I don't understand this logic whatsoever. If the role is acted well then you won't watch it thinking 'that's an American playing Margaret Thatcher', you'll watch it thinking 'that's Margaret Thatcher'.

I agree with this. Surely the mark of the best actress is the fact that she can play the part better than anyone else, regardless of her nationality. And let's be honest, learning accents is "Acting 101" stuff. Who the hell made the rules to say that only British actors can play British characters?

Given that Thatcher is an inhuman witch shouldn't we be complaning about her being played a person at all?

In your opinion. This isn't a political thread it's about a film surely? Which none of us have seen yet, I'm sure we can give an opinion on the film without getting into personal political opinion?....

Of course it's my opinion. But calm down. It's called Reductio Ad Absurdum. I thought it was obvious what I was doing

I wasn't aware I wasn't calm! Now you've explained in latin I'm quite happy with it! :D

Isn't that the principle that the Comic Strip team applied when they were taking the piss out Hollywood actors being cast in totally innappropriate roles... So, you'd get their spoof on the Miner's strike called "Strike", with Pete Richardson playing Al Pacino playing Arthur Scargill and Jennifer Saunders playing Meryl Streep playing Mrs Scargill or in "GLC", when you had Robbie Coltrane playing Charles Bronson playing Ken Livingstone and Jennifer Saunders playing Bridgette Nielson playing Maggie.....

Yes I had shivers watching that. Regardless of what the film is like (and I expect it will be some quality storytelling) this is obviously going to be a PERFORMANCE OF LIFE from Meryl.

That gave me shivers too, it looks amazing. Meryl was always going to BRING IT, but the rest of it looks really good too. It looks like its going to have plenty of moments (of life) too.

The reviews are coming in and they're mostly mixed, 3/5 sort of affairs but there's unanimous praise for Meryl's performance:

Yet Streep, it transpires, is the one great weapon of this often silly and suspect picture. Her performance is astonishing and all but flawless; a masterpiece of mimicry which re-imagines Thatcher in all her half-forgotten glory. Streep has the basilisk stare; the tilted, faintly predatory posture. Her delivery, too, is eerily good – a show of demure solicitude, invariably overtaken by steely, wild-eyed stridency.

This was always going to be a Meryl vehicle through and through. No doubt there'll be enough moments for me to declare it amazing all the same.
This looks great! I'm actually taking a module on Thatcherism this semester (even though I hate her :P) so I think I'll definitely see this. :D

Why, I doubt you'll actually gain any meaningful insights which would help you with your course... Hollywood is hardly known for its realistic treatments of historical figures or facts.... Similarly if you were doing a module on 12th Century Scottish History, I would hardly recommend "Braveheart" as a learning aid.... -_-

I'm not expecting to gain any knowledge from it, I just think it's a must-see considering I'm taking an entire module dedicated to her. :heehee:

From the clips I've seen, I'm actually prepared to accept it as a comedy to be honest...

Why do I get the feeling this is being made to be like she is some kind of inspirational figure?

I can't quite put into words how epic Meryl's performance in this film looks to be. She's surely going to win everything going.

Joao it's not a film about how her politics affected the country. It's a film about how one woman defied the odds.

The more I see of this film, the more I know it's going to be amazing. Meryl's peformance is clearly going to be a PERF OF LIFE. As I've said a few times in this thread already (and Jark has said above), this film is about how Margaret Thatcher overcame all the odds against her. Whether or not I, or anyone else, agreed with her policies should be entirely seperate of the matter. Perhaps if the film was trying to airbrush her history to make it look like she was some kind of Messianic saviour then I could understand, but it doesn't seem to be doing that. Purely in terms of being the first female Prime Minister of the UK, I say painting her as an Inspirational figure is quite justified.

I saw this tonight and rather enjoyed it. The film itself is structured differently to what I expected but I found it to be engaging and rather interesting.

I don't like the woman, and the only policy I agree with is the defending of our sovereign territory against the Argentinians. (No Grimly I don't give a flying fuck how we ended up with those two rocks, nor do I care that they are probably rightfully Argentina's. They invaded British Sovereign Territory and this country would have done itself a great disservice if we sat back and allowed our soil and the home of some of our citizens to be invaded by a foreign nation.) HOWEVER I really did like the film. It doesn't paint her to be a saint at all, it shows both the good and the bad. It shows what she overcame to make it into power, her journey through the ranks to PM and her time as PM.
