As his family is rounded up to be shipped off to the Nazi labor camps, he escapes deportation and eludes capture by living in the ruins of Warsaw." u_jE7-6Uv7E Obviously this needs no introduction (seeing how it was released almost a decade ago) but it's definitely one of my favourites. I couldn't find an existing thread and was interested in hearing everyones opinions on the film, also those who haven't seen it definitely should. I've watched it twice this weekend after somehow forgetting about it's existence. Ridiculously heartbreaking (the scene with the child beneath the ghetto wall always gets me) but so well executed. Adrien Brody's performance is brilliant and he showed so much promise as an actor... Sadly, he hasn't made a film of this quality since. One hit wonder, if you will. Anyone else love this film? March 20, 201114 yr It is trult brilliant. The bit that really gets me in the film is when the the Nazis invade the house of the Jewish family, and they expect them all to stand. Of course one if in a wheelchair and then throw him out his wheelchair to his death, and then proceed to slaughter the rest of the family as they helplessly run away. I think it is one of those films that everyone should watch. It's ridiculously brilliant, and extemely cultured at the same time. Obviously its not to everybody's tastes, but it just does reinforce on people how bad the Nazis were, and why it is ridiculously STUPID to even believe that the concentration camps didn't even exist...
March 20, 201114 yr Yeah it's one of my favourite films ever, so powerful. I haven't seen it in a long time though, I've got it on VHS so I might give it a watch later. I remember I first saw it in R.E. and everyone laughed at the man getting pushed out of his wheelchair :/. Although they were mostly morons.

They pretty much decided RE was a doss subject and not worth their time before even attending. Idiots.
March 20, 201114 yr I always feel incredibly guilty about enjoying Polanski films and he should be sent down but he is one of the greatest living directors and I don't think anyone else could have made this film and put so much personal suffering into it whilst retaining the beauty that the film contains.

I'm of a similar mind ... but so many of his films I'd count amongst my favourites. This particular film though was just sublime. My favourite moment was when Brody's character was trying to open the tin of gherkins ... and it rolled under the feet of the German officer (who helped him survive the final weeks.) A brilliant film. Kath
May 6, 201114 yr I've just watched this and it was pretty good. Not one of my favourites but like rooney said it definitely reinforces how bad the nazi's were. There were so many times I just wanted to jump in the screen and kick their faces in. I usually cry really easily at films even when they're not even supposed to be sad but this one didn't really move me at all. I felt really bad especially during the wheelchair part and at the end where the officer who helped adrien brody's character couldn't get out but I think I'm just so used to these kinds of themes in films now that I'm kinda used it it maybe? Plus I felt it was just way too long in places and found myself actually hoping for a bit of death to liven it up a bit. Adrien brody definitely deserved that oscar though!
