I thought the second one was absolutely terrible, it just ruined the simplicity and emotion of the original :puke2: the 2004 one was OK, but not a touch on the original

30 - Queen & David Bowie "Under Pressure" (1981) (+21)

 

This spent 2 weeks at number one and was Bowie's 3rd number one and a second number one for Queen (their first being 'Bohemian Rhapsody'). Nine years later Vanilla Ice would get this back at number one under the title 'Ice Ice Baby' and 29 years later Jedward and Vanilla Ice would get this to number 2.

 

I really like 'Under Pressure'. I can't abide Queen but it really is good, shows what working with someone good does.

29 - Berlin "Take My Breath Away (Love Theme From "Top Gun")" (1986) (+22)

 

This song spent four weeks at number one thanks to it coming from a movie that was big at the time. Berlin, named after the capital city of Germany however only scored one more T40 with 'You Don't Know', reaching number 39. TMBA was re-released in 1990 and peaked at number 3.

 

28 - Dexy's Midnight Runners with The Emerald Express "Come On Eileen" (1982) (+24)

 

This was the biggest hit for Dexy's and was their second number one. The fact that a comment on youtube saying 'one of the best one hit wonders of the 80s' is a high rated comment says it all. It was massive compared to their other hits. The Emerald Express however, didn't have another hit.

 

Not a fan of 'Come on Eileen', 'Geno' on the other hand.... :wub:

27 - Eurythmics "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" (1985) (+24)

 

This is the only number one scored by the duo. They almost made it with pop classic 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' but that was stopped by Bonnie Tyler.

 

26 - The Jam "A Town Called Malice/Precious" (1982) (+24)

 

This is the third out of four number ones for The Jam. The song debuted at the top of the chart and spent 3 weeks at the top, the same length of time as their other big hit 'Going Underground'

 

25 - Yazz & The Plastic Population "The Only Way Is Up" (1988) (+25)

 

This was the biggest hit for Yazz and her plastic pop., spending 5 weeks atop the UK chart. Yazz went on to have more hits (3 more going T10) but The Plastic Population only got one more hit with Yazz (Doctorin' The House) and no solo hits

 

Come On Eileen is probably my favourite number 1 of the 80s, unbelievably catchy :wub: Really love a Town Called Malice too, really catchy yet quite thought provoking at the same time

24 - Nena "99 Red Balloons" (1984) (+26)

 

The only hit for Nena in the UK is this, which spent 3 weeks at the UK number one spot. Their follow up reached number 70. Recently Nena charted in the top 40 One Hit Wonders of all time at number 24 (coincidence that it's number 24 here too)

 

23 - The Bangles "Eternal Flame" (1989) (+28)

 

This was the biggest hit for popular 80s group, The Bangles who had missed out number one opportunities with 'Manic Monday' and 'Walk Like An Egyptian'. This spent four weeks at the top spot, double the weeks of what Atomic Kitten would spend with their cover twelve years later (the AK version is a guilty pleasure for me, it's my favourite AK song)

 

22 - M/A/R/R/S "Pump Up The Volume/Antina (The First Time I See She Dance)" (1987) (+29)

 

One Hit Wonder group (I'm assuming it's a group) M/A/R/R/S spent 2 weeks at number one with this dance hit that is quite different to most of the number ones in the countdown. It didn't have a lot of vocals [apart from 'pump up the volume, dance dance'] but that didn't stop it from being popular.

 

21 - David Bowie "Ashes To Ashes" (1980) (+31)

 

It's him again! David Bowie just missed out on top 20 here with his second UK number one and his first of the 80s. The title of this song comes from the 'ashes to ashes...' reading that they read at funerals.
