did see the initial notice on his own site (which I saw as 'fishing for compliments') I still think he's an arrogant sod though and every day I like him less and less. In fact ... I feel like a complete idiot for ever actually liking him at all. Having said that .... I've truly pleased for those fans who've adored him since the nineties. The ones who followed him from hotel to hotel, hung out in the bar for a glimpse, now they're getting to see him do his 'thang'. I wouldn't have minded going to be honest ... as long as he just played Take That stuff ... and steered clear of his solo work. Kath PS ... who turned you into Judge Pickles ... and I think you are wrong about the lottery 're-release' thing. Edited December 27, 201014 yr by Kathyp
December 27, 201014 yr Author I 100% agree with everything JG1 posyed and i couldnt come anywhere near wording it as good myself.
