January 21, 201114 yr Author http://australian-charts.com/forum.asp Gavin Ryan's Chartifacts (Thanks to Gavin Ryan) Singles This past week marked the middle of summer, but with the amount of flooding around the country, you’d think it was the middle of winter. And so the charts are also affected, as in the middle of summer we are struck by a wynter blast, with US singer Wynter Gordon leaping from last weeks No.5 to No.1 with her debut single “Dirty Talk”. Ms. Gordon becomes the 386th American artist to hit the top of our charts, with the 638th song by an American act. “Dirty Talk” becomes the first NEW No.1 single for 2011, and the 975th No.1 single in Australia (1940 to 2011), plus it’s also the first No.1 for local dance label Neon Records (created by TV Rock members), who also have current charters Adrian Lux and Zoe Badwi, plus Dirty South and Agnes on their label. “Dirty Talk” is only the second song to feature ‘Dirty’ in its title, the previous one only happened just last year, “The Time (Dirty Bit)” by The Black Eyed Peas (TW-8), plus its also only the second time for ‘Talk’ to hit the top, the last such song was almost nineteen years ago, “Let’s Talk About Sex” by Salt-N-Pepa (3 weeks; 26-Jan-92 to 16-Feb-92). Also for the third time in the 71 year history of Australian charts, we have had our third No.1 single in the first three weeks of the year. The first time this happened was back in 1953 when the hangover from 1952 stayed atop for a seventh and final week (22-Nov-52 to 3-Jan-53) “Auf Wiedersehn, Sweetheart” by Vera Lynn, followed by a single week for “Half as Much” by Rosemary Clooney (10-Jan-53), and then for six weeks from 17th January in 1953 “You Belong to Me” by Jo Stafford / Dean Martin. The second time this occurred was in 1976 with a same sweep at the top to 1953. Abba’s “Mama Mia” spent it’s tenth week at the top on the 5th of January in 1976, then a week later another Abba song “SOS” (12-Jan-76) went to the top for a single week, then from 19-Jan-76 Australian rockers Ted Mulry Gang took their only No.1 “Jump in My Car” to the top, where it stayed for six weeks. Now this week we see this occur for the third time with “Dirty Talk” taking over from “Who’s That Girl” second week, which took over from “Grenade” after three broken weeks. If Enrique or Britney claim the No.1 spot next week it will be the first time EVER that we’ve had four No.1’s in the first four weeks of the year. Last weeks zooming track for Enrique Iglesias, “Tonight (I’m Lovin’/F**kin’ You)” moves up one place to a new peak of No.2, helped by both versions inside the download Top 30 (Lovin’ at No.25, F**kin’ at No.4), and matching the peak of his July 2010 track “I Like it” which stayed at No.2 for four weeks. The two tracks that move up push down the former two No.1 singles from this year, Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” is down a place to No.3, and last weeks No.1 “Who’s That Girl” for Guy Sebastian drops three places to No.4. These two also push down last weeks return to No.4, now at No.5, for Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x”. Jumping up seven places to No.6 and scoring her first Top 10 single is former America’s Got Talent (Series 1) contestant Alexis Jordan, and her debut single “Happiness”. And also scoring a new peak is “Who’s That Chick” for David Guetta and Rihanna, who move up two please to No.7 this week. “The Time (Dirty Bit)” for The Black Eyed Peas is down one place to No.8, and falling down three spots to No.9 is Katy Perry’s “Firework”. The highest new entry (and after two days of sales, it went to iTunes on Wednesday) debuts at No.10, and is the first taste of Britney Spears’ forthcoming seventh album (due March 15th, no title as yet) entitled “Hold it Against Me”. It is Britney’s 27th charting single here in Australia, her last being “3” (March 2010) which peaked at No.6, and this new track has initially charted in Belgium, Finland and Ireland this past week. A couple of places lower at No.12 we see the fourth track from Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” (TW-6) album entitled “E.T.” debut. In comparison, Katy’s fourth single from her first album “One of the Boys” (TW-70) was “Thinking of You” which reached No.34 in late June of 2009. NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Flo Rida’s “Turn Around (5,4,3,2,1)” climbs a few places to a new peak of No.14, and right behind him is the biggest climbing track of the week, up twenty-one places to No.15 it’s “I Just Had Sex” by The Lonely Island feat Akon. The past three weeks Martin Solveig and Dragonette have been making big jumps, and this week is no different, as their single “Hello” is up eight places to No.21. Another dance track that leaps is “Take Over Control” for Afrojack and Eva Simons, which is up nine spots to No.23. Perth rapper Drapht hits the Top 30 at No.30 with his single “Rapunzel”, and US rockers Neon Trees break into the Top 40 at No.37 with their debut single “Animal”. And lastly breaking into the Top 50 at No.50 is The Script with their latest track “Nothing”, up eight places from last week. Kanye West regains his Top 10 album placing for his latest set “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” (TW-10), and the second single from the album debuts at No.46 this week entitled “All of the Lights” featuring guest vocalist Rihanna. The albums first released single “Runaway” hit No.49 in December, and this week it rises sixteen places to No.60. This is Kanye’s 26th ARIA Chart appearance overall (including his guest appearances). Below Top 50: Only one new peak in the lower 100 this week, it goes to Justin Bieber’s “Pray”, which climbs four places to a new peak of No.71. Michael Jackson and Akon’s “Hold My Hand” is back up nine places to No.54. Mike Posner’s second single “Please Don’t Go” is back up six places to No.58. Six new entries in the lower part of the chart, with Eminem’s new track “Space Bound” debuting at No.69, now the fourth single from his “Recovery” album. Local rappers Bliss N’ Eso score a third hit from their former No.1 album “Running on Air” (TW-30) with “Reflections” debuting at No.86 New Zealand five piece The Naked and Famous debut with the first album “Passive Me, Aggressive You” at No.94, and their first two singles enter the ARIA Singles Chart this week. Their first single “Young Blood” debuted at No.1 in NZ in June 2010, and this week it enters at No.74 here, plus second single “Punching in a Dream” (NZ: No.11; Aug-2010) also enters our charts, debuting at No.82. UK Singer Cheryl Cole hit No.5 in late March 2010 with “3 Words”, and followed that up in late May with the No.54 single “Fight for This Love”. Now her third ARIA Chart entry debuts at No.78 entitled “Promise This”. It hit No.1 in November 2010 in the UK, and is the first single from her current second album “Messy Little Raindrops”. Swedish 21 year-old DJ Tim Berg (born 8/9/89 as Tim Bergling) debuts with his first ARIA Singles Chart entry at No.92 entitled “Seek Bromance”. The original instrumental by Tim was called “Bromance”, and No.1 in Belgium, No.5 in The Netherlands and No.16 in Sweden. A remixed version with vocals taken from the song “Love You Seek” by DJ Samuele Sartini featuring Amanda Wilson is now known as “Seek Bromance” and that version went Top 15 in the UK, Scotland and France, and to Nop.5 in Denmark. Albums Nine weeks at No.1 for P!nk’s “Greatest Hits… So Far”, helping it to become the equal-fourth longest running No.1 “GH/Best of’ in Australian Album Chart History (1965-2011), matching the nine weeks of #1’s for The Beatles (2000) and “Greatest Hits” for Robbie Williams (2004). The Beatles spent their last week at the top this week in 2001 (15-Jan) and Robbie Williams had been knocked off the top this week in 2005 (17-Jan), having racked up his ninth week in the second week of 2005. So this could be an indicator that maybe next week a new No.1 album could take over, otherwise if P!nk holds for a tenth week she’ll equal Crowded House’s “Recurring Dream” for a ten week run at the top. Nine weeks was also the amount of time her last album “Funhouse” spent at No.1, and P!nk has now accumulated twenty weeks at No.1 on our album charts, amassing the same amount of weeks at the top as Mariah Carey (who also did it with three albums), who are now both equal 21st on the list of ‘Accumulated Weeks at No.1: Albums’. Bon Jovi hold the No.2 position with their “Greatest Hits” collection, but moving up again to a new peak is possible No.1 contender “Doo-Wops and Hooligans” from Bruno Mars, which is at No.3 this week, pushing the self-titled album for Altiyan Childs down to No.4 after two weeks at three. Guy Sebastian’s best of “Twenty Ten” drops back one place to No.5, and holding at No.6 and No.7 respectively is Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” and Rihanna’s “Loud”. Glee’s “Volume 4” Soundtrack drops down one place to No.8, but either side of them we see two re-entries to the Top 10. “Down the Way” for Angus & Julia Stone climbs three places to No.8, and also climbing three to No.10 is Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”. MOVERS & PEAKERS: “Tron: Legacy” Soundtrack by Daft Punk climbs one place to a new peak of No.17, and the third and final Top 50 peak comes from New York based band The National who just finished their tour here (Jan 7th to Jan 10th), and see their former No.41 album “High Violet” (17-May-2010) jump eighteen places to a new peak of No.29. Gypsy and the Cat’s album “Gilgamesh” jumps twelve places to No.26, two places lower than its former peak of No.24, and up nine places to No.33 is the “Greatest Hits” set for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Irish band Two Door Cinema Club hit our shores at the start of February, and will be a part of The Laneway Festival throughout that month, so their debut album “Tourist History” has been re-issued as a tour edition, the original version hitting No.100 upon debut at the end of May 2010, then it-re-entered in mid August at No.95 (peaking there too), and now it re-enters to another new peak this week of No.61. Christina Aguilera’s first feature film “Burlesque”, also starring Cher, opens in cinemas around Australia on January 20th, and the soundtrack this week enters at No.68. The only other new entry this week is from New Zealand band The Naked and Famous, who debut at No.94 with their first album “Passive Me, Aggressive You”.
