March 30, 201312 yr It's not Benedict Cumberbatch in the Hobbit, Mikey, it is Martin Freeman. Benedict is in the new Star Trek film.
March 30, 201312 yr I'm sure Series 3 of Sherlock is being filmed now and a Series 4 has been confirmed! Just searched, and episodes one and two did begin filming on 18 March, and the final episode will be filmed in the Summer - so we're possibly looking at an Autumn/Christmas broadcast for Series 3.
March 30, 201312 yr It's not Benedict Cumberbatch in the Hobbit, Mikey, it is Martin Freeman. Benedict is in the new Star Trek film. Both actors are in the Hobbit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hobbit:_A...xpected_Journey See the cast list on the left ;) Benedict Cumberbatch as The Necromancer of Dol Guldur: A mysterious sorcerer with the ability to summon the spirits of the dead. Cumberbatch provided performance-capture for the character's brief appearance in this film, and will also voice him in the subsequent installments.
March 30, 201312 yr Oh yeah that WAS Mr Cumberbatch in the Hobbit - it doesn't seem to be a big role as of yet although I don't know what they plan to use him for for the remaining two films (it not being in the book) although it's got to be a rather big role given his new stature. -x- Anyway, back on topic with the episode, I really enjoyed it looking all high-tech etc, great way to reintroduce Clara (who is definitely the prettiest companion of nuWho already). Ceila Imrie was wonderful in what we got of her but it was a little bit of a pedestrian plot (a little bit like a modern 'Idiot's Lantern' with a better villain). I don't mind, it served its purpose as a way to bring the series back. Not really looking forward to next week, seems like too much spacey stuff although I will reserve judgement. I haven't checked the upcoming plots but I'm hoping we get at least one historical, those are always the better DW episodes for me.

A lot of people have compared the episode to The Idiot's Lantern, but I don't see the connection myself. If I remember correctly, Cold War (although I doubt the fact it's set back in time will be the focus, Mark Gatiss will just be fan-boying over the fact the Ice Warriors are in the episode), Hide and The Crimson Horror are all historical episodes.

People are sucked into some form of technology and the ultimate villain feeds off the energy? Same basic villain motivation. It is however, far far better than that. Well I did guess Cold War... but reached the same conclusion as you. Could be good. I am looking forward to Hide from what I've heard, don't know anything about the latter yet. Historicals work best when there is a major historical character or event that they're centered around (e.g. Fires Of Pompeii, Vincent And The Doctor, The Unquiet Dead, all my favourite episodes of their respective seasons) - as opposed to the use of say the Romans in The Pandorica Opens, I still enjoyed that particular episode on different merits, but being a history fan I wish they'd done so much more with the time setting there. So I'm hoping for some of those former ones. But we'll see, Moffat doesn't tend to write those into his grand plot as much as RTD did (ignoring guest writers although they probably wrote most of these, can't remember off the top of my head).
March 31, 201312 yr Fantastic episode tonight, and it was set in a real-life today situation which always seem to be my favourite episodes, 'Partners In Crime' immediately springs to mind! :D

Ah, I get what you mean now. I, too, am looking very forward to Hide - both of Neil Cross' episodes look very promising. But Hide, given it stars Jessica Raine and Dougray Scott should be very good! :w00t: Gotta agree with you there about historical character episodes. Vincent and the Doctor was a masterpiece, but I suppose nearly everything Richard Curtis writes are wonderful pieces of drama (his most recent; the Comic Relief special, Mary and Martha springs to mind ).
March 31, 201312 yr Author I loved the episode! It was a great (re-)introduction to Clara, and I liked the return of the Great Intelligence. I think Celia Imrie was used enough, but the Doctor's conclusion of turning up one guy's obedience as the solution was rather weak. Next week's episode doesn't look the best, but I'm still excited to see Clara's plot development. I agree with Eyes that the historical episodes are generally my favourites though.

I agree with you there, and even then - shouldn't it have been his IQ that was turned up, having previously claimed that it was impossible to reverse the downloads?
March 31, 201312 yr Author I agree with you there, and even then - shouldn't it have been his IQ that was turned up, having previously claimed that it was impossible to reverse the downloads? They said it was only possible to reverse if all of them were reversed, which is why obedience was turned up :P
March 31, 201312 yr They said it was only possible to reverse if all of them were reversed, which is why obedience was turned up :P But only Ms Kizlet was demanding that she be 'un-downloaded', the rest were just begging for help. Confused...
March 31, 201312 yr Slightly OT: I had no idea Vincent and the Doctor was so well loved, I really didn't like it very much at all. My favourite Matt Smith episodes have been: The Doctor's Wife (probably my favourite new Who episode overall in fact), The God Complex, The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone and The Angels Take Manhattan.

Confused... That's why his obedience was turned up, she was his boss and with high levels of obedience he would obey her orders to download her in the only way possible, by downloading the entire cloud thereby The Doctor wins.

The Girl Who Waited SNUBBED. That's probably my favourite NuWho episode, closely followed by The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon. That's why his obedience was turned up, she was his boss and with high levels of obedience he would obey her orders to download her in the only way possible, by downloading the entire cloud thereby The Doctor wins. Ah, I understand now. :D

My favourite Matt episodes are The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone, A Good Man Goes to War, The Wedding of River Song, Asylum of the Daleks and The Angels Take Manhattan. There's not been a single episode of New-Who better than Blink though. That's why his obedience was turned up, she was his boss and with high levels of obedience he would obey her orders to download her in the only way possible, by downloading the entire cloud thereby The Doctor wins. Correct - I clearly can't explain very well :P

My favourite Matt Smith episodes have been: The Doctor's Wife (probably my favourite new Who episode overall in fact), The God Complex, The Time Of Angels/Flesh And Stone and The Angels Take Manhattan. It's definitely my favourite Matt Smith episode overall and probably my second-favourite episode from the whole of nuWho (after the Human Nature 2-parter and before Blink). I'm about the opposite of an art historian but the pacing of the episode building up to Vincent's trip to the future makes me well up so so much - it's really very human at its heart. My other great Smith ones have been A Town Called Mercy, Amy's Choice, The Curse Of The Black Spot and A Good Man Goes To War although I'm probably alone in a couple of those at least. Quite conversely I never thought any of those were great standouts at all! The Angels have been good but not as good as they were Blink and abstract creepy villains in some non-descript place have never done it for me with the former two. (although I loved the TARDIS portrayal in TDW)
March 31, 201312 yr The Weeping Angels were good in Blink and The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone (the latter because they hadn't been seen for a long time; and it was a creepy forest, and they had found new ways to antagonise the Doctor), but they were rather tiresome in The Angels Take Manhattan, and I think Moffat was focusing more on the story of Amy and Rory leaving, rather than balancing out the fear factor that the Angels once had to make the episode as good as it equally could have been. That said, though - The Angels Take Manhattan was still second to best from Series 7, ranking just under The Power of Three, for me. Ranking Series 7 so far, though: 1. The Snowmen 2. The Power of Three 3. The Angels Take Manhattan 4. The Bells of Saint John 5. A Town Called Mercy 6. Asylum of the Daleks 7. Dinosaurs on a Spaceship Edited March 31, 201312 yr by Calum Sandé
March 31, 201312 yr 01 The Angels Take Manhattan 02 Dinosaurs On A Spaceship 03 The Bells Of Saint John 04 The Snowmen 05 Asylum Of The Daleks 06 The Power Of Three 07 A Town Called Mercy I really like them all except Mercy which is just atrocious.
March 31, 201312 yr Dinosaurs on a Spaceship was my least favourite by a mile! :o Cool production and cast and all, but way too 'Kids Fantasy epic' for me. I've actually liked all the other episodes though, S7 has probably been my favourite Matt Smith-era yet. 01 The Angels Take Manhattan 02 The Snowmen 03 Asylum Of The Daleks 04 The Power Of Three 05 A Town Called Mercy 06 The Bells Of Saint John 07 Dinosaurs On A Spaceship As for the Angels, they are imo the best new villains since the revival and were the topic of my essay. I agree that none have been quite as scary as Blink and the Statue of Liberty as an Angel in Manhattan was a good idea in theory, but had ALL SORTS OF HOLES in it in execution, but they are still terrifying.
