Posted June 14, 201114 yr I distinctly remember saying to myself in Jan 1994 that it was going to be a good year for music. I had no idea it was going to be so spectacularly brilliant and that it was to be a turning point in British music - and American music to a certain extent too. Barely a month went by without some album being released that was a contender for album of the decade - in August there were three. People talk about 1991 with it's Nevermind, Loveless, Blue Lines and it's Screamadelica and it too was a special year but '94 was so far ahead of the rest of the 90s for me and that is saying something because the decade was so good in general. Do I just like it because I loved some of the albums from that year and they sit in my Top 5 of all time or was it as special for you? So in no order whatsoever these are the album that I think made 1994 a contender for best year ever. Oasis - Definitely Maybe Blur - Park Life Jeff Buckley - Grace Portishead - Dummy Nine Inch Nails - Downward Spiral Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works II Prodigy - Music for the Jilted Generation Suede - Dog Man Star Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible Tori Amos - Under the Pink Green Day - Dookie Nirvana - MTV Unplugged Soundgarden - Superunknown Weezer - The Blue Album Nas - Illmatic Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain Massive Attack - Protection Beck - Mellow Gold Orbital - Snivilisation Hole - Live through This Morrissey - Vauxhall & I Pulp - His and Hers Therapy? - Troublegum Divine Comedy - Promenade Edited June 14, 201114 yr by tonyttt31
June 14, 201114 yr 1994 sure was a good year for indie and I would add these: EDC - Satchel Dubnobasswithmyheadman - Underworld Ill Communication - Beastie Boys Monster - R.E.M. One Last Laugh In A Place Of Dying - The God Machine Everyone’s Got One - Echobelly Carnival Of Light - Ride File Under: Easy Listening - Sugar Experimental Jet Set, Trash And No Star - Sonic Youth Give Out But Don't Give Up - Primal Scream Jar of Flies - Alice In Chains SMASH - The Offspring Hungry For Stink - L7 American Thighs - Veruca Salt and I know it got panned but I thought it was wonderful: The Stone Roses - Second Coming
June 14, 201114 yr Author I'd take the Second Coming over Give Out But Don't Give Up or Monster any day. Also, The Division Bell had some great songs on it and The Cranberries album was good in my opinion.

The Division Bell was ok but I got seriously bored of The Cranberries. I will always have fond memories of GOBDGU as I was (and still am) a Primals nut. And I will always prefer Monster over the drivel R.E.M. sometimes came out with during the 90s like Out Of Time. I think it was a worthy sucessor to Automatic for the People.
June 14, 201114 yr loads of great albums from 94, including 2 of my favourite ever albums (Downward Spiral - NIN, Blue album - Weezer).

June 15, 201114 yr :o :( I know I am quite alone on this but I have never liked Out of Time. Losing My Religion is vastly over-rated and as for that abomination Shiny Happy People... The rest of the record just drifts by aimlessly for me. Really don't like it.
June 15, 201114 yr 1994 was the last great stand for indie really. After that the major labels got hold of it and they've never really relinquished it.

June 15, 201114 yr Well, we'll agree to differ. I much prefer it to Automatic for the People. You know it's funny how we like so much of the same kind of music but when it comes to specifics, we're poles apart!!! No problem with that though, think it's great!!!

June 20, 201114 yr 1994 sure was a good year for indie and I would add these: Dubnobasswithmyheadman - Underworld agreed - all-time classic album..... I absolutely HATE REM's Monster, though.....
June 20, 201114 yr agreed - all-time classic album..... Dubnobass... is easily in my all time top 10, let alone top 10 of 94. Such a fantastic album from start to finish.
June 20, 201114 yr I actually only got Dubnobass recently but I've only played it once. Play it again!
June 20, 201114 yr Author I played it in the gym this evening. I found it to be a bit dull although I didn't get through it all.
June 21, 201114 yr Dubnobass... is easily in my all time top 10, let alone top 10 of 94. Such a fantastic album from start to finish. Fully agreed - a sprawling, majestic, epic masterpiece that they've come nowhere near to matching since. It's in my all-time top 10, too. Their last album, 'Barking' and, to a lesser degree, 'Oblivion with bells' were both welcome almost-returns to form, though.....

The rest of the record just drifts by aimlessly for me. Really don't like it. Yep, I have to say that I really hated the "pop" direction that REM went in with Out of Time.... "Murmur", "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Document" were absolutely superb albums, then Out of Time comes along and I just thought... "What utter and total PISH is this???".. "Automatic for the People" was better, I loved "Monster" because it was kind of removed from the poppy direction... But since then, I feel they've just been treading water.....
