March 29, 201114 yr The German charts were FAR better than the UK charts in 2010 but I feel the complete opposite this year. Born This Way a #1, flops for fantastic songs, only #6 for J.Lo. And the worst examples of US rap/urban at the top end of the charts (I mean I like the genre a lot but that Flo Rida song is weak). Where are the Euro hits!?! The saving grace is that they're paying attention to Caro Emerald's A Night Like This :wub:

(Milk & Sugar aside but it's not as good as last year's dance hits). Still only #7 on iTunes, she really needs to pick up some pace :( But I'll take Adele, Nicole Scherzinger, J.Lo, Ke$ha, Rihanna feat Drake and Jessie J/B.o.B. at #1 over that insane run for Israel and Born This Way soon after. All charts have their ups and downs but I'm strangely liking the UK charts (especially the #1's) at the moment, the best state they've been in since 2007 for me personally where I was obsessed with so many #1's (Mika, Take That, Timbaland/Nelly/Justin, Shakira/Beyonce, Robyn, Leona Lewis, Sugababes, Kanye and Rihanna mainly)

But last year there were times that I'd look at the German charts and wish I lived there, and this year I can honestly say that this is nowhere near the case at all. Obviously the UK charts are far from perfect, and incredibly samey but it's suddenly got a whole lot better at the top. Gone are the forgettable one week wonder #1's that dominated last year and back are the songs that actually deserve to be #1, and selling huge amounts of copies in the process to justify getting there. I mean 65k for J.Lo in two days is insane, those sales would suggest that it's the new Believe or something, in terms of a sizeable comeback hit. And Adele/Jessie have definitely justified their long stays in the top two, both heading towards a million at some point by the looks of it. I thought it was great, so many of my own personal chart #1's getting to the top of the UK chart too, I guess it's starting to happen again recently (Rihanna/Drake, Adele, J.Lo), my chart couldn't be further away from the official chart during the majority of 2010 :lol:

Even then, songs seemed more omnipresent and everywhere on the music scene then. Still unashamedly love "The Ketchup Song". :heart: Don't think it would be a UK hit in today's standards though. That was definitely a song of the physical era. :P Speaking of Shakira, what a shame "Objection" flopped everywhere except France and Australia. :( I actually prefer it to the first two singles.

March 29, 201114 yr I think last years #1s are way overrated. I hate "Satellites" and dont care for "Wavin' Flag" or "Over The Rainbow" :lol: They were a mixed batch, like nearly every year :) Still euro hits normally only arrive nearer the Summertime, so we'll see The last year I really liked for #1s was 2002 with Shakira, Scooter, Mad'House, No Angels, Tiziano Ferro, Nelly and Las Ketchup :lol: Although Eminem and Herbert Gronemeyer ruined that Summer Satellite, Alors On Danse and Waka Waka were amazing #1's for me, to think that they only got top 30 in the UK is shameful. Same with Keri Hilson I guess, and that only got top 40 :drama: It's definitely too early to judge the whole year on 3 months, but the German charts seem very bland to me right now - at the top especially, outside the top 10 they're pretty great actually. Whereas the UK is the other way round, great in the top 5, more boring below. I loved 2002 as well, but there were SO many Eurodance covers of 80's pop songs - although I shamefully loved each and every one of them :lol: But yeah, the UK charts were hindered by Will and Gareth and all of the flop idols, plus the Cheeky Girls/One True Voice at the latter end of the year :(

Still, you can see how much I was loving the dance music that year. And Shakira, naturally. Plus I heard the ATC song in 2000 but got massively into it when it got a UK release, hence its appearance here. A few of these I heard first in 2001 as well, Flip & Fill for example, and Set You Free which I loved so much that it carried over another year :lol:
March 29, 201114 yr Author I'm sure Comme Si De Rein will agree was a fabulous year for latin-pop in case you're a fan of the genre. Don't you agree? Rich, it seems we were into the same things back then! Lol. Although I was definitely enjoying R&B a bit more
March 29, 201114 yr It was - Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, and Paulina Rubio definitely brought it big that year. "Don't Say Goodbye" should have been huge but it was seen as too much of a Kylie knockoff everywhere. 2002 I would say is the last real "nostalgic" year for music. 2003-2004 I would never want to go back too... too much urban. :puke2: Edited March 29, 201114 yr by Comme si de rein
March 29, 201114 yr Author I also enjoyed Paulina's other 2 singles "The One You Love" and "Baila Casanova" :wub: Also Chayanne - Torero, Loona - Viva El Amor, David Bisbal - Ave Maria, David Civera "Que La Detengan", Shalim "Nadie Como Tu", Patricia Manterola "Que El Ritmo No Pare/The Rhythm" :D 2003 was the rise of reggaeton... It was generally a crap year, but I did enjoy the R&B scene back then, probably the only genre to thrive.
