May 11, 201114 yr Well done to her! Rolling In The Deep is definitely going to go down as one of those classics that never made #1 in the UK, it's always strange to see a UK artist take a song to greater success in the US than in their home country, I remember thinking the same about Natasha Bedingfield's Unwritten - a multi million seller and huge hit on radio and culturally there yet here it was a pretty quickly forgotten insignificant top ten hit that I always felt like I loved and nobody else did - until it's US success
May 11, 201114 yr Wow! :o Incredible!!! :D And I find it hilarious that when Adele first released in the US, everybody was like "Oh, she won't do well. US radio refuse to play good music. She's actually talented, so nobody will listen to her. Americans only generic urban crap". Now I get to say "I told you so".

May 11, 201114 yr  Amazing for ADELE, she is much more talented than Leona Lewis (the last female Briton to get a US number one). RITD being number one is very deserved :D
May 11, 201114 yr THIS. It's not 2003 anymore! Quite. Now the UK buys the generic urban American crap so that the US don't have to :D When there's more British pop hanging around the US top 20 than the UK top 20 and more US urban in the UK top 20 than in the US top 20, you know something's gone dreadfully wrong :drama:

RITD I can't get enough of though  Edit: Yeah that Rich :nocheer:
May 11, 201114 yr Excellent news, RITD remains her best song for me so it's great to see it at #1 in the US. I'm really chuffed for her and also that a song like that can be so popular there.

RITD I can't get enough of though  Edit: Yeah that Rich :nocheer: Glad you agree  I still can't get into 19 really, and maintain that it's a quite patchy debut. The singles and a couple of other tracks are great (My Same being one of them) but the rest is a real borefest for me. 21 is perfect though
May 11, 201114 yr A-MAZING! I am so chuffed for Adele and a little jealous that RITD could get to #1 in the US not here.
May 11, 201114 yr I hear on the grapevine that she's actually more chuffed about FINALLY reaching #1 on the Jester chart. U.S.WHO?
May 11, 201114 yr I hear on the grapevine that she's actually more chuffed about FINALLY reaching #1 on the Jester chart. U.S.WHO? HA! Of course she is!
May 11, 201114 yr Congratulations to her, that is a really brilliant achievement :D Should easily get at least one more week there with the sales boost Glee will have given it. Simply bizarre it's got to #1 in the USA but not in the UK. Of course Down did the same but that had such an American sound it may as well have been American. Aside from Down the last US-but-not-UK-#1 by a British artist was, as far as I can tell, 'Kiss From A Rose' by Seal in 1995 :o
May 11, 201114 yr Pfft!!! 'Rolling In The Deep' spent two weeks at #1 in the ** Hitstastic Top 40 Singles ** chart. There isn't a higher accolade than this. :D ...but seriously, there really isn't. :D Anyways, I'm really happy for Adele as she has taken the whole entire world by storm. With such a strong album as '21', all the success is thoroughly deserved. GO ADELE!!! :w00t: I've said it before and I'll (in typical Hits style) say it again. Downloads have been a much needed breath of fresh air to the US charts. I dread to think what the US #1 hits would've been like had download sales never been included. -_-
May 11, 201114 yr Quite. When songs like Nero and Katy B can go top 10 in the US, that will be the day I'll start preferring the Hot 100, perhaps. We are far more open musically than the US will ever be. I don't think the UK chart is that bad at the moment anyway. I often wonder - would people still be complaining about our chart if they were looking in as an outsider from, let's say, France or something, rather than following it so closely? I think some people here hold our chart up to an unbelievably high standard (not surprising as it used to be fantastic) and are therefore more easily unsatisfied. Compare that to another country's chart where you often don't have many expectations - specifically the US which, as somebody already said, has often been seen as a chart full of urban songs. It is funny though as I often see comments from Americans on things like YouTube saying how much better our chart is  Oh, and congratulations to Adele! Anyone else think she has the potential to actually have a real long-running career of hits in the US, rather than quickly fade like so many other British acts have done over the years? I guess we'll see but in the short-term I wouldn't be surprised if Someone Like You also did very well over there...

I guess we'll see but in the short-term I wouldn't be surprised if Someone Like You also did very well over there... I still prefer the UK charts overall to the US charts, mainly because we don't let airplay dictate ours in any way. But 6 or 7 years ago I would have laughed in the face of somebody telling me that one day the US charts would actually show some variety and the UK charts wouldn't. It's a shame to see it decline so quickly - no reflection on the actual songs IN the chart, I pretty much like everything in the current UK top 40 to some extent, but it's all very samey recently and the chart show is definitely more of a chore to listen to when everything seems to use the same beats/two producers  But indeed the UK charts are far more open still, with the potential of throwing up quirky surprise hits. I still like them a lot, but without wishing to sound like I'm wearing rose coloured glasses, I'm sure the variety was much more vast when I was listening in the late 90s - almost all genres could chart highly back then.
May 11, 201114 yr I really dont get the appeal of RITD, but congrats to her. I can see why SLY was massive in the UK though
May 11, 201114 yr I can't wait to hear 'Set Fire To The Rain' on the radio. She needs to release that and 'Rumor Has It'.
May 11, 201114 yr Yeah the UK chart is definitely still better, better variety and is more accommodating to new acts and genres. Although I will point out that if you replaced dance with country, the UK chart would probably look pretty similar to the Hot 100. Lately, both charts are sorely lacking rock and R&B acts...
May 11, 201114 yr :yahoo:   :w00t:  :D :P :) B) :cheer: KNEW IT WOULD MAKE IT! So happy such a great anthem has made it to #1! Adele is doing it all, breaking records and setting the charts alight all over the place :dancing:
