Someone asked for a topic like this to be made so I made it. :D

Personally going to null vote this as I've only really followed music since 2009.

I had to null-vote as well, since I only started to follow music again around 2003.

Also, there are a number of posters here who will be too young to remember the early 2000's, so there might be an inevitable bias towards the end of the decade?

You'd think that but 2006 is currently winning in both polls (albeit tied in the second one with three other years) :o

Now 65, which represents the late summer-winter music of 2006, is quite easily my favourite Now album of the 00s, and favourite overall since Now 41 (1998) - probably a good barometer of how good the music in the charts was for me seeing as most of it was on there. The most recent Now album, Now 78 on the other hand? I think I listened to it once before filing it away in my collection
I found 2006 to be poor when it comes to singles. I remember I struggled to find 20 that I liked at the end of it. 2007 and 2008 were much better but 2009 was not great and 2010 was mostly tripe. This year is very bad too.

I think there's also some people who think music gets progressively worse every year, so 2000 will obviously be their option.

I'm not surprised nobody has voted for 2011 yet tbh. It's been such a boring year really. There's been a few stand-out tunes (Wonderman, Blind Faith, Coming Home, Moment 4 Life, Sweat, I Need a Doctor, Just Can't Get Enough, All of the Lights, Simply Unstoppable, Beautiful People), but really, I think at the end of May in any other year I would've produced a much longer list than this. :(

I put 2009. It was just before this horrible transition into R&B took place and it was electro pop esc kind of things with little boots, la roux and florence all doing very well. Its a shame they all dissappeared in 2010 and 2011 and left ellie to fly the flag on her own
I voted for 2009 in the end as my favourite. Little Boots, Animal Collective, The Horrors, Noah & the Whale, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Temper Trap, The Girl & The Robot

Really?! :o 2009 seems like the year where RnB died for me! Now artists who used to put out RnB songs are singing on David Guetta, RedOne and Benny Benassi productions.

And the BEPs came out with an electro-hop album. And the biggest urban UK hits were the likes of Bonkers and Number 1, whilst awesome songs, they're very electro and synthesized.

2007 in terms of charts - 'Umbrella', 'Bleeding Love', 'When You're Gone'.

2006 regardless of charts - 'Unfaithful', 'Maneater', 'So Sick', 'Ain't No Other Man', '...Punk Rocker', 'Welcome to the Black Parade'.

As if 2006 is winning  A bit baffled by the popularity of this (IMO) crappy year, but then pop music was probably better in 2006 than it was in 2003-2005 as I said in the other thread, and not having the cheesyness of some of the 2000-2002 stuff, so maybe that's why - as pop music is this site's favourite genre?

Weird popularity for 2000, too, especially when 2001 and 2002 seems to be generally disliked? I can only think of dance fans who might be voting for it?

I liked 45, 50, 56, 58, 61, 74... but indeed the Now albums of the late 90s are unbeatable for me.

Don't you mean transition to dance? I can see your point though - by my money David Guetta is probably the most influental person in popular music over the last couple of years and 2009 is probably where a lot of that influence was shaped what with the likes of Sexy Chick and I Gotta Feeling. Now almost everything in the charts has house influences.

The mid-2000s were far more R&B than now, to be honest.

Plus the year of BuzzJack's historic inception - good times :funky:

Dance was amazing in 2000, hands down my favourite year for the genre of the 00s, nine of my top ten favourite songs of the year were dance, although my favourite song wasn't (Vanessa Amorosi - Absolutely Everybody).

Now 74 was decent, as was most of 2009 in general, but I can't say I love most of your other Now selections there, 61 in particular was one of my least favourites, Disc 1 was woeful, I only like They, Shiver and Other Side Of The World from it  Still not as bad as Now 63, which swept up the awful remainders of 2005 and served as a reminder that the first three months of 2006 were actually terrible (before it got a HELL of a lot better). Disc 1 on there is PACKED with flop pop, which would have been even too $hite for the Hits albums and Disc 2 wasn't to my taste at all aside from gems from Embrace and Texas.

In terms of chart success I voted for 2003. Darkness, Evanescence, Electric Six, Muse, A (few) great classic dance tracks and very few songs I didn't like. 2009 and 2007 close behind.

In terms of overall music I voted 2007. There were still some good hits (Maximo Park, Fall Out Boy, Arctics, Klaxons), and this year was pretty much the zenith of indie, and the music overall was just fantastic.

Edit: however saying all that, my favourite end of year top ten in probably 2004, oddly. I guess the quality drops off fairly quickly after that, plus there were some absolutely terrible hits that year which stain the memory.

2003 - albums from Mars Volta, Muse and Blur were three of the best of the decade.

Yeah, I'm not even a dance music fan but even I can see that 2000 was a strong year for the genre. Although there was SO much getting pushed through into the charts at the time that it's probably hard not to hear a few songs I liked - Disc 2 of Now 46 for example is all entirely dance practically :drama:

Oh dear - Now 61 was probably my favourite of that entire selection!! That whole period was bliss for me, personally - almost all the songs I liked did well, which was nice. I seem to recall that album definitely soundtracked my summer for a lot of that year. The likes of Hard To Beat, Forever Lost, Shot You Down, Ghetto Gospel, The Avenue, So Good, etc, definitely give me a summer 2005 feeling anyway. And yeah, those 3 songs you mentioned were lovely too. How nice it was to see Natalie Imbruglia come back with an airplay #1 smash and a #1 album - akin to Sophie Ellis-Bextor doing the same in 2011, probably

I agree about late 2005/early 2006 - probably the most bizarre thing about it was the strange "2002" feeling in a few of the acts - Friday Hill having a couple of hits, when they were in fact three members of Blazin' Squad; Liz McLarnon, a former member of Atomic Kitten, having a solo top 5 hit; Son of Dork, a band with a member of Busted in, having a couple of hits. And then you had the 80s vibe with the likes of Dead or Alive being re-released, A-ha having a random top 10 hit out of nowhere, and the likes of Sunblock doing their dodgy 80s remakes! Oh dear indeed...

Disc 2 of Now 46 was heaven for me back in the day

I definitely liked disc 2 of Now 61 a lot more, The Avenue was definitely my summer anthem that year too, and So Good was great, but disc 1 is my single least favourite Now disc to date. Yep, that was great for Natalie, I bought her album on the day of release and then went on holiday all week without internet. To come back Sunday night to find that she had a #1 album was a definite shock after the criminal underperformance of Shiver.

Not to mention that bland Liberty X cover of A Night To Remember, I have no idea how or why all of the 2002 acts all crawled back out of the woodwork to more success three years later  It was totally out of sync with the music trends of the first 8 months of the year!

That is an excellent list. I went for 2001 for chart music, loved the following:

Smooth Criminal

Clint Eastwood

Imitation of Life

Fat Lip

Teenage Dirtbag

Elevation

Mr. Writer

Just Like A Pill

Any year where all of those can go top 10 is a winner. Plus you had Muse and The Strokes breaking through and Slipknot scoring a #1 album.

2004 for me in terms of music full stop, many of the #1s were poor but it was home to the following albums:

Aha Shake Heartbreak

American Idiot

Collision Course

Franz Ferdinand

Funeral

Hopes and Fears

Hot Fuss

Kasabian

The Libertines

Reise, Reise

Silent Alarm

Start Something

Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge

Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses

You Are The Quarry

Amazing. The four in bold are in my top 20 of all time.

Obviously, every year has it's standouts, but for me 2009 is the best....

Poker Face, I gotta Feeling, Just Dance, Bad Boys, Broken Strings, Bad Romance, Boom Boom Pow, Untouched, Evacuate the Dancefloor, I'm not Alone, Jai Ho, Single Ladies, Halo, Forever Is Over, Not Fair, Righ t Round, Number 1....

If there is any 2 albums anyone should own, they should be Now! 73 and 74 - Filled with absaloute gems and classics!

2000 (the best year for the dance genres, with trance, house, garage, and europop doing great. Pop music was cheesy fun, the alternative genre was still good, some good rock songs came out this year, and R&B was still R&B with Timbaland, Darkchild, Stargate producing some quality stuff)

2001 (great year for eurotrance, R&B became very big, pop was excellent)

2002 (great mix of genres dominated the charts, dance was still good, pop was really good and had diverse sounds, minus the idol crap)

2009 (the year pop returned to the charts)

2003 (fabulous year for R&B)

2004 (generally a good year for pop and dance, the R&B was ok)

2006 (a bit too indie-centric, but the pop was great this year)

2010 (decent year)

2008 (some european music started to crossover, saved the year)

2007 (indie overload, dance was crap in general, pop was in a bad place)

2005 (indie crap and bad urban music in general. Dance music was dead.)
