This Progressed is not my cup of tea. Does is make it worse music? No, i don't think so. It happen that i don't like overloaded "electronic" music, but the simple one, a la Depeche Mode till 95 or PetShopBoys in their glory days. This style is not likeable per se, that is way there is very much difference between what one says and the other.

While i don't like this Progress, at least they try new things and i think this is imortant for an artist, even when not everything will be gold. Sure, they could have stuck to a gendre and do endlessly piano ballads  ...

I also think that some of the songs from Progress would have been genial with other production and orchestration. Hope they will look for another producer for their next Album.

The only think i shrug is that Robbie does a Gary produced album. Shame was nice, but is nothing worse than an album full of "nice" songs.

But it appears with Take That that this 'new thing' they're trying is in fact just a pale imitation of what was done by other artists over 30 years ago.

I hope I have a good time tomorrow - but I don't think I'm going to enjoy the 'Progress' bit at all - it just sounds like old men playing at being kids.

Well, they didn't invent the ballad either, was also done a lot before. If they have continued the Circus red line, they could have discovered something new, but so they only discovered something new for themselfves.

THe point is that there are a limited amount of notes, instruments and accords. So each song will end up to be a pale imitation of something else.

From all TT, only for Gary is something unusual electronic music. Mark and Robbie had done it before, Howard as a succesful DJ in Germany has also to know it. SOmehow only for Gary this style seems to me forced and "artificial". WHich brings me back to my opinion that Gary is a wonderful singer but with a narrow comfort zone. And there is a reason why Jason has so little imput in this album: his voice suits "fragile" songs, folkish and stripped down better.

To summ up: i don't like Progress or Progressed too much, but i don't begrudge them . I didn't buy the album as i didn't buy the DVD of The Circus (I must be the only person not liking the Circus tour, was too cartoonish for me). I try to see them on this tour as i am sure this is the last time they come to Germany and the last chance i have to see Jason, Mark and Howard. There are still a lot of songs i will enjoy.

Kath just stop being so pessimistic and enjoy tomorrow!

Take That had to re-invent their sound or risk ending up like Westlife (being stereotyped and sales of albums and singles falling).

Oh I will enjoy tomorrow believe you me! I know I'm going to like the TT4 introduction (subdued as it is reported to be). Looking forward a lot more to Rob's solo set (to satisfy my own curiosity and discover this 'charisma' that everyone says he has) ... and am REALLY looking forward to the end bit where the TT5 do the early stuff. Its just the Progress bit I'm not so certain of enjoying - and I hope to goodness that, being the last night in Manchester, they don't experiment with us by playing some of the more dire elements of Progressed!

I will report back with my most honest, critical review ever!

Hi people, i am new here, just reading through some of the posts and i find it so strange to see such negativity, while i would agree progressed/progress is not the strongest album they have produced it is not a bad collection of songs either. Take That have done an album that is different, and with Robbie rejoining that was to be expected as they did not want to do an album that sounded like robbie or take that they needed something different and that is what came from it. Its almost like damned if they do and damned if they dont. While this era is not their strongest musicially i believe they have still managed to come up with some great songs that are enjoyable.

Anyone going to a concert should be excited and wanting to have a good time, if you are going with such a negative attitude i really fail to see how you will enjoy it as its almost like you are set to not like it before you even get there. It is my belief you should go with an open mind and judge the songs and the show on the basis of what you see and hear in front of you, that way you could potentially have a fantastic night.

Every time i hear "negativity" and "negative" related to TT as a reproach , i have to think of TTO forums. Please, can we agree that this is not a TTO forum? If people have a less-than-extatic oppinion, let it be!

If someone wants to read entusiasthic posts full of love for everything TT made, TTO forum is exactly the place to be. I really want to say here my oppinion without thinking at the poor souls of TT fans, who are so shocked about people not liking every breath of TT.

And i hate in real life people who order me to think positiv as the solution of all my problems and my illness. This was Off Topic and not related to pippa post, but it really bugs me. WHen i have some feelings, i have the right to have them, i puke at this social pressure "to think positive, enjoy every second, smile to everyone", so i am allergic to the words "i should not be so negative".

I've been to see them several times so far (1XUT, 4 XBW and 3XTC). I went with a closed mind to the UT but came away with a lot of admiration if not a fan - as it wasn't until the release of BW that I started to listen to their music (I had thought the UT tour was just a money-spinning Hello/Goodbye sort of tour and that would be the end of them.) I went to the BW tour on the strength of the album and wasn't disappointed. I was slightly disappointed with The Circus album (apart from a few killer songs - UAN, SIA, HUAL) so went with a fairly open mind as I knew that the whole concert wouldn't be just songs from that album. Progress though - for me has nothing that comes out and grabs your attention at all - its a solidly average album that is well put together in that nearly all the songs sound the same. There is nothing to be excited about.

Now the concert - I'm going because I know I'll have a good time listening to the rest of the music.

And really - I hate the word 'negativity' being referred to as though its a bad thing. If the guys keep hearing that everything they do is great, tops, can't be bettered, then they'll continue to produce mediocre material - which is what Progressed is.

Kath

"mediocre material " is your opinion, and i would think not everyone would agree with this, negativity is needed i agree, but then so should positivity.

exactly!

As long you don't prescribe this positivity as a medicine for everyone while complaining about every critic here as "Negativity", be as positive as you like!

apparently Progressed is being released in the US on 21 June...i doubt it will make an impact at all if im honest

I'm not ashamed to admit that I really love Take That and, as Kathyp once delicately put it, Gary could sing the yellow pages and die hard fans would lap it up (I'd be one of those). :P Progress took a few listens but many songs grew on me and now I love them, so I'm pretty sure the exact same will happen with Progressed.

However... /rant on

It bothers me when bands release deluxe editions of albums, trying to make out that it's a great fan package (if it were for fans we wouldn't have to buy what we've already purchased before). I don't buy many albums so it was unusual for me to get even a Take That album on its first week, but honestly I doubt I'd have bothered had I known I could spend the same and get an extra 8 tracks (I wouldn't have bought Love Love either). I'll still buy it - it's still cheaper to pay £3.99 on Amazon for those 7 tracks than buy them individually - even though it increases the likelihood of this happening in the future, but it does irritate me and this is the only place I can grumbling about it!

/rant off

Despite that, I do hope it does well. Those who held off from getting Progress but can find a few songs they like are in for a real treat!

On first impressions I think my favourite songs from that teaser posted earlier are Man and Don't Say Goodbye, but I really need to hear them all in full first. It seems a bit strange to me that Robbie is only taking lead on one track... I'm pleasantly surprised by Aliens sang by Mark and Howard - Howard's songs usually take me the longest to get into, but I quite like that after just a few short listens.

I love take that but i would have no problem in saying i dont like a song or a single, i wouldnt just like it because its them, im still waiting for my copy of progressed to arrive so i cant comment on the new songs. Progress itself was a good album but would be my least faveourite of their studio albums since they returned, on saying that i still like it and think it was a good follow up to the circus which i think is their best album ever.

The progress era definitly is an era that grows on you, and i love the flood and eight letters the most, love love i also adore as i think its very very catchy and would rank highly on my list of favourite take that singles.

As for deluxes,i guess in a way i dont know what my opinion is, i bought progress first time round but i dont mind buying progressed as its 8 new songs so its like getting a new album, when artsist i really like release new album i buy them on release and then say i will look forward to the deluxe later, with other artists i dont bother buying the albums and i just wait for the deluxe, so overall im probably not overly bothered about deluxe albums.

I was partly joking but I like lots of artists with a few that I love, Take That happening to be one of those. I can still say I prefer one song over the other, but I haven't heard anything I dislike from them yet. There's still time for me to eat my words though!

When I first listened to Progress it would have been my least favourite of their newer stuff, but now I think Beautiful World probably fits that description for me now. Don't get me wrong, I think it has some of their best songs on it, but those stand out a little too much making the rest feel average. I agree with your favourites from Progress Aphrodite, and you're right that it's an album that grows on you. My least favourites have always been Affirmation and What Do You Want From Me? but even those tracks I'm starting to like quite a bit. I really wasn't sure about Love Love when I first heard it, but it's one of my favourites too now. :) Hope you enjoy the EP!

I was pretty grouchy when I wrote my post and I don't think it's deluxe albums I actually have a problem with (I bought Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster). It's probably more than annoyance that I like Take That so much I just couldn't hold off from buying their album and now wish I hadn't... however, I had my rant and felt better for it. I won't be getting the album this week as there was something else I wanted to get, so instead I'll just buy the 7 tracks I don't have individually at my leisure.

well it looks like they are going to claim their 7th number one album according to the midweeks so its all good :)

My opinion (for what its worth lol).

Progressed isn't as good as Progress by a long way.

Love Love is a great song and I love When We Were Young I think its a brilliant song. Don't Say Goodbye and The Day The Work Is Done are Ok, Aliens is poor, so is Wonderful World and Beautiful is absolutely dreadful.

Really disappointed to be honest.

I was very disappointed but even more so perhaps. The only song of note on it (for me) is Love, Love. I was hoping that there'd be a hidden killer in there but they're all rather mediocre with the exceptions of Man and Aliens which are (IMO) just plain rubbish.

I have honestly given up now on Take That (or Robbie for that matter) turning out any really good stuff in future. The solid fan base they have will buy anything they do so they don't even have to try.

Kath

Edit! I WILL however keep going to watch any future concerts they do (especially with Rob as part of the group) as they know how to put on an excellent (more than) value for money show!
