I'm going to go out on a limb and say 'California Gurls' won't be as well remembered as people think/would like to think...

I think 'Love The Way You Lie' is a given. That's the only one I'm sure of... 'Pass Out', I dunno. It'll be remembered, but only as soon as people look back at "past number 1's" etc... and remind themselves of it. I don't think it'll come to theirheads straight away... 'Written In The Stars', however, may actually fair better. As for non number 1's... Most of this years number 2's will be remembered more than the songs that prevented them from getting number 1.

I don't really see why Love the Way You Lie is a given, and for those comparing it to STAN, my goodness!

Why do people keep saying Bad Romance? It's a 2009 song. It was released in November 2009, got to #1 in December 2009. Yes, I know it returned there in January this year but on no planet that consists of people with functioning brains is it a 2010 song!

And I don't think She Said will really be remembered. I imagine it being one of those big airplay hits at the time that sort of moves into almost forgotten territory (ala Eagle-Eye Cherry)

Its difficult to say at this point really, I usually wait until halfway through the year before I can truly judge a song as a classic, I'll take some wild guesses:

Rihanna- Only Girl (In The World)

Katy Perry- California Gurls

Bruno Mars- Just The Way You Are

Take That- The Flood

B.o.B/Bruno Mars- Nothing On You

Tinie Tempah- Written In The Stars

Taio Cruz- Dynamite

Owl City- Fireflies

Eliza Doolittle- Pack Up

Cee-Lo Green- f*** You

Yolanda Be Cool- We No Speak Americano

Tinie Tempah- Pass Out

B.o.B/Hayley Williams- Airplanes

Alicia Keys- Empire State of Mind Part II (along with the first version)

Eminem feat. Rihanna- Love The Way You Lie

Lady Gaga/Beyonce- Telephone

Katy Perry- Firework

Plan B- She Said

 I think the word "classic" just completely lost its value here.

For the majority of the songs; I agree -_-

why? firstly, these are just guesses- I could be proved wrong in a years time, secondly, I think these songs have just stood out in their genre and have been met with success and critical acclaim - which songs specifically do you feel I'm being too generous with?

Honestly? All of them. But then I have a very strict definition of a "classic". A few on your list will probably be remembered, though...

I just don't think there's been a classic song from this year, at least in terms of chart music. Music has never been made and consumed as shallow as it is at the moment really... filling songs with hooks all over the place (even if lyrically/musically it's a load of garbage) might be good to get you a quick hit but you need more than that to be a true classic, which is really why a lot of songs from 2010 will be totally forgotten IMHO.

I see- well my definition of a classic is something that is still played now, still held in high regard or still being bought now after a minimum of 5 years- so a thread like this would be more accurate in say, 2015 to see which songs have stood the test of time well enough

my list was only suggestions, but its songs which defined their genre and reached a wide audience, songs like Owl City for example was very different from what was in the charts at the time, and was met with success and acclaim, and imo was one of the standouts of the year-songs that did this, i.e (stood out from the crowd) have potential to become pop classics imo (or at least remembered in a year)

although I agree theres been a lot of songs that will fade into obscurity - for example, OMG may have sold well, but the song was so generic and dull, that they'll be dozens of songs like it that will overshadow that, so I can't see that remembered well- also acts like JLS and The Wanted may appeal to their fanbase, but imo they have yet to reach a wide audience and write a genre-defining song, a small factor is also chart run- the non number 1s from this year will get nowhere

westlife - safe

I don't think most people even remember the vast majority of their number ones, so kindly get a grip.

From this year, I'd wager:

Pass Out

Love The Way You Lie

California Gurls

Miami 2 Ibiza

We No Speak Americano

Only Girl

Just The Way You Are

Fireflies

OMG

The Flood

Airplanes

Forget You

Will be fairly well remembered a few years down the line.

I don't really see why Love the Way You Lie is a given, and for those comparing it to STAN, my goodness!

We're talking about which songs will be remembered, not which songs are the best.

A poll was done here a while ago, Love the Way You Lie vs. Stan. Stan won by a massive margin anyway, so even Buzzjack users prefer the decade old Stan to Love the Way You Lie. Surely isn't it reasonable to compare them here anyway, since they're Eminem's two most successful songs?

But just because Stan is better, it doesn't mean Love the Way You Lie won't be remembered as well.

It's usually not the best songs that are remembered. Look at what's remembered from 2009. I Gotta Feeling, Poker Face and Fight For This Love. Best of 2009? Definitely not!

If we were talking about good songs, I would NOT be listing the likes of Forget You and Telephone, but we're talking about songs that might be remembered in the future, and it's those sort of inoffensive songs which Heart FM, etc. will be playing in years to come. That's the thing, it's largely up to radio DJs which 2010 songs the public will remember. :(

I think the only song that people will remember from this year is most probably Alecia Keys - Empire State Of Mind II

Oh go away.

Fireflies

Pass Out

Telephone (mostly for the video)

OMG

California Gurls

Airplanes

We No Speak Americano

Love The Way You Lie

f*** You!

Just The Way You Are

Only Girl (In The World)

That's about it in terms of obvious ones, some will be remembered better than others of course.

I don't really like to use the "still played now" argument when deciding what songs are classics. As Eric (damn, I need to stop mentioning him, but he says way too many things I agree with ) rightly pointed out, it puts way too much faith in radio DJs, and usually it's not exactly the most ground-breaking or interesting stuff (in fact, usually the complete opposite!) that gets played on radio anyway. Still, it varies from person to person but for me that's definitely not a factor - though in terms of what gets remembered it's definitely a big one.

For me, a classic is simply a song that kind of embodied its whole genre, or at least was a big moment for it, or captured a particular change in it. So personally I'm struggling to see any songs like that in 2010, though it will probably be very obvious if any have come from this year in a few years as you said, when we see exactly what the music of 2013 or whatever sounds like. But right now as I said Pass Out would probably be the only one that would even come close to fitting the bill for me - as it was I would say a big moment in terms of British urban music (even though Dizzee already built the platform before) and was certainly the monster hit from all the grime artists that went mainstream this year. But even that I wouldn't necessarily say is a "classic"... in terms of pop music I don't really think there's been any at all in 2010 that spring to my mind.

Owl City definitely stood out in terms of #1 hits this year... but it didn't really lead to anything which is why I would hestitate to call it a classic (if anything it was just a continuation of sorts of stuff from 2008/2009 anyway). And boybands are never usually concerned with making any songs that get remembered anyway, so don't hold your breath for anything from JLS or The Wanted

In all honesty, I don't think 2010 has produced a genuine classic in the vein of I Gotta Feeling, Chasing Cars or Umbrella. I think We No Speak Americano and Only Girl will be club classics, and Alicia Keys' version of Empire State of Mind will be played on radio for years, but I don't think any of them will be considered bonafide classics.

The main ones that are going to be remembered are:

Cee-Lo Green - Forget You

Rihanna - Only Girl

Katy Perry - Firework

Lady Gaga - Telephone (only for the video though)

Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are

Katy Perry - California Gurls

Eminem & Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie

Tbh I can see Cee-Lo and Eminem being the major two as I can see Forget You being in loads of adverts and LTWYL just being remembered for being massive. I think that possibly one of the biggest songs people will forget is Fireflies as I haven't heard it since it was big really and is just the type of song that would be easily forgotten.

F*ck You could go the same way as Crazy - iconic and well remembered but you barely hear it anymore, or at least I don't.

The one that screams out as THE song from 2010 which will be remembered 10 years down the line is Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are. Others will be remembered of course but this will be the song that transcends from the charts over to something that people will want played at their weddings etc...

It's not a year that's thrown up many potential classics whatsoever, and I'm really disappointed with the efforts of British music in 2010, it's all been incredibly throwaway and 'of the time' this year :(

I'd say:

Edward Maya - Stereo Love

Brandon Flowers - Crossfire (this will be played on Absolute, XFM for years to come)

Owl City - Fireflies

Katy Perry - California Girls

Plan B - She Said

Alicia Keys - Empire State Of Mind

Yolando BeCool - We Speak No Americano

Lady GaGa - Telephone

Take That - The Flood

CeeLo Green - Forget You

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are

Songs I'm unsure about:

Pass Out (Can't see this is going to be played on the likes of Radio 2 and Real Radio in 10 years time which is why I think it'll be forgotten about)

Just my thoughts anyway

Inna - Hot (Possibly due to Club classics shows)

Edited by GAV

A lot of people saying 'Fireflies'. It's almost forgotten now, let alone a future classic. Same with OMG, they're two f the top 5(?) sellers of the year but I don't think either will be remotely remembered as a classic.

Looking back 5 years, the 10 biggest sellers that weren't novelty, X Factor or charity were:

YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL - JAMES BLUNT

DON'T CHA - PUSSYCAT DOLLS FT BUSTA RHYMES

LONELY - AKON

HUNG UP - MADONNA

YOU RAISE ME UP - WESTLIFE

PUSH THE BUTTON - SUGABABES

BAD DAY - DANIEL POWTER

GHETTO GOSPEL - 2PAC FT ELTON JOHN

FEEL GOOD INC - GORILLAZ

SWITCH - WILL SMITH

2Pac? Westlife? WILL SMITH?! Even 'Bad Day' was played nearly as much on UK radio in December as 'Fireflies' was! I think the only two there you could say may even begin to verge on classic are 'Feel Good Inc' and, unfortunately, 'You're Beautiful', with 'Don't Cha' and maybe 'Push the Button' to a lesser extent.
