Posted January 24, 201114 yr NME had a Hendrix-fest last Autumn; Hendrix on the cover, 4 or 5 Hendrix features etc. One of these articles listed modern guitarists and named them his "Natural Heirs" so to speak. ("Children of Jimi") They picked: - Carrie Brownstein - Josh Homme - James Dean Bradfield - Graham Coxon - Kevin Shields - Jack White - Johnny Marr - Jonny Greenwood - Andy Falkous - Matt Bellamy - Nick Zinner OK…. Josh Homme, Jack White aside (and maybe Jonny Greenwood)….. I'm actually in pain laughing at this list, what a joke!? The rest of these guys (and token female) don't come close to being in the same league as Hendrix! If ABBA had been a guitar band, the others would've been their guitarists! Hendrix was raw, charismatic, hugely inventive and poetic. They are formulaic, predictable, corny and frankly boring as f***! That's without even mentioning that at the core of JH's longevity and legend is the fact that he was a blues musician; yes he absolutely made blues contemporary for his time and was not a dust laden tradition keeper but he was a blues man through and through. (Only Jack White & Josh Homme have any real blues going on.) Let's have it right!
January 24, 201114 yr I think you're being a little harsh on Matt Bellamy, he's brought guitar histrionics back to stadium rock in an era where it was distinctly lacking.
January 24, 201114 yr WTF? You are describing Kevin Shields as formulaic, predictable and corny. You, sir, obviously do not know the first thing about modern guitarists. Take your ignorance and parade it around somewhere else. BTW I do think Hendrix was the greatest guitarist ever and nobody could ever match up to him for me but FFS you are spouting twaddle.
January 25, 201114 yr I think you're being a little harsh on Matt Bellamy, he's brought guitar histrionics back to stadium rock in an era where it was distinctly lacking. Bellamy's great, but he's a very technical player (being classically trained as he is), whereas Hendrix basically made it up as he went along, re-writing all the rules... Bellamy should really be compared more to people such as Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Brian May or Jimmy Page... IMHO, this list has several pretty glaring omissions... J Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) Will Sargeant (Echo and the Bunnymen) Lee Ronaldo (Sonic Youth) J Spaceman/Jason Pierce (Spacemen 3, Spiritualized)
January 25, 201114 yr There has never been another guitarist like Hendrix. He is unique. This list shouldn't be a bunch of guitarist like Hendrix as none of them are but all may have been inspired by him and tried to use some of his tricks. Comparing Hendrix to others like Shields, Bellamy, White etc is like comparing Salvador Dali to Picasso, Da Vinci or Constable. All great in their own right but they're just trying to do their own thing and present their own vision of their art form. The list is nonsense even as a concept
