When thinking about casting the part of an elderly spinster from a small English village who solves crimes in her spare time, Jennifer Garner is not the first name that one would expect to come to mind.

But the glamorous 38-year-old Hollywood actress has just been announced to star in a Disney reboot about the much-loved heroine of Agatha Christie's novels.

The actress, best known for her roles as the catsuited superhero Elektra and in a slew of fluffy romantic comedies.

Jane Marple, the amateur sleuth from St. Mary Mead, is depicted as an elderly spinster, most famously by Margaret Rutherford in the 1960s film versions of Agatha Christie's 12 crime novels.

Angela Lansbury also played the iconic character in the 1980 film The Mirror Crack'd, while Joan Hickson took on the role for the BBC television movies.

Novelist Christie based the character on her own grandmother, recordings of the author discovered in 2008 revealed.

Miss Marple first appeared in print in 1927 in a story published in The Royal Magazine. The first novel based on the crime solver the Murder At The Vicarage in 1930, followed by 11 more novels.

Disney has hired Twin Peaks writer Mark Frost to transform the classic story for an American contemporary adaptation.

Garner, who shot to fame in 2001 in TV series Alias, recently starred in another remake, Arthur, with Russell Brand and Helen Mirren.

She will be seen in comedy Butter alongside Hugh Jackman, House actress Olivia Wilde and Twilight star Ashley Greene next year, and is currently filming fantasy The Odd Life Of Timothy Green with Dianne West and Joel Edgerton.

Lots of contriversy over this :o

Personally, I think this could be good, sure Miss Marple is meant to be an old busy body but this could introduce younger people to the classic novels.

Jennifer is a great actress and I think she could be good.

Oh, come ON FFS!!!!!

This really is just taking the pish now... First, Jennifer Garner is American..... Secondly, she's 38... Thirdly, SHE'S AMERICAN...... Well, it's such an important point it was worth bringing up twice...... <_<

The raping ITV did with "Marple" was bad enough, but this is just taking things too far....

So because she's American, she can't play a British character?

But she's NOT playing a 'British' character - that's the whole point - the whole kaboodle's being relocated to America... Miss Marple will now be an American.... in America?! This is wrong wrong wrong on EVERY level.

Oh right. Why on Earth is this being made then? I just thought they were doing a version of when Miss Marple was younger, not completely changing it. -_-

Bit mixed on this. Mainly because i don't find Jennifer Garner a "great actress". She was fantastic in Alias but since furthering her film career, i have found her dull and at times rather wooden. However it is good they are making Miss Marple young. I mean, why not see Miss Marple before she was an old lady.

Plus, i don't think her nationality is really a problem.

Renee Zelwegger - Bridget Jones

Angelina Jolie - Lara Croft

Meryl Streep - Margaret Thatcher

Just examples of well known american actresses playing rather well known British people or characters. Two of them pulled it off very well. I am sure Meryl will too.

I'd be reasonably confident in the idea if she was playing a Brit (although we're not exactly lacking decent British actresses) but it's mad to relocate the whole thing over to the US.

As with most people here, there is nothing wrong with Jennifer playing Marple. I just fear what they will do to the stories themselves.

They would have to be edited slightly with a younger Marple but I don't want them changed beyond all recognition

Not including the awful Arthur remake this summer it does seems Garner is branching out with her career (for the first time in years, probably thanks to renewed interest in Mr Affleck) but this doesn't seem like the best choice. Agreeing with most of the posts in the thread thus far and the idea is definitely somewhat farfetched. I'm not going to write it off until I find out who the director attached is, although I'm perhaps slightly biased because I loved Alias and she is obviously gorgeous.

I cannot believe in ten years the only decent films she's been in are Juno and Catch Me If You Can (blink and you'll miss her).

What about Elektra? :kink:

I loved her in that.

The film that spent more time arranging fruit than anything else...

Angelina Jolie - Lara Croft

I fucking love Angelina's British accent. It's even more seductive than her usual tone of voice. It's on particularly good form in (the amazing) Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow.

What I wanna know is what they are doing? If Disney is involved then it could be anything.

Oh noes :drama: :(

I guess we will have to wait and see what crap they poop out for this.

Betty White. :manson:

Judi Dench if anything, but they're clearly doing something different.

Nah, Helen Mirren I'd say.
