I disagree with Kylie been a flop, I think its been quite a good era for her. Especially with the critical and fan response she got.)

Fan response is always the same, some hating, some loving it. I don't see how it can called be a "good" era for her when all the promo she did was for nothing, she proved that an X-Factor slot is not invincible, not something to be proud of.

The album under performed but it was a good era for her becuase it was a great album. It doesnt always have to be about sales even though they are important.

And the promo was hardly for nothing considering the album has been ion the chart for neary 7 months

I disagree. It is about sales from a financial side of it. It depends on Kylie's budget. Have her sales succeeded the budget that her label set for her when putting together the album? If money from the budget haven't been reached, then her label have lost money.

From a financial point of view for the label then maybe not.

But the fans may think its a great era because of the music. So for the label maybe it was a flop/underperformer but I think for most fans musically it wasnt

There are fans of any artist who worship the latest stuff like it was the best thing ever, it's hardly an indicator, lot of Christina fans were happy about Bionic as well. 'Underperforming' has nothing to do with fan response because that doesn't pay the bills, the general public does. And yes Aphrodite spent 6 months on the chart but most of the time its sales were very low, just 5k/week and not even the subsequent singles could give it a bigger rise for a long time.

Im not saying it hasnt underperformed becuase it has. But from a fans point of view it wasnt all bad becuase its generally been a great era musically.

The label will definitely make money from this era, the tour has sold out along with the merchandise and record sales they will have a profit. BTT hardly got a big budget video did it? So money saved there...

They dont make money from the tour though. I cant see them making a huge profit on this era but cant see a massive loss either

If they don't make money from tours then what do they make it on, given that touring and merchandise is the most profitable part of the industry?! Certainly a hell of a lot moreso than album and single sales.

Well sales are obv profit. We have no idea how much has been put into it so we have no idead how much profit/loss there has been. There certainly wasnt much money put into the project after the album release and first single/video

Sales aren't profit given how much money goes into recording the album, pressing it, distributing it, the sellers share and the fact that albums get cheaper with every year. The highest grossing tour of 2010 was Bon Jovi's; 80 shows and over $200m. The highest selling album of the year wouldn't have came close to clearing half of that.

Even Rihanna's 50 date tour mmade almost $30m.

well, that´s one of the problems of the music companies, is not worth to invest a lot in the artists. That´s why the jewell cage of the cd looks cheap now than they used to ten years ago...for example.I think the high budget artists are going to die, because the companies do it for the money, and is getting more difficult to sale music

He means the record company won't make any money from the tour as they won't have any financial interest in it (unless they've done some deal with Kylie's management)

Remember those are gross figures though, we have no idea what the net profit is from any tour really as only gross is quoted

I know, but it's still more profitable than record sales are. Unless record sales are truly phenomenal, they won't make that much. They get cheaper each year, sell much less now than they did 5 years ago, and there are lots of stakeholders each taking some of the revenue from an album, which doesn't cost much. I know that is the same with touring in terms of the amount of people who take money out of it, but in comparison, ticket sales get more expensive each year, are at least 3x as much as an album, are not in decline, and can gross far, far higher revenues than anything else can, especially for older acts such as Kylie, who can get away with charging premium prices.

Oh sure, it's why albums are more likely released as an 'excuse' to tour now rather than a tour being undertaken to garner more sales of it's accompanying album. Madonna almost certainly has touring in mind when she records albums now - it's a necessary evil as I would guess she'd rather not bother. Touring is clearly THE main source of income for many acts now without a doubt
