Now he’s back with a whole lot of new challenges

He was spotted in India and the Far East... There were sightings of him in Russia and Cuba...He was reported to have locked himself in Hollywood’s top recording studios for two months working on material for a new album...

Now suddenly 32-year-old UK singing star Will Young is back on the scene...in a big way. A new album, Echoes, has just been released, to be followed by a TV special and an autumn tour.

“I took a lot of time off to go travelling and to get away from all that celebrity stuff,” Will says. “Now I’ve recharged my batteries and I’m back to make up for lost time!”

And that means signing a new three-album record deal said to be worth $50 million, and negotiating for the lead in a movie. “I want to do more acting,” Will says. “I’d love to be in Downton Abbey!”

Talking about his new album — his fifth — Will says: “I spent an awfully long time putting it together. I am really proud of it.”

It was in February 2002 that the University of Exeter graduate burst into the headlines by winning the first UK Pop Idol TV contest. His first single, Anything Is Possible, became the fastest-selling debut disc in pop history.

But if cynics expected Will to be a one-hit wonder, they were mistaken. His albums and singles have sold over 10 million copies and he has a growing reputation as an actor. “Pop singers don’t usually make good actors but I knew I could do it,” Will says.

But Will has no intention of giving up singing. Says legendary record producer Pete Waterman, the judge who backed Will when he reached the finals of TV’s Pop Idol contest: “I knew he had the makings of a star but I never thought he would be this big. I could really see Will as another Sinatra in future years. He’s got everything it takes.

“Will has got better both as a singer and a personality. The sky really is the limit for him now.”

Will, who before his astonishing breakthrough, expected to take up a career in business management, remembers that he nearly didn’t fill in the Pop Idol entry form after seeing it in a national newspaper.

“I honestly didn’t think I had a hope of even getting into the last 1,000,” he says. “But the paper stayed on the table and in the end I grabbed a pen, filled it in and sent it off.

Since then he has sung for the Queen, given a private concert for Prince Charles, starred in the Royal Variety performance, made sell-out nation-wide tours, headlined at Glastonbury and had all his records in the top five of the charts.

“I know money changes you as a person but I’m not going down that road,” says Will. “I’m surrounded by a brilliant family and group of friends. Being a millionaire will never change the way I am to these people.”

In fact friends say that being a multi-millionaire hasn’t made much difference to the man who confesses he’s ‘useless with money’.

He still drives a modest car and lives in a one-bedroomed flat in Chelsea when he isn’t at his parents’ country home in Berkshire.

“I suppose I’ll have to buy a house eventually, but at the moment my headquarters is at my parents’ house and I have no plans to move away from home. I’m too comfortable there!”

But he has no intention of becoming a stereotype pop star. “My new album is about identity, doing what I want to do instead of what other people want,”he says. “Last year I felt I’d lost that a lot. I wasn’t particularly happy and felt I’d lost my way.

“That was why I decided to get away from everything and go travelling and chilling out. I got away from music and was in a completely new world.

After nearly ten years of superstardom, Will is trying to lead as normal a life as possible. “I like being with people who are honest with me — I certainly try not to behave like a diva!”

He is now regularly exercising at the gym but he can no longer run or jog in public — “When I tried it there were about a hundred girls running after me. I thought I might be arrested for disturbing the peace!” he smiles.

“Always being in the limelight takes some getting used to. But I suppose it’s a small price to pay for having all your wildest dreams come true...”

Glad to hear Echoes lived up to expectations.

Hope we get some more sales info this week.

Up to last week Echoes had sold 132,247 & Jealousy around 111,000.

Wasn't a big fan of his latest album but this one got me excited about Will again. Thankfully I could order it via cd-wow. Love the 'chilly' vibe about it. Jealousy, Runaway and Silent valentine are my fav's atm
