Posted February 6, 201114 yr One of the so-called BIG 5 countries, France, have announced their participant for this year's Eurovision Song Contest. After an internal choice, French broadcaster France 3 revealed that it will be in the hands of Amaury Vassili to get the trophy for his native country. It would be the first victory for France since 1977 when Marie Myriam proved to be successful with L'Oiseau Et L'Enfant. The song with which Amaury Vassili will represent France in the 2011 Eurovison Song Contest is called Sonniu - sung fully in the Corsican language - which means Dream in English. The premiere of the song will take place at a later date. Amaury Vassili is no stranger to the French music scene. The 21-year-old opera singer has already released two albums in France called Vincero and Cantero with which he sold more than 250000 copies. His latest album will soon be released in South Africa too. Amaury has performed on stage with stars like Natasha St. Pier who represented France in the 2001 Eurovision Song Contest. Special jury The decision was taken by a special jury. Among the selection comittee members were Pierre Sled, Manager of France3 Programs, Marie Claire Mezerette, Manager of the Entertainement Department, plus Frederick Valencak among others. As Pierre Sled pointed out "our choice was driven by the desire to promote a young talented artist representing the best of the French music and its diversity. That's why we quickly agreed an opera singer was the most elegant option. Amaury is an angel of music with a powerful voice. Without any hesitation, he was definitely the perfect choice." About the song Daniel Moyne and Quentin Bachelet (son of the famous French singer, Pierre Bachelet) composed the song and Jean-Pierre Marcellesi, famous Corsican singer, wrote the lyrics fully in the Corsican language, which perfectly fits the opera song. Sonniu is composed like a bolero which goes crescendo at the end of the song and it perfectly suits Amaury's amazing voice. For the third time since its very first participation in 1956, France will be represented by a song fully in a regional language. Bruno Berbéres, Head of the French Delegation, declared that "following the commercial success of Sébastien Tellier, Patrica Kaas and Jessy Matador, we have a lot of expections on the way how Amaury and Sonniu will be welcomed by the international audience". http://www.wlct.org/trustnews/news%20images/Amaury-Vassili-1.jpg
February 6, 201114 yr I think Amaury might be a surprise success in Eurovision. I've never heard of him before but there's actually a page about him on MTV Portugal :o
February 7, 201114 yr :nocheer: Don't get me wrong, I like opera (Slovenia 2007 = best ESC song ever), but I've never really liked French/Corsican/Italian male opera. Slovenia was haunting and memorable, while I fear this may be "too" opera. I'd love to be proven wrong, though...
March 4, 201114 yr Maybe they should just send the instrumental, as I love the backing music but am not a fan of the vocals!
March 5, 201114 yr I doubt many countries will be entering traditional sounding opera songs which means France's entry could well stand out. I will eventually give all this years Eurovision tracks a listen once they've been announced. I've already heard Ireland (meh!!! ), Norway and Germany. So far 'Taken By A Stranger' is my fave even though it's nowhere near as good as 'Satellite'.
March 7, 201114 yr Not really my sort of thing, but kudos to France for trying something completely different yet again!
March 7, 201114 yr I know it's early days but having just heard 'Sognu' in full, that really does sound like a contender to win ESC 2011.
March 7, 201114 yr I think this will actually do really well! Definitely going to score highly with the juries, based on their recent voting patterns. Well, Jade Ewen and Patricia Kaas scored well from them anyway, and this is certainly very 'classy' too.
March 7, 201114 yr I don't know if it would win the juries vote, but yes, probably top 3/5 with them. Could this well be the year when the juries favor one song, the tele-vote another, and then a different winner altogether when combined?
March 7, 201114 yr I rather like it, though I do agree it won't bring in the televoters. He is quite pretty though.
