Posted December 17, 201014 yr Does anyone know how BPI certificate albums as Platinum etc? I just don't get how it works! Progress by Take That has sold 1107037 and has just been certificated 5x Platinum  and Gaga's The Fame Monster has sold 2386200 and is still 4x Platinum! How is this possible?
December 17, 201014 yr It is based on how many copies have been SHIPPED not sold, ie. Progress has shipped 1.5 million+. Also record labels have to apply/pay for a certification, hence Gaga being only 4x Platinum despite almost selling enough to be 8x Platinum. Edited December 17, 201014 yr by Johnkm
December 17, 201014 yr Author I thought it was based on how many albums have been sold not shipped! Thanks :) Someone tells to GaGa's label to apply for that certification!
December 17, 201014 yr In actual fact the BPI does not charge its members for applying for certifications - it's one of the perks of having paid their membership fees. Obviously it does cost a bit to purchase presentation discs, and they may be obliged to purchase these for each certification. Sometimes they present discs anyway without having applied for official certification - go figure! As for The Fame Monster, I would suggest a catch-up is quite likely in the new year.
