July 23, 200618 yr Chartbeat from Billboard.com July 20, 2006, Fred Bronson 'BAD' IS THE NEW GOOD: A tenacious Daniel Powter maintains his grip on pole position on the Adult Contemporary chart, giving his debut single "Bad Day" (Warner Bros.) a 12th week at the top. That puts "Bad Day" into a tie as the fifth longest-running AC No. 1 by a solo male vocalist in the chart's history. The champ is Phil Collins, whose "Tarzan" soundtrack hit "You'll Be in My Heart" ruled for 19 weeks. Here is a list of the longest-running AC chart-toppers by solo male singers: 19 weeks: "You'll Be in My Heart," Phil Collins (1999) 18 weeks: "Lonely No More," Rob Thomas (2005) 15 weeks: "Hero," Enrique Iglesias (2001) 13 weeks: "Change the World," Eric Clapton (1996) 12 weeks: "The River of Dreams," Billy Joel (1993) 12 weeks: "Said I Loved You...But I Lied," Michael Bolton (1993) 12 weeks: "Kiss from a Rose," Seal (1995) 12 weeks: "Bad Day," Daniel Powter (2006) 11 weeks: "Now and Forever," Richard Marx (1994) 10 weeks: "Big Bad John," Jimmy Dean (1961) 10 weeks: "King of the Road," Roger Miller (1965) 10 weeks: "This Guy's in Love With You," Herb Alpert (1968) 10 weeks: "Time Passages," Al Stewart (1978) 10 weeks: "Something About the Way You Look Tonight," Elton John (1997) One more week at No. 1 will break Daniel Powter out of the four-way tie for fifth place and equal Eric Clapton's 13-week reign in 1996 with "Change the World." "Bad Day" is already the longest-running AC No. 1 by a solo male vocalist on the Warner Bros. imprint; Clapton's "Change the World" was released on sister label Reprise. To become the longest-running AC No. 1 ever issued on the Warner Bros. imprint, "Bad Day" will have to outlast the 17-week run of Faith Hill's "Breathe" in 2000. NEWS OF THE 'WORLD': John Mayer's sixth entry on The Billboard Hot 100 is the highest debut of his career. Fueled by sales of digital downloads, "Waiting on the World to Change" (Aware/Columbia) bows at No. 25. Mayer's first four singles all debuted in the 60s; his second chart entry, "Your Body Is a Wonderland," was his highest debut until now, opening at No. 63 in November 2002. If "Waiting on the World to Change" gathers momentum, it will become Mayer's fourth song to peak in the top 20. His first chart entry, "No Such Thing," remains his biggest hit to date. That track went to No. 13 in August 2002. Mayer's other top 20 hit was "Daughters," No. 19 in January 2005. With "Waiting on the World to Change" making its entrance, Mayer has had at least one song debut on the Hot 100 every year since he first charted in 2002. The new song expands his chart span to four years, one month and three weeks. BY ANY OTHER NAME: Alan Jackson's 68th chart entry on Hot Country Songs is off to a quick start, debuting at No. 42. That means "Like Red on a Rose" (Arista) is Jackson's highest-debuting solo effort since Nov. 24, 2001, when his 9/11-inspired "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)" entered at No. 25. Since then, Jackson has had two stellar debuts with collaborations. His duet with Jimmy Buffett on "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" clocked in at No. 31 the week of June 21, 2003. A remake of Hank Williams' "Hey Good Lookin'" by Buffett with Clint Black, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, George Strait and Jackson bowed at No. 36 the week of May 29, 2004. It's almost been a year since Jackson's last single debuted. "USA Today" first saw chart ink the week of Aug. 27, 2005. GIVE 'PIECES' A CHANCE: They could have called themselves Harp and Branch, but Jessica Harp and Michelle Branch went with the Wreckers, and their debut single makes some chart history this week. "Leave the Pieces" (Maverick/Warner Bros.) advances 11-8, making it the first debut single from a duo to enter the top 10 in this century. The last debut single from a duo to land in the top 10 was "Lonely and Gone" by Montgomery Gentry in October 1999. That single peaked at No. 5. If the Wreckers can reach the top of the chart, "Leave the Pieces" will be the first debut single from a duo to be No. 1 since "Brand New Man" by Brooks and Dunn ruled for two weeks in September 1991. Two Chart Beat readers from Nebraska both had something to add about Branch's success on the country chart. Shawn Michaels of Tekamah and John Maverick of Burt County pointed out that Branch is one of the few artists to have top 10 hits on Hot Country Songs, the Hot 100, the Adult Contemporary chart and Modern Rock Tracks. Maverick added that Branch joins a list of artists who have gone top 10 on the Hot 100, AC and country charts that includes Lonestar, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Bon Jovi, Sting and Uncle Kracker. Michaels and Maverick both had something to say about the latest Brooks and Dunn hit, which features Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill. "Building Bridges" (Arista) moves 15-13 this week, making it a candidate for the top 10. The Nebraskans pointed out that this would be Crow's first top 10 hit on the country tally, and Gill's first top 10 hit since "Feels Like Love" went to No. 6 in 2000. "Burning Bridges" is already Crow's biggest hit on the country survey. She first appeared on this chart in 2002 when she duetted with Kid Rock on "Picture," which peaked at No. 21. That was Crow's biggest country hit until now. She also charted with two solo recordings: "The First Cut Is the Deepest" reached No. 35 and "No Depression in Heaven" stopped at No. 55, both in 2004.
