Release Date: 27th May (US) ~ Release pushed back in the UK.

Starring: Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, Sean Penn, Fiona Shaw, Crystal Mantecon, Tamara Jolaine, Joanna Going, Jackson Hurst

Plot:

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as "Badlands", "Days of Heaven" and "The Thin Red Line", "The Tree of Life" is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950's. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son, Jack, through the innocence of childhood to his disillusioned adult years as he tries to reconcile a complicated relationship with his father (Brad Pitt). Jack (played as an adult by Sean Penn) finds himself a lost soul in the modern world, seeking answers to the origins and meaning of life while questioning the existence of faith. Through Malick's signature imagery, we see how both brute nature and spiritual grace shape not only our lives as individuals and families, but all life.

It got strong reactions at Cannes, with some people booing and hissing and others appluading, but with cosmic sequences apparantly lasting 15 minutes without a human face to be seen, it's going to have that effect. But this is Terrence Malick, so you know it's going to look f***ing beautiful, and from the trailer it seems to me to have the most stunning shots he's done. I am so pumped for this, especially as the theme, ideas and story really resonates with me at the moment.

Really looking forward to this too, the artwork I've seen so far is brilliant and so is the trailer. It already screams Academy Awards

It doesn't seem Oscar bait to me, cinematography and possibly Director aside, I can't see it being nominated; especially given its summer release date in America. It's early days yet though.

Also, here is another fantastic poster.

EDIT: Funnily enough, I just saw this on tumblr

looks artistically magnificant.

definatly a film for people with a large interest in films, rather than the casual viewer.

Just been to see this and I still don't really know how I feel about it. Visually it was absolutely incredible and I've never seen anything like it but the actual plot confused the hell of me and every time I thought I'd got it sussed out something else bizarre would happen. I got the general gist of it but some parts of it are still playing on my mind.

The first 30 minutes was almost like watching an episode of Planet Earth. I can definitely see the comparisons to 2001: A Space Odyssey. The CGI Dinosaurs were a bit dodgy though!

Also I'm not too sure about the Oscars now. I can see why Cannes loved it because all the other Palm d'Or winners that I've seen are more about making the audience think about the subject matter rather than it necessarily being entertaining but I just can't imagine it being appreciated by the Oscars because it just seems so out there but you never know. It'll at least get nominations for Cinematography, Director & Music though I'm sure.

After having a night to think about it I'm in love. I'm definitely gonna go see it again before it leaves the cinema's cos I wanna watch it knowing how it ends and the visuals on such a large screen were incredible  I can't get it off my mind which like I said is kinda why I think it won the Palme d'Or in the end

I doubt I will be able to see this during its cinema run, the closet screen to me is the Odeon in Convent Garden, and I have no money. Bummer.

As for the Oscars, this is getting a lot of attention from the Hollywood filmmaking elite, and considering they are the ones who will be voting, I can see this being one of the frontrunners. I guess it helps having Brad Pitt's influence as producer.

:(

I really do hope this is a frontrunner or just being nominated would be nice. I still can't stop thinking about it and it just seems to get better in my head as I re-evaluate it all.

AWFUL

Without a doubt the worst film I have ever had to endure at the cinema.

Utter piece of shit. Terrible.

Thank you for that.

I for one loved it. It's absolutely stunning, thought-provoking and the artistry behind every scene can only be applauded. Potentially Malick's best yet? His opus if you will. The negative reviews I've read so far seem to be rather judgemental about anything remotely artistic (pretentious and whatnot, such rubbish). I'm sure this will be similar to The Kids are All Right at the Oscars - nominated but somewhat forgotten about by the time award season is in full swing. I'm sure both would have done better had they been released in December.

But surely this is more of a landmark film, so has less chance of being forgotten than The Kids are All Right? And Brad Piit will make sure to run a good campaign and will be hitting the circuit hard, whereas I don't think that happened for TKAAR, I know Annette Benning didn't work the circuit anyway.

I want to see this so bad.

I thought it was Ok. I liked the evolutionary scenes and the gorgeous accompaniment music. I barely cared at all for the relationship between Brad Pitt and his kids.

I quite liked 'heaven' on the beach

and I enjoyed the relief of seeing the end credits.

It will be represented at the Oscars, but I don't think it will win a great deal - best editing perhaps and a great shout for best cinematography.

Hey u have shared great trailers for the movie..

Mesmerizing. I've watched this yesterday with 2 friends (both of them found it painfully slow and dull) and it was stunning. I think it could have worked even better without any dialogue or just a little, just with those magnificent scenes. Picture, cinematography, music were all great.

The only thing in the plot that i didn't find quite necessary for its longevity was when the oldest boy started to "react" and getting kinda mad etc. At some point i found it leading the whole film in another direction.

First half and the end were magical.

I bought the BluRay in the amazon sale.... and I have to say that I, too, think it is a masterpiece. Yes, it's pretentious and baffling at times, and it did seem a bit muddled itself as to what the film was actually trying to say.... but... visually, I thought it was stunning. In fact, only the jaw-droppingly beautiful Baraka comes anywhere close in the cinematography stakes.

A must-see for any fan of the art of cinema.

I think that "Tree Of Life" was the most boring film in 2011!! I watched it along with my two best friends and we got bored..
