Pixie Lott

Broken Arrow

I still cant make up my mind about Pixie Lott to be honest, do I like her? Do I think she’s the devils spawn? Or just a bit of an innocent c**t that should be left alone? Time will tell I suppose but in the meantime she’s busy releasing slightly underwhelming but still kind of really good records like this. Her 2nd highest appearance this year by the way, fact fans.

Time Of My Life

Cant say I was expecting gallons of amazingness from this, was a bit of fan of his last era’s material but not huge, and also thought he was a bit of an arse to be honest. Which I still think, but hey, when the middle 8 is as gorgeous as this record’s – I think that can be forgiven really. His next album is also one of my most anticipated for the forthcoming months.

Keri Hilson

I Like

Useless popstar of the decade who really should give up now to save face Keri here, released ‘I Like’ as part of the soundtrack for a German film and that was that. But surprisingly, Ms Hilson has actually probably recorded her best song to date, bar Knock You Down of course. I still think she should just return to songwriting and have done with it but for the time being, well, lets just appreciate her awesomeness and well, it could be worse. She could be Ciara.

Katy Perry

Firework

This is indeed, Katy’s only solo appearance this year for me. Despite the fact that I have never, ever felt like a plastic bag (or a G6 for that matter) this was by far the best song on ‘Teenage Dream’ for me, certainly better than the title track which was hideously overrated in all departments. She will of course never better ‘Hot N Cold’.

Alesha Dixon

Radio

Poor brave Alesha Dixon. It was all going to well, she was adored by the masses and had a very successful solo career going. Why not better this by becoming a judge on the show that well, really, made her? Heck, if Cheryl Cole can be a judge on talent then so can anyone. How horribly this did backfire. Not her best effort to date, and was trying somewhat too hard to be ‘Breathe Slow’ part 2 but I preferred it to ‘Drummer Boy’ myself.

Ignoring the two Glee songs, this is for me the only non-number 1 I had this year. I still insist it be known as The Saturdays weakest single to date.

Melanie Fiona

Monday Morning

This is my favourite Melanie Fiona track by quite some distant really, I really like her on the whole, a really nice soulful voice. However she does of course suffer from quite a lacking in personality. This is just a superb record for me though.

Jason DeRulo

What If

Again, for me, this is the strongest of his singles. There’s the slightly ridiculous plot of the video, the fact that Jason is just a bit too feminine for his own good and really, anyway who insists on signing their name all the time should automatically be counted as a c**t, Jason BIZZARLY does not appear to be a c**t despite this. Very odd.

Superstar

Very cheesy and very naff, but I can’t be too cruel about Alex here since she actually noticed how well she was doing on my chart and hoped she’d climb higher. Tragically this never happened.

A great song, but dear lord did it get boring very, very quickly and also received way too much airplay than what should be humanly allowed.

Very Swedish. Very generic. And Red One produced. Lets be honest, they were either going to be your worst nightmare or your idea of pop heaven.

Smoke & Mirrors

Highest appearance from Paloma this year, as the fifth/sixth and presumably last single from the debut. Usually by the fifth single I’m very bored of the song but this had quite the amazing video to go with it.

Sky Ferreira

One

Sky Ferreira confuses me, was this the debut single that flopped horribly? Or a buzz single that wasn’t suppose to get Radio 1 backing? Or the debut single that flopped but will be passed off as the buzz single to save face? The possibilities are just endless.

Sara Bareilles

King Of Anything

Follow up to the last very successful era and it’s massive hit sinlge ‘Love Song’. I cant really say if Sara was underwhelming, I certainly don’t think the album was anything all that special but I did very much so like this.

HURTS

Wonderful Life

Didn’t take much attention to this at its initial release I have to admit, I thought it was nice but nothing too impressive. Second time round, several months later, and I just adored it completely. Therefore overplayed it too much as inevitability happens with me of course but there you are.

Heard this on some advert or other, liked it, and a quick google search of the lyrics later and found it I had. Still a bit sad it didn’t catch on and become an annoying Radio 2 anthem it should have been.

Not in a world where Forever Is Over exists -_- This song is so underrated, seriously - I still adore it! When even The Sats biggest fan can't put it in their EOY top 40, I begin to wonder if I'm literally alone in loving it

i LOVE missing you, quite underrated couldn't agree more.. it's a grower and sooo much better than Forever is Over.

Hang With Me

(23-13-06-05-05-07-06-10-20-28-40) 11 Weeks

Second single of the Body Talk era for Robyn, and the second highest on this countdown. Like pretty much everything in this countdown it flopped on it's rase at something like #64, but I dont think lesbians really care about the charts so were ok in that departement. We'll get on to 'Dancing On My Own' later on but I properly got the hype for Robyn this era I think, the woman has the continous habit of making gorgeous music. And really, everyone kind loves Robyn dont they?

Now let us all appreciate the very nice video, small guest appearance from I Blame Coco and thankfully no AaronTM.

Smack You

(31-10-06-05-04-10-20-24-31-43) 10 Weeks

Everything is amazing about this. It's slightly too generic to be taken seriously, but those lyrics are just too amazing to comprehand. Sometimes there isnt another word - this bitch is fierce. And not Kesha fierce, properly, I wouldnt hold out much hope for anyone who got into a fight with this one.

'but tonight im gonna smack you, right between the hips, cos you're such a catty bitch'

ICONIC

However, to properly appreciate this. You have to see the video, everything from the poor asian slag being left half dead to the 'and I f***ed yo man' line is just amazing.

Kate Nash

Do Wah Doo

(43-21-04-03-02-03-03-09-17-27-32-42) 12 Weeks

Poor brave Kate Nash. And I say this for 2 reasons. The first being how much of a tragic flop she's turned into, and I cant even defend her by saying that the material was amazing. Because it most certainly wasnt. Except this of course, which was just brilliant and frankly the only thing on that album worth bothering.

Secondly though, because of Nash's ploy in this song. This is the third song in a row where I really love the video for this, it's cheap but oh so fantastic. You really do want to slap that smug cow through the entire thing, and Nash LITERALLY JUMPING on top of the love interest in the middle of the plane going down is amazing.

Poor Eva Simons. Following the catastrophic flop of the anthem of '09 in 'Silly Boy', I cant say I held on much hope for her. She's kind of at least got something to her name now though. And hey, she has awesome hair. ALL IS NOT LOST EVA!

Turn It Up

(11-08-04-08-09-15-20-27-33-45-50) 11 Weeks

Ah Pixie. On the whole, I do hate her guts. She's personality devoid, makes enjoyable but kinda generic and forgettable music, and cant sing for $h!t half the time. But 'Turn It Up' really was kind of awesome, by far her best single it was quite the summer anthem for me and temporarily I stopped disliking her intently.

I'm sure she's a nice girl really. Leave me alone in my hatred ok?

Anyway, this is her highest appearance to date so I think we should have a Pixie rankage;

01 Turn It Up

02 Cry Me Out

03 Boys & Girls

04 Broken Arrow

05 Mama Do

06 Gravity

Daft cow, should have released 'Here We Go Again'

Lemar

The Way Love Goes

(43-10-05-05-06-10-11-15-11-14-20-25-33-45) 14 Weeks

Poor forgotten Lemar, following his rather dull and floptastic last era there wasn’t much hope being held on him even coming up to the levels of great music he made in previous years. ‘The Way Love Goes’ proved this all entirely wrong however. Firstly, he bizarrely managed a top 10 hit for the first two in what? 4 years? And also made one of his best songs to date. Hoorah for Lemar.

I’ve now returned to properly stanning now. Well as much stanning as a rubbishgai like me can do for a male artist I suppose.

Glee Cast

Don’t Stop Believing

(37-22-16-10-12-21-40-07-10-12-14-19-23-29-35-42-x-46) 17 Weeks

Despite the fact that ‘Like A Prayer’ and ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ went to #1 for me, this is the only Glee song I’ve decided to include this year. Namely because I needed the space for more deserving artists (Coco was ecstatic when I told her of her inclusion) and also this is the only one who had a decent chart run.

On a technical note, this isn’t my favourite Glee performance but on the otherhand they’re unlikely to ever top it in terms of sheer amazingness and chart success. This is not helped by how mediocre series 2 has been so far.

Of all the versions I’ve heard of this aswell, it’s by far my favourite. Alongside Mercedes’s ‘aint no Kelly Rowland line’ it’s the defining moment of the first 2 episodes which rather runs this from a HSM only with a gay to an amazing TV show.

Satellie

(22-02-04-12-22-34-48) 07 Weeks

This years token Eurovision entry in the countdown. 2008 was No Angels, 2009 was Jade Ewen and 2010, for once, I actually agree with the right song winning. And actually, the other two only featured in the low 90’s or such, so this is by far my favourite Eurovision entry since I really started taking an interest.

Her amazing pronunciation of words, the lyrics about underwear, the fact that she’s possibly the most adorable thing in this countdown bar Mollie King and just it’s cheesy perfection really.

Viktorious

When We Were 10

(17-03-03-07-09-17-22-34-39-48) 10 Weeks

Something odd happened to me midway through October, and I suddenly transformed from generic BuzzJack music taste to suddenly charting songs that didn’t appear in other peoples charts aswell. Hence, the appearance of the mostly unknown artists such as Viktorious here. Or Japayorks slightly moody cousin as I enjoy calling him.

Anyway, this really is a brilliant record.

Scissor Sisters

Fire With Fire

(37-19-13-07-10-14-20-27-32-44) 10 Weeks

The Scissor Sisters return this year, whilst not quite living up to previous success and not quite giving us the amazing classic of a lead single like the previous single, we were still given an amazing album, which is something most seem agreed upon. Lead single ‘Fire With Fire’ however does not quite have such all over appreciation, personally I regard it as my favourite from the album and by quite a distance but I’ve seen a lot of people regarding it as their least favourite aswell.

For me, I loved it instantly, it generally still sounds equally anthemic months later and is for me, still one of the their best to date.

(18-02-02-04-10-16-26-30-40) 09 Weeks

'Sincerely Fearful' tells the story of a bat $h!t crazy woman named Emma who voices in her head. Represented by ninjas who are actually herself in diguise, she beats them and up ans is just basically a bit mental.

This is made even more amazing by the lyric of 'i'll get lypo syction, botox, breast reduction'. Basically, this woman is kind of insane, but I've been ordered by contract to say she's amazing or otherwise she'll f*** me up.

Janelle Monae feat Big Boi

Tightrope

(28-12-05-03-04-10-16-21-28-36-46) 11 Weeks

First of two appearances from one of my favourite artists of 2009. Me and Janelle kind of just clicked overnight really, away on holiday with very limited internet access, this was the most recent I downloaded at the time, so I was all over it like a rash.

I mean, everything about Monae is kind of amazing. The hair. The clothes. The album. 'Tightrope' in particular though, is ambitious and compelling to all degrees. It sounds like nothing else and this is ony helped yet again, but the brilliant videot co go with it.

And yeap, I do love this girl just a little bit too much perhaps.

Alexis Jordan

Happiness

(29-08-05-04-09-10-16-29-42) 09 Weeks

Alexis Jordan makes quite charming songs I think. Which is what really differences her from the hundreds of other, equally uninteresting personality wise female artists. Second single 'Good Girl' doesnt quite live up to the standard of this either I dont think.

The idea of her being a complete opposite of Lady GaGa isnt their unbealivable either. Ordinary pretty girl, with no real big gimmicks or wacky outfits to go with. And very, very simple songs and lyrics aswell. It just worked so brilliantly. If the material continues to be this good aswell, then I think theres heaps of potential aswell for Alexis.
