Posted March 3, 201114 yr Ok so I nicked this idea from the Scandipop blog, but I had been wanting to do some sort of countdown/make a new playlist for my iPod (:P) so here is my top 50 Melodifestivalen entries since the inception of the 32 song/4 semi format in 2002. A majority of the songs are from the second half of the decade (2007-2009 seemed particularly strong) but there are a a handful from the earlier years. So here we go, I'll embed two from each section which are bolded; 50. Johnson & Häggkvist - One Love (2008 - AC) 49. Nicke Borg - Leaving Home (2011 - TBC) 48. Velvet - The Queen (2009 - DNQ) 47. BWO - Lay Your Love On Me (2008 - 3rd) 46. Shirley Clamp - Min Kärlek (2004 - 2nd) 45. Anna Sahlene & Maria Haukaas Storeng - Killing Me Tenderly (2009 - DNQ) 44. Sebastian - When The Night Comes Falling (2007 - 9th) 43. Caracola - Smiling In Love (2008 - AC) 42. Amy Diamond - Thank You (2008 - 8th) 41. Nanne Grönwall - Håll Om Mig (2005 - 2nd) ivNU4PGNtTM _W1Stm1pQWU Kicking off proceedings then is the wonderful duet between Carola and Andreas Johnson (both of whom will feature again on this countdown). The public hated Carola by this point though and it progressed no further than Andra Chansen :( Nicke Borg's shockingly good entry from this year, Velvet's unjust flop from 2009 and BWO's Madonna - Hung Up inspired 3rd place entry from 2008 also feature. Shirley Clamp's signature anthem is at No.46, Anna/Maria's Schlager meets Bond pastiche is at No.45 and one of this year's entrants with his former better entry, Sebastian is at No.44! Chirpy girlband Caracola are at No.43 - BJSC fans might recognise two of the girls in the band, they later went on to form the duo Sheelah! Embarrassingly, Amy Diamond almost creeps into the top 40 with the kiddy pop anthem Thank You and just missing the top 40 is the song that wuz robbed into 2005, Håll Om Mig by legend Nanne, who also took part in the UK selection in 2001 with Men, losing to Lindsay D and a few others! Her finest moment of course being Den Vilda, which would easily be top 5 if I was doing an all time Melodifestivalen countdown.
March 3, 201114 yr Author 40. Sara Varga - Spring För Livet (2011 - TBC) 39. Caroline Af Ugglas - Tror På Dig (2007 - DNQ) 38. Marie Lindberg - Trying To Recall (2007 - 5th) 37. Uno & Irma - God Morgon (2007 - AC) 36. Pernilla Wahlgren & Jan Johansen - Let Your Spirit Fly (2003 - 2nd) 35. Suzzie Tapper - Visst Finns Mirakel (2008 - AC) 34. Sanna Nielsen - Vågar Du, Vågar Jag (2007 - 7th) 33. Alcazar - Headlines (2010 - AC) 32. Cosmo4 - What's Your Name (2007 - DNQ) 31. Eric Saade - Popular (2011 - TBC) ihq8FwuwzAc AsscEelCX1k 6WASuS9nBx8 Kicking off with this year's lovely entry from Sara Varga, hopefully it can make it out of AC somehow! Caroline Af Ugglas' first MF entry is embedded, a bit of a carnival-esque song, it's very good and was probably misunderstood hence the DNQ! Marie Lindberg if you like was akin to the wildcard's Julia and Jonas from this year - not a professional artist, but a school teacher who got a shot in the contest with her own (very simple, yet effective) song and finished 5th, becoming a star in the process and scoring herself a #1 album! A song that I and probably nobody else loves from duo Uno & Irma is at No.37, whilst 2003's poptastic runner up is 36th!!! A lovely Nordic ballad from some middle aged woman is No.35, I seem to have a great affinity to the 2008 entries as they laid the foundation for my final term uni dissertation on Melodifestivalen about this time three years go! The first of three Sanna Nielsen songs is at No.34, Alcazar's entry from last year is at No.33 and at No.32 is a song I've considered sending to BJSC more than once, an incredibly infectious girlband pop song which admittedly sounds far better in studio form than live! And finally, this year's tipped victor Eric Saade is at No.31 with Popular although no doubt would be a lot higher if I was to do this list later on...
March 3, 201114 yr I was thinking of doing one of these also, and then making a compilation album of the top 50 to go alongside the demo disc from the new boxset. Would save me a good £40 or so :kink: 47. BWO - Lay Your Love On Me (2008 - 3rd) This was my favourite from the 2008 contest. I'm a fan of Hero, but how on earth could Charlotte manage to beat this and Sanna? :( 43. Caracola - Smiling In Love (2008 - AC) Sheelah's old group! I did like this one, but wasn't a huge fan of their other material. Sheelah seem to be releasing far better songs now! 41. Nanne Grönwall - Håll Om Mig (2005 - 2nd) Absolutely criminal that this didn't win over Las Vegas :\ 40. Sara Varga - Spring För Livet (2011 - TBC) One of my major favourites from this years contest, can't believe it's up against my ultimate favourite in AC :drama: 38. Marie Lindberg - Trying To Recall (2007 - 5th) This was so adorable, the album was beyond dull sadly, but what a fantastic song from such an unknown act 33. Alcazar - Headlines (2010 - AC) Not their best song, but this should have made the final 31. Eric Saade - Popular (2011 - TBC) I'll be happy if this wins. The production and backing track, as you've said before, is great! I'm just not a fan of the lyrics or the glass walls

See I prefer Hero to this but I can see that both this and Sanna would have made better entries with bigger potential of doing well in ESC... 43. Yep indeed! I don't think I've heard any of their other material, but I don't think I'll bother looking into it - they are amazing as Sheelah though  40. It's outrageous, I'd love all 4 of the acts in that half of the duel to be in the final actually, whereas as much as I like a couple of them I don't care overmuch if any of The Moniker, Shirley's Angels, Linda Pritchard or Pernilla Andersson are in the final :drama: Why can't The Moniker and Pernilla just swap places with Jenny and Sara or something  38. I never heard the album but singer/songwriter affairs do tend to be either amazing or completely forgettable and never inbetween so I'm not surprised to hear that. 33. I agree, all three of their other entries are still to come, thankfully all of which made the final! :D 31. Yes I agree now - I've come around to it winning, it's in my top 3 of this year now along with two other songs still to come. The problem with the glass is that it distracted from his vocal because he's cowering to protect himself for a couple of seconds
March 4, 201114 yr Author 30. Friends - The One That You Need (2002 - 8th) 29. Linda Bengtzing - Alla Flickor (2005 - 9th) 28. Jill Johnson - Crazy In Love (2003 - 4th) 27. Alcazar - Not A Sinner, Nor A Saint (2003 - 3rd) 26. Mans Zelmerlow - Cara Mia (2007 - 3rd) 25. Ola - Love In Stereo (2008 - AC) 24. The Ark - The Worrying Kind (2007 - 1st) 23. BWO - Temple Of Love (2006 - 2nd) 22. Sibel - That Is Where I'll Go (2008 - 7th) 21. E.M.D. - Baby Goodbye (2009 - 3rd) NTiPGqA-pf4 wICnT5QYy9k aUWDEhO7h8E Into the top 30 with a song from the very first final to use the new format way back in 2002. Friends represented Sweden in 2001 with the Abba-esque Listen To Your Heartbeat but this song was like a more schlager version of Hear'say's The Way To Your Love, sadly it got nowhere near winning! The legend that is Linda Bengtzing's stomper Alla Flickor is at No.29, and Jill Johnson's infectious country entry from 2003 is at No.28! Also from 2003, Alcazar's 3rd highest entry, which indeed came 3rd after getting out of Andra Chansen! Mans Zelmerlow's now classic pop anthem Cara Mia is at No.26, Ola's bagpipe featuring pop anthem Love In Stereo is one of my favourites of his but didn't quite make it out of AC, not that it mattered as it was beaten by the slightly superior ballad by Sibel, the rousing That Is Where I'll Go!!! Sandwiched in between the two is The Ark's winner and ESC entry from 2007, the glam rock influenced Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) The Worrying Kind. The other two entries here are E.M.D's pop anthem Baby Goodbye, which I still firmly believe that One Direction should cover on their debut album, and highlighted, BWO's Temple Of Love, which finished 2nd in 2006 behind Carola. I didn't follow MF at all back in 2006 (although I heard Carola's song the night she won and promptly ordered it on CD single!), but the BWO runner up also came to my attention at the same time, oddly because Asda FM were playing it the following day and I demanded to know what it was  I took the lyrics down and Googled them and was rather shocked that they'd been playing the MF runner up, which eventually came 2nd in BJSC once we'd all somehow forgotten that it was in fact an MF runner up (when such things were banned)!
March 4, 201114 yr Author 20. Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes (2011 - TBC) 19. Anna Bergendahl - This Is My Life (2010 - 1st) 18. Alcazar - Alcastar (2005 - 3rd) 17. Emilia - You're My World (2009 - 9th) 16. Andreas Johnson - Sing For Me (2006 - 3rd) 15. Mans Zelmerlow - Hope & Glory (2009 - 5th) 14. Agnes - Love Love Love (2009 - 8th) 13. Sanna Nielsen - I'm In Love (2011 - TBC) 12. Sanna Nielsen - Empty Room (2008 - 2nd) 11. Fame - Give Me Your Love (2003 - 1st) YVRzMHtCeDE ertqQL6LRhs T0bcWNcSKLI Kicking off this section with this year's triumphant schlager entry from Jenny Silver, destined to disappear first in Andra Chansen tomorrow :drama: Anna Bergendahl's gorgeous, but maybe misguided 2010 winner is at No.19, their first Eurovision DNQ of course hence the apparent return to loving schlager and uptempos this year (unless Nicke Borg triumphs but it's not exactly the same sort of song as Anna's!). Alcazar wuz also robbed in 2005 by Martin Stenmarck, I mean come on how did that crap beat Nanne AND Alcazar? Big big girl in a big big world Emilia made her return in 2009 with the joyous You're My World which makes it to No.17 here! No.16 is one of three stars in this segment who's actually managed a UK top five hit (along with Emilia and Agnes) - Andreas Johnson! Sing For Me was a strong melodic guitar pop song, sort of/very reminiscent to Denmark's Eurovision entry this year - see for yourself in the video above! No.15 is Mans Zelmerlow's Hope & Glory - who can forget the look of death that he gave upon finding out that he was only 5th in the televote after topping the jury votes and everyone assuming that he was off to Moscow :drama: His realisation that he now had no chance of winning was followed by hysteria in the crowd as everyone speculated who the hell it could now possibly be. All that aside, Hope & Glory is a storming pop song, if just a male version of the winner from the year before... http://gfx.aftonbladet-cdn.se/multimedia/dynamic/00878/mansledde_878756b.jpg No.14 is Agnes, who would become something of an international star two months later with Release Me...maybe she'd have performed better in MF 2010? Sadly the public gave her no support at all and the divine Love Love Love came in 8th in 2009's very strong final...Sanna Nielsen's entry this year, I'm In Love is already 13th in this ranking and will no doubt get higher, and just above is her unforgettable ballad from 2008 - Empty Room, a song which massively reminds me of my final term at uni, perhaps moreso than any other :o It was an emotional time! And of course she got a namecheck or ten in my dissertation! And look at those tears at the end of her performance! It was obvious how much she wanted it, yet the juries plumped for Catwoman and out Sanna went, despite polling a rather incredible 450,000 televotes! And just before the top ten, it's Fame's Give Me Your Love, which likewise also reminds me of something - my GCSE's  I used to listen to this song on my discman (:funky:) along with other 2003 ESC classics such as Nicola, Jemini, Birgitta, Lynn and Ich Troje every day before sitting my exams - no doubt they helped greatly! The song is of course typical generic Scandi-pop but that's almost the best kind! Like every other Swedish entry in the 00's before they started their flopping ways, it finished 5th at Eurovision...
March 4, 201114 yr Author 10. Lena Philipsson - Det Gör Ont (2004 - 1st) 9. Timoteij - Kom (2010 - 5th) 8. Andreas Johnson - A Little Bit Of Love (2007 - 2nd) 7. Malena Ernman - La Voix (2009 - 1st) 6. Sarah Dawn Finer - I Remember Love (2007 - 4th) O4mfvSsY-WM 2EsZhLEn3AU Kicking off the top ten is 2004 winner, the legend aka Lena Philipsson. I did actually prefer the English version to this one, for those incredible innuendo fueled lyrics, but the Swedish original is amazing as well! Timoteij's Kom was a brilliant ethno-pop stomper from the 2010 contest, which would have definitely done better than Anna Bergendahl for them although I admit that it *may* have come across as looking like they were trying to copy Alexander Rybak's success in 2009. Andreas Johnson gets his 3rd and final entry on the countdown with the brilliant A Little Bit Of Love - how GREAT was the top 5 in MF 2007 ? He went one better than in 2006, finishing 2nd with this behind The Ark which he was clearly never going to beat, but I'd have loved to have seen this in Eurovision. Malena Ernman's opera/dance-pop song La Voix marked a career change for her and a great popera album followed - shame it pretty much bombed in ESC (after finishing 4th in its semi!) but I guess the song was completely transformed once the backing vocals on the studio version were replaced with the more relaxed live vocals, which took a lot of 'oomph' away from the song. Still, it was certainly 'a moment' when she won, and a fantastic song! And at No.6 we have balladeer supreme Sarah Dawn Finer! She would have been at #51 with Moving On and was the last song that I cut from this countdown but I still far prefer the song that made her famous. On the face of it a fairly simple ballad, which builds and builds to a gospel choir crescendo it's probably no surprise that I love this, considering how I love Austria's entry this year, which shares many of its characteristics. Couldn't quite crack that amazing male led top three in 2007 but this was a worthy 4th place and a now classic schlager ballad which just about edges out Empty Room in the 'sad emotional' stakes lyrically even if Sanna did break down into tears at the end of her performance. Shame I never charted this in 2007 as it's definitely a '#1 that never was'...
March 4, 201114 yr Author 5. Caroline Af Ugglas - Snälla Snälla (2009 - 2nd) 4. Carola - Evighet (2006 - 1st) 3. Salem Al Fakir - Keep On Walking (2010 - 2nd) 2. Charlotte Perrelli - Hero (2008 - 1st) 1. Alcazar - Stay The Night (2009 - 5th) 9fbDiFvD9AI i-CPqwElZrg Aaaaaand the final five - oddball Caroline Af Ugglas kicks it off with the sublime Snälla Snälla - still an absolutely stunning song. I do wish it had got those 4,000 extra televotes needed to edge it past Malena and I genuinely believed that she would become the first winner to have qualified out of Andra Chansen. And if she'd performed in the pimp slot (which Malena got) rather than bloody death slot second then I think she easily would have done! This would have been such a different and incredible Eurovision entry, I'm genuinely intrigued as to how it would have done but now we'll never know. Carola got Sweden's last good Eurovision result, and possibly the last hurrah for Schlager in the contest!?! It was widely tipped to battle Anna Vissi for the win but obviously they both lost out to Lordi and Dima Bilan amongst others...what a shame considering it's so so far superior! Topped my personal chart in March 2006 as Evighet, hung around the top five for a few weeks and bounced back to the top when the English version, Invincible surfaced - both are incredible pop songs  Salem Al Fakir's quirky indie/pop Keep On Walking was last year's runner up and another in a long line of 'songs that would have been more worthy Eurovision entries than Anna Bergendahl'. An almost hypnotic intro giving way to a brilliant chorus, the melody and production were spot on with this song, and it (and Backseat which was out at the same time) turned me from a casual Salem fan into a full on loon. Such a great shame that it fell at the final hurdle but at least the contest won him a barrage of new fans. Catwoman Perrelli made a triumphant return to Melodifestivalen 2008, after nine years of absence from the competition, which she of course won in 1999 - and then went on to win Eurovision. The stars were not aligned for her in 2008 though where juries saved her from the embarrassment of going out in the semis, and she then performed rather poorly in the final. Indeed she perhaps shouldn't have even made Eurovision anyway, seeing as 'the hero's champion' Sanna polled over 50,000 more televotes than her rival. But the juries wanted the schlager and what better a schlager song to send! My defining anthem of 2008 (along with Love Song, No Air and Hold On Be Strong) - it also almost single handedly gave me a concept for my final year uni dissertation - so somebody loves her, even if the masses didn't! And #1? Was there ever any doubt? It is of course the incredible pop troup Alcazar. Making their third MF appearance, it seemed unlikely that they'd manage to top Alcastar but Stay The Night managed to top not only that but just about every other song released in 2009 (shame about pesky Agnes and that unexpected hit of hers!). The happiest band in pop's self composition has it all - perfect boy/girl harmonies, a fantastic chorus, INCREDIBLE production including a dance breakdown (which was even better/longer in the performance version) and of course a brilliant key change/coupled with continuing harmonies and some of the most brilliantly camp lyrics ever written. Of course it sadly only came 5th in the contest but they gave it their all - and I really don't think they'll ever manage to top this song - perfection.
March 4, 201114 yr 5. Caroline Af Ugglas - Snälla Snälla (2009 - 2nd) 3. Salem Al Fakir - Keep On Walking (2010 - 2nd) You ain't no honourable guest to my house no mo'. Disgraceful.
March 4, 201114 yr Caroline Af Ugglas! My favorite song from her is "Jag är för feg" Gb6l4A4vZWQ
March 4, 201114 yr 30. Friends - The One That You Need (2002 - 8th) After the amazing Listen To Your Heartbeat, I've always found this song a bit plain. It's very S Club 7! 24. The Ark - The Worrying Kind (2007 - 1st) This really shouldn't have won in 2007, imo. There were a plethora of songs I much preferred 22. Sibel - That Is Where I'll Go (2008 - 7th) A very nice ballad! I was pleased she managed to make the final as I was sure Ola would qualify! 20. Jenny Silver - Something In Your Eyes (2011 - TBC) Great tune! A travesty it's up against so much competition in her half of the AC. Fingers crossed she'll have an album out soon. 19. Anna Bergendahl - This Is My Life (2010 - 1st) Loved this at the time, but it's worn on my slightly now. It still should have made the final though 17. Emilia - You're My World (2009 - 9th) This also sounds like an S Club 7 song  . It's grown on me loads since the contest, at the time I wasn't overly fussed about it 13. Sanna Nielsen - I'm In Love (2011 - TBC) She could well be my favourite in the final depending on the AC results! Let's hope she's not the bridesmaid this year! I wonder if she'll bother entering again if she fails this time? 12. Sanna Nielsen - Empty Room (2008 - 2nd) Should definitely have won! 9. Timoteij - Kom (2010 - 5th) I'm so looking forward to hearing the English version! 5. Caroline Af Ugglas - Snälla Snälla (2009 - 2nd) Like Emilia, this has grown on me a lot too. I see what you mean, but I do like it a lot! 22. It is indeed gorgeous, she has a very powerful voice - I hear she was born/raised (can't remember which) in Macedonia, they could do worse than poach her for ESC! 20. I know, I wish it was in the other half of the draw! Same with all of those in her half though  17. Hmm, I can see what you mean here too actually, it's very retro! 13. I'd be surprised if she wasn't my favourite in the final, unless one of the AC victors tremendously grows on me after watching it tomorrow. 12/2. I do agree, mainly because I think the winner of the public vote SHOULD win, but I do prefer Hero as you can see  Empty Room peaked at #3 in my chart, Hero had 4 weeks at #1! 9. Same here! Have you ordered the boxset yet, mine hasn't been dispatched yet, or even processed - and the Sanna album's in the same delivery :( 5. Really? :o Admittedly it only properly clicked with me at the AC stage after I'd initially dismissed her as a crazy woman (which she is!). But the extra 24 airings of it on AC really helped it to stick in my head :kink: And she was flawless in the final. 4. I can't disagree with that, it's so emphatic! 1. Great to see we have the same #1! In fact that's a fantastic top 50 overall, loads of similarities to mine - hopefully a lot of them will make it onto the '100 classics' CD's, and that they have a good flow! I've bolded the ones that I considered for my top 50 but narrowly missed out. Damn, I think I forgot about The Attic actually  Great dance song! Interesting that we have a few songs in the exact same position - Hope & Glory for example

I'm leaning towards just getting hold of the demo disc somehow and then turning my top 50 into a compilation. Will save on the pounds, and on the filler tracks I don't like! Plus I have all the MF compilations apart from 2002 already so there'll only be about 5 or so tracks that I'm missing. 05 - It was all the Snalla, Snalla bits that put me off it initially, plus I thought it was a Duffy ripoff :heehee: . I now realise that it's much better than most of Duffy's output. I had forgotten how good The Arrival was also until listening back yesterday. It was pretty dire live, but the studio version is sublime!

It's a better purchase for me I think seeing as I'm missing loads of the compilations, plus if I decide that I don't want to keep it (as if I would!), I'm sure I could sell it on eBay for pretty much what I end up paying for it! 5. Duffy, really? :o I can't say I ever would have thought of comparing the two! Most of Duffy's output is terrible save for Warwick Avenue and Mercy, although that has been horribly overplayed now :drama: I could very much have imagined The Arrival being a hit in the UK at the time actually, Stonebridge with Therese managed a couple of top ten hits here at least!

Rockferry remains my favourite Duffy song. I definitely agree there! I think had they got a release in the UK, all of the following could have been hits here: E-Type - Paradise Marie Lindberg - Trying To Recall The Attic - The Arrival Sanna Nielsen - Empty Room Alcazar - Stay The Night Agnes - Love Love Love

I loved Mojot Svet, and her 2002 entry too. Shame their 2006 entry couldn't quite give them that first top ten... 9. Exactly, definitely something to hold onto and store - well, if they ever send it out :/ 5. I agree, and more control of her vocals  Rockferry's very nice actually, I forgot about that one. Her first three singles made her look like she had massive longterm potential! I'd agree on most of those, not sure about Marie, the production still sounded 'slightly' too amateurish I think, but it could have been polished up a bit. Love Love Love should really have followed Release Me in my eyes, the MF version too, not the underwhelming re-work that we got on the UK version of the album. E-Type definitely could have had a hit with that in 2004, same sort of time that Special D was smashing with similar songs. And Stay The Night was clearly the anthem that never was in the UK :drama: It got SUCH a good reception from customers when I used to hammer it at work!

Yes I did like that one, I was confusing it with the Bosnian entry that year. The MF version of Love Love Love is far superior, I frequently put that on my compilation CDs in work  . I put Alcazar on one of my CDs in work, but I think it was a sunday when I played that and hardly anyone came in that day :( .

I'm not entirely sure that the triumphant schlager finish would have worked for the UK but I'd have left it in anyway :heehee: That's a shame :( I used to play it every day, twice at least - I had to lighten up working full time at a supermarket somehow :heehee:
