January 21, 201114 yr Author Check out the new Euro Top 20 weekly quiz on MTV Europe's website!Tough questions by the way.....................
January 22, 201114 yr I'm happy that "Hold My Hand" at number 3. Since 1991, every song of Michael Jackson that has been in MTV European Top 20 has reached the Top 4! "Only Girl In The World" spends a 9th consecutive week at number 1! This is Rihanna's longest stayer at the top. The previous record was held by "Love The Way You Lie" with a total of 7 weeks at number 1 (the last 6 of them - consecutive)... Oh, but "Only Girl In The World" actually replaced "Love The Way You Lie" at the top! So yes, Rihanna has now spent the last 15 weeks at number 1 in European Top 20!!! It's interesting to see a surprising re-entry - like "Waka Waka" this week. And I'm also glad Israel Kamakawiwo'ole made it to the chart - I didn't think he would because I thought "Over The Rainbow" didn't have a music video but it turns out that it does!
January 22, 201114 yr Yes, there is a video to 'Over The Rainbow'. I included a video link the week the track entered the Hitstastic European Top 30. ;)
January 22, 201114 yr This MTV top-20 is exactly the same as the top-20 of the EURO 200 from January 9th?????????? <_< Edited January 22, 201114 yr by Chartboost
January 23, 201114 yr Hmm... They are certainly identical... I sincerely hope that EURO 200 won't be the basis for MTV European Top 20 from now on... I looked at the editions of EURO 200 since the beginning of 2010 and there are a couple of things I'm not happy with: During most of the weeks, there are only one or two new entries to the Top 20 of EURO 200 (I count as new entries songs that have climbed from outside the Top 20). There are few editions with four new entries and just one edition with five new entries! I don't want to have just one or two new entries in European Top 20 almost every week! I also have another problem with that EURO 200. It's not actually a chart for Europe but only for the European Union. I don't think excluding the charts from Norway and Switzerland is a good idea. On the other hand, I really don't think some of the charts used for Eastern European countries are real... However, it must be said that there is something that makes EURO 200 better than the Eurochart - it looks like the UK, France and Germany singles charts don't have too big an influence on the chart. I didn't notice songs in the Top 10 that were only successful in one of these countries - like is often the case in the Eurochart... But then we come to the worst thing about EURO 200 - there are simply too few number ones! It's just too boring when there are only 6 or 7 number ones in a year! There shouldn't be such a slow exchange at the top in European Top 20...
January 23, 201114 yr But then we come to the worst thing about EURO 200 - there are simply too few number ones! It's just too boring when there are only 6 or 7 number ones in a year! There shouldn't be such a slow exchange at the top in European Top 20... I can understand where you're coming from but if a track is so popular across Europe over a long period of time, then it should be reflected - even if it does start to get slightly tedious. For eg; this has happened in the Hitstastic European Top 30 where since 2001 there have been a couple of years when there has been less than 10 new no. 1 singles. For eg; Nelly Furtado 'All Good Things (Come To An End)' spent the first 11 weeks of 2007 at no. 1 followed by just 7 more new #1 hits. 'Apologize' had its run at the top split 7 weeks in 2007, the remaining 5 weeks from January 2008. HITSTASTIC EUROPEAN NUMBER ONES - 2007 --- Date Artist Record Wks 67 24-Mar-07 to 27-Apr-07 MIKA Grace Kelly 5 68 28-Apr-07 to 11-May-07 NELLY FURTADO Say It Right 2 69 12-May-07 to 15-Jun-07 BEYONCE & SHAKIRA Beautiful Liar 5 70 16-Jun-07 to 31-Aug-07 RIHANNA featuring JAY Z Umbrella 11 71 01-Sep-07 to 12-Oct-07 TIMBALAND featuring KERI HILSON & D.O.E. January 23, 201114 yr Agreed on all points bobiloko, I'd hate it if the MTV chart would become slow with few new entries and the #1 being long stayers. The exciting thing about the MTV Euro chart is when its fast moving, with many number ones.

There shouldn't be such a slow exchange at the top in European Top 20... The problem is not the EURO 200, but the difference in release dates of the major tracks in the top-20. For example the track from "IZ" is a hit for some months in central Europe and now it's climbing in the western European charts. That means a longer stay in the top-20 I guess. You have to blame the record companies so to say. American hits don't have that problem. They have in general the same release date in the whole EU. That makes them go faster through the EURO 200.
January 24, 201114 yr It's the same with the Euro Hot100, Stereo Love wasn't #1 because it was released in different countries over several months
January 24, 201114 yr Don't get me wrong, I do think a song should stay for a long time at the top if it's really a massive hit all around Europe and nothing can overthrow it - like "Whenever, Wherever" by Shakira. But what I saw in EURO 200 was ridiculous - for the first 35 weeks of 2010, there were only THREE number ones - "Bad Romance", "Telephone" and "Alejandro"!?!? I think that ideally there should be somewhere between 12 and 18 number ones in a year. With one or two having long runs at the top (7+ weeks) and then about an equal number of medium runs (3-6 weeks) and short runs (1-2 weeks). After all, there are times when there is much competition for the top and no song can win for a long time! However, it's also not only about the number of weeks at number 1 but also about not knowing who'll be at the top each week. Look at the number ones in MTV European Top 20 in 2010: Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway 5 (7 total) Lady GaGa - Bad Romance 1 Ke$ha - TiK ToK 1 Lady GaGa - Bad Romance 1 (2) Ke$ha - TiK ToK 1 (2) Lady GaGa - Bad Romance 1 (3) Ke$ha - TiK ToK 3 (5) Stromae - Alors On Danse 1 Lady GaGa & Beyoncé Knowles - Telephone 1 Stromae - Alors On Danse 1 (2) Lady GaGa & Beyoncé Knowles - Telephone 2 (3) Stromae - Alors On Danse 2 (4) Lady GaGa & Beyoncé Knowles - Telephone 1 (4) Stromae - Alors On Danse 1 (5) Lady GaGa & Beyoncé Knowles - Telephone 1 (5) Stromae - Alors On Danse 1 (6) Lena - Satellite 1 K'naan - Wavin' Flag 3 Katy Perry - California Gurls 4 Shakira - Waka Waka 2 Lady GaGa - Alejandro 1 Shakira - Waka Waka 1 (3) Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP - We No Speak Americano 2 Eminem & Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie 1 Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP - We No Speak Americano 1 (3) Eminem & Rihanna - Love The Way You Lie 6 (7) Rihanna - Only Girl In The World 6 The number ones were not that many but some of the battles for the number 1 spot were great - between "Bad Romance" and "TiK ToK" and especially between "Alors On Danse" and "Telephone"... It was so interesting to see each week which of the two contenders was going to prevail!
January 24, 201114 yr The EURO 200 gives a clear picture of the EU musicscene. You want a chart with many position changes. You can't blame the compilers of the EURO 200 that the chart is like it is. I guess MTV has to change it's policy and must start a voting chart. Viewers who like this can vote for their favorite tracks. Maybe this chart could be as you like it.
January 24, 201114 yr MTV always made up its chart. I want them to keep their chart "made up" and not follow any other ones around.
January 24, 201114 yr Chartboost, I'm certainly not blaming anyone for EURO 200. However, as I said, I don't think excluding the charts from Norway and Switzerland is a good idea. And I doubt that EURO 200 really gives a clear picture since I'm not sure at all how real the charts they use from Eastern Europe are. But, of course, there is nothing wrong with the chart existing - it just shouldn't be used as a basis for MTV European Top 20! I definitely don't want viewers to vote for European Top 20. Just like Euphorique, I want MTV Europe themselves to determine what the chart will be. As long as it includes the most successful songs across Europe, everything's going to be great!

As you know the EURO 200 is compiled for the 27 states of the EU. Norway and Switzerland have no membership of the union. I guess the Eastern-European states have only airplay charts, but the EURO 200 makes no secret of it that they count airplay as well for compiling the chart. For me it's "the brightest view on the European Union musicscene". I guess the editors from MTV think the same. By the way; Is MTV's European Top 20 on television all around Europe? Edited January 24, 201114 yr by Chartboost

BLACK EYED PEAS The Time (Dirty Bit) 6 I have to admit, I find the idea #1 battles where two songs swop places over several weeks looks really messy. The reason why this happened in the Billboard European Top 100 is because France, Germany and UK have a bigger influence on the chart than countries like Denmark, Norway, Spain, Italy, etc... For eg; when Stromae first hit #1 in the European Top 100, 'Alors On Danse' was #11 in the HET30 the same week. The reason for this is because I treat every country equally as I find this more interesting to see exactly track finishes the week on top with a level playing field. In fact, I don't even think 'Alors On Danse' had even charted in France this particular week. It charted several weeks later when the track eventually did hit #1 in the HET30. There's only ever been the one instance in the HET30 where two singles swopped places with each other: HITSTASTIC EUROPEAN NUMBER ONES - 2001 --- Date Artist Record Wks 8 23-Jun-01 to 20-Jul-01 SHAGGY featuring RAYVON Angel 4 9 21-Jul-01 to 03-Aug-01 CHRISTINA AGUILERA, LIL KIM, MYA & PINK Lady Marmalade 2 re 04-Aug-01 to 17-Aug-01 SHAGGY featuring RAYVON Angel 2 re 18-Aug-01 to 21-Sep-01 CHRISTINA AGUILERA, LIL KIM, MYA & PINK Lady Marmalade 5 Since then there has never been a song that's dropped from the no. 1 spot only to reclaim the top spot a couple of weeks later.
