June 4, 201114 yr Is this the International ENGLISH SPEAKING chart? Because certainly the Asia chart does not go like that at all..
June 4, 201114 yr Author Is this the International ENGLISH SPEAKING chart? Because certainly the Asia chart does not go like that at all.. The Asian chart is calculated on all countries geographically in Asia which includes countries such as Jordan, Israel, Uzbekistan etc. It's also presumably true that a few of the charts used are the international ones excluding local repertoire but dont think this would make much difference as each individual chart used used to compile the "international chart" is given an equal weighting, the chart thus reflects cross border popularity so it would be very difficult for say a Japanese or Korean song to chart as the international appeal is nowhere near as great as US music.AKB48 is top in Japan but it would need to chart highly in several other countries ; on a purely sales basis it would chart I assume because of the size of the Japanese market. June 4, 201114 yr If it was on a sales basis, AKB48 would be #1 as they sold 1.3 million+ singles. Thus this international chart doesn't really reflect the Asia chart as the biggest Asian music industries are Japan and Korea and yet they're nowhere to be seen in the chart. Wouldn't this chart be better classified as the most charted song in a region judged by positions? Or an unweighted chart?

June 5, 201114 yr Someone used to post a chart here which was done on sales only, and there were a few weeks where songs that charted in Japan, and nowhere else, still managed to get #1. The sales there are THAT high! :o

I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject, but from my knowledge songs in Japan tend to be quite frontloaded.

Hehe, my name comes in handy when it comes to Japan's official chart  Yes, mediatraffic posts worldwide singles but their single chart isn't 100% reliable as it includes air-play as well. AKB48 got it this week with 750,000+ points (biggest first week sales ever since 2004 the chart started) but it was VERY frontloaded, the sale were this high due to the election for the member ranking (there are over 48 girls in this girl group...) and hence people buy multiple copies to vote for their favourite member hence the high sales. The mediatraffic album on the other hand is more reliable as it's based totally on sales only.

Mediatraffic is 70% sales/30% airplay. Weighting is an issue with China and India I would have thought. Huge markets, no official charts, mostly illegal downloads at least for China.
June 6, 201114 yr China and India's music market is dominated by illegal products. I mean I go to China every single summer and it's legal to copy DVDs and CDs and sell them out in the local street shops. I mean who wants to buy £10+ for an album when they can literally get it for 50p or less? AKB48 sold 1.33mil I think in a week just purely PHYSICAL CDs. Digitally it's faring very well as well. We will never get anywhere in the world selling 1.33 million+ physical cd of a single single. I believe Japan is the only music industry in the world in which singles are still largely distributed through physically compared to downloads. Also, selling 1.33 million is not too bad for each AKB48 member. Since one CD is on average around £12 that brings the number already to £15,960,000 through just physical cds alone excluding the downloads. I mean i'm pretty sure each one of them earns quite a bit even though there is 48 members.
