Spain: Oh I DO like this. It's very perky and cheery, if a bit generic for Spain (but do I detect slight IRISH tones to it?!). It's better than anything they've sent in the last eight years, possibly Soraya aside, but then that doesn't say much. In any case, it can have an 8/10 for now.

Somewhat catchy. Typical spanish entry. And I TOO HEAR IRISH NOTES :o

 

Definitely going to grow on me when a HQ version leaks and when i see the video.

I instantly found it charming but it's dropped down the pack a bit for me as new songs have emerged, its pleasantly Spanish and at least stays true to their culture. 8/10

Well I suppose this gives me time to review the Spanish song. When I first heard this I thought it was godawful, mainly because the girl singing it is not only completely mismatched to the song, but her voice is just terrible. Like fingernails down a blackboard. Now that the song has been polished up a bit it is actually quite charming, in the same way Portugal's 2009 entry was. So it is growing on me, and I'll give it a 6/10, but I will never get used to her voice.

For example, there are SO MANY songs that were translated into english after previously being sung in the native language or were in english from the start. This is pretty much disappointing for me. The least they could do is let their song be as it was, sung in the native language, even though it may be not really 'representing' the country (Croatia, Hungary, Netherlands).

I don't agree that the 'easiest way' is just avoiding mainstream Western pop. Haba Haba is pretty much Waka Waka 0.5 (the half baked version), and obviously inspired by Jessy Matador's entry too so not exactly hugely original - and surely the easiest way to try to get a hit is to emulate Europe's biggest selling single of the previous year :o And Serbia's entry is 2008 mainstream, but a bit late onto the bandwagon now. The only countries really pushing boundaries this year I think are France and maybe Germany - it's nice to have such a quirky minimalist pop song in the competition. But if Lena's pushing boundaries then so was Cheryl Cole by releasing 3 Words as a single!

 

In my opinon, whilst it's nice for countries to show their cultural identity, it doesn't disappoint me when they don't. I mean the UK's cultural identity these days is chavvy rap and 'grime', and I'd HATE for that to turn up in Eurovision to represent us, just so that the rest of Europe know that it's 'our sound'! A lot of countries listen to, buy and chart mainstream pop and that's what the contest has always been about - it gets a bit worldy and ethnic sometimes, which I often enjoy and approve of, but at the heart of it, I watch it because it's mainly a pop contest.

 

As for the language thing, I'm assuming that everybody's here to try and win, and short of a strong song + hype + different image + major diaspora (i.e. Serbia 2007), some random foreign language song like The Netherlands, Croatia and Hungary would never command the sorts of votes needed from across Europe to do any damage. Perhaps if the few foreign songs that were entered every year weren't languishing at the bottom of the semis, other countries would be more inclined to keep their entries in their native language.

Diva was performed in Hebrew in 1998 although there was an English version available, and released. I think the UK were the only country not to vote for Marija (could be wrong), although the song DEFINITELY went top 100 on our iTunes for a while after the contest, which was a huge achievement for a Serbian language ballad in a country that never accepts foreign language songs!

Oh yeah forgot Diva <3 Still it's pretty much rare for a foreign language song to win :(

I don't dislike it like everyone else seems to, it's at the very top of my 'average' category, sailing quite close to good. She seems like she'd be more suited to one of Andrew Lloyd Webbers 'search for a West End star' shows though, right down to her face and mannerisms :lol: 6/10

Lithuania's song is very pleasent to listen to, it might grow on me more as the weeks go by. For now I'll give it a 6/10
