We don’t know how to have fun.’ (Laughs)–Nicole THERE isn’t a more truthful way to start an article about the Pussycat Dolls than with, “It’s a dream come true for every freakin’ man in the world! Expletive. Expletive. Whoo! Another expletive.†I could’ve started with that sentence, but ladies and gentlemen, we have restraint here in Super!-land. So, let me start with this: Expletive! Expletive! Expletive! Whooo!!! I (expletive!) met the Pussycat Dolls! Expletive. Sorry. I’ll calm down now. We’ve all loved the Pussycat Dolls since they exploded into the music scene two years ago. But the group was actually founded way before that, in 1995, by choreographer Robin Antin. They started as a burlesque dance troupe in Los Angeles. I was 8 years old then—“*****†to me meant two things: 1) a cat, and 2) a baby cat. Wait, it still means those two things to me. I promise. It was in 2004 that the dance troupe was transformed into a recording group. The Pussycat Dolls were recast, giving us the six sexy ladies we have on our bedroom walls. Hey, dolls! Nicole Kea/Scherzinger is the lead vocalist of the Dolls. She’s half Filipina. She says, jokingly, that she was excited to come to the Philippines because she wants to be in a place where everyone looks like her. She cried as she stepped off the plane when she saw lines of people waiting for them. Nicole began performing with Actors Theatre of Louisville. She later majored in theater arts at Wright State University, but put her studies on hold to pursue dancing. Carmit Bachar is one of the original Dolls. She’s been a member of the group longer than any other performer. She’s a dancer—both her parents were dancers, so it’s in her blood. She was a gymnast - she has competed in the Gymnastics World Championships. She is, of course, a musician as well. She attended the Hamilton Academy of Music in Los Angeles, studying music, dance, piano, and viola. Aba. Meanwhile, the other members of the group are really centered on dancing. Jessica Sutta started dance classes at the age of three, and at 14 she went to the New World School of the Arts to study dance. She joined the Miami Heat dance team in 1999, and became its captain in 2001. Kimberly Wyatt has danced since she was seven years old. By the time she was 14 she was earning scholarships to study in New York each summer. Robin Antin, PCD’s founder, says, “Kimberly is the sexiest dancer I have ever seen in my life.†Ashley Roberts began dancing at the age of 3, and singing at the age of 8. After high school she moved permanently to Los Angeles, and within six months of her move she was also a Pussycat Doll. Melody Thornton, lastly, is the baby of the group. She was found from an open call audition. She saw the Dolls on MTV and heard they were auditioning for a new band member. Melody went along to the audition and was chosen. “It’s a Cinderella story,†she says. More than sexy There’s a lot behind these girls. It’s more than just dance moves and sexy clothes. I saw this as the Dolls went through other interviews. I overheard their schedule—they flew in just hours before we sat down to talk— and if I had a schedule like that I’d be dead. But the whole time, throughout all the interviews, they looked like they were genuinely having fun, they looked in love with what they do. They were a well-oiled machine, too. They went through recording station IDs and greetings, and different TV shows, and languages, like clockwork. Kimberly explained later, “The Pussycat Dolls are like a system.†Ate Pussies That doesn’t mean they’re not human. They’re so human, in fact, that I think we can be close friends. Yes. I, believe I can be close friends with the Pussycat Dolls. Or if not, they can be my ates. A kid came in followed by the “Wish Ko Lang†crew, had her shirt and poster signed, and took pictures with them. They reached out and hugged her. No, didn’t appear mechanical - not at all. It looked very heartfelt. A Taiwanese station gave the girls chocolate Hello Kitties. Like, you don’t expect the Pussycat Dolls to eat chocolate, right? But, “Everyday is a cheat day,†Melody says, referring to following a diet. At the start of our interview, we were sitting on the floor, and the girls were finishing their chocolates. Tim and I sorta wanted to test them by asking them to make funny faces. We didn’t expect them to - people in the entertainment industry hold on to their image as tight as skin. We asked anyway, “Can you make funny faces for us?†Nicole answered, “We don’t do funny faces.†Tim and I went, “Ok--†but then she continued, “Cause we don’t know how to have fun,†and laughed. That was the start of a real conversation. Here’s some of the stuff we talked about: Talking Dolls If you had all the time and money in the world, what would you do to relax? Melody: I’d go to Saint-Tropez! How ‘bout Boracay? Kimberly: Yeah, we’d love to go there! Carmit: Nicole and I were joking— we’ll all disappear, not show up at our concert, and go to Boracay! (Laughs) “Don’t Cha†has become an anthem for this generation—for girls, young people, party people. When you were starting out, was that your plan, to make these types of songs? Nicole: Not at all. We were actually caught by surprise at how big the song became! We’re flattered by it, of course. Do you still get to go out partying? Ashley: Nah, not as often. But it’s always a party around us! (Laughs) What are some of the worst pick-up lines you’ve heard when you go out? Ashley: There’s always the, “Don’t I know you?†line. Kimberly: Yeah. (Laughs) Nicole: I once got, “You’re attractive... and I’m attracted.†Hey, can I use that? Melody: That’s a good line! Jessica: Some guy came up to me once in a record store and asked, “Hey, what’s a good CD?†(Laughs) I went, “I don’t work here!†(Laughs) Can you give us tips on like, how to approach you? Ashley: We don’t bite! Carmit: You know, just be yourself. And, we also need intellectual stimulation. A good, meaningful conversation is always good. Having a sense of humor always breaks the ice. A lot of people are starstruck at you; are there celebrities you get starstruck at? Melody: Nick Lache! I saw him once and came up to him, really giddy, and asked for his picture. Now I realize how much better it would’ve been if I just said, “Hey, Nick. Can I have your picture?†Jessica: We were at an MTV awards show with Madonna. I was really starstruck! Ashley: I’m thinking hard. I honestly don’t know! Nicole: Mariah Carey. Carmit: I met Mariah Carey once, and I cried for a whole hour after! Kimberly: I’m like that with Whitney Houston. Super Scoop! You’re hearing it here first: Nicole Kea is Bench Body’s newest, um, body! She’ll be here a little longer to shoot for Bench. You might be able to catch her. Remember guys: they like meaningful conversations and a sense of humor. Do not use the line, “You’re attractive and I’m attracted.†That’s my line. The Pussycat Dolls Live in Manila, and this Super interview, could not have been possible without Nokia. Edited July 30, 200618 yr by Dino
