March 21, 201114 yr Hey, In English we've been given Romeo & Juliet to do, I thought it was brilliant the book and the movie What are Buzzjacks opinion of Shakespear's greatest drama. My son's doing Romeo & Juliet too in English (he likes it). I've got to be honest - I've read it but the only production I've seen of it is the BBC one years ago where Alan Rickman played the part of Tybalt. I'm not a great fan I'm afraid. When it comes to Shakespear - I find the only ones I can get into are the ones that feature lots of war-mongering. Maybe with Shakespear its a case of being drawn to the one you were first introduced to - and for me - when we were at school it was Henry 1V, Part 1 (at the time I could recite whole passages from that one!) Mind you - I went to see Hamlet at St George's Hall in 1992 (when Alan Rickman was in a touring production of it) and I loved that - but not sure how much of it was down to being blown away by Alan Rickman and by Geraldine McEwan who was playing his mother. March 21, 201114 yr Avoid William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (the 1996 movie featuring the insufferable Claire Danes) like the PLAGUE. Seriously. It's laughable.

That got brilliant reviews but I think I'd rather take your summation of it. It doesn't look my kind of cup of tea - no matter how updated they make it. I can't even stand West Side Story version. That is the one that Jark is referring to. You should watch West Side Story though - its the telling of the same story but in New York set to music. Kath
March 22, 201114 yr The film of Romeo and Juliet is suprisingly fantastic. I did a similar thing two years ago that you were studying when i did english. It helped me personally through the movie. But i am a visual learner anyway.
March 25, 201114 yr We did Hamlet last year for our A Levels, but looked into more Shakespeare after that and read Romeo and Juliet. It was good, you can tell that the influence in Shakespeare's writing in may modern literature.
