I can understand why some people might find Hey Ya! overrated, but you have to understand it sounded unbelievably fresh and different when it came out back in 2003, at a time of faceless rappers, manufactured pop, reggae-lite and every popstar jumping over their feet to work with The Neptunes :lol:. Things were a little on the bland side, particularly on the Hot 100, so when this bonkers, hook-filled, genre-bending tune came around it was very much welcome, I think. And it united (almost) EVERYONE - young, old, pop fans, hip hop fans, rock fans, etc. Its far-reaching appeal was simply incredible to be honest. It's just a shame its sales were so spread out over many months that it didn't get to #1 here in the UK :angry:

 

Plus, personally speaking, when done well - funk music is amazing, so any funk influence in a modern song gets a thumbs up from me.

I agree here. 'Hey Ya!' is timeless. The best thing I've ever seen written about it is on Pitchfork, that it sounded like everything on the radio but nothing you'd ever heard before. The song defines pop perfection and is definitely one of my top 10 songs of the previous decade.
