The current cost of a TV License is £131 but it is due to rise every year by 2.5% over inflation.

Initially it was to fund only the BBC, but since the widespread use of satelite and cable channels and less and less people watching BBC channels is this cost still justifiable.

Failure to have one costs £1000, is this right or wrong, is it too much or not enough?

Should the BBC raise money for its programs from advertising like every other channel? Would this dumb down the BBC or make no difference.

In this day and age to we care about auntie beeb or not.

TV License sucks :puke2: can't they just stick adverts on instead?

And plus, BBC channels are hardly anything special are they? Well they don't cater for me anyway - at all, so they have failed in that department. The last thing I properly watched on there was probably the Eurovision.

Noooooooooooo I DESPISE ads on tv and another channel offering them would be a disaster

I would like to see sponsorship of BBC programs though so stuff like Eastenders, Only Fools, Little Britain or whatever could be sponsored and the company get a logo and announcement on screen in the opening and closing credits etc so at least that way there is money coming in and no ads

With other things like that the licence fee could be phased out

no ads... i hate ads... no matter how many times i am subjected to 2 fat northern kids, im NOT going to buy a bloody zaphira!

i cant see them doing away with the license, with so many channels now available advertising revenue is low anyway.

like it or not, its here to stay.

..And just what is essentially the difference between paying an annual licence fee or paying monthly for cable and satellite channels (such as Sky 1, Sci Fi, Living and various movie channels, etc) which show repeats a lot more often than the BBC does, shows almost exclusively the most crummy of the American imports (and precious little actual original programming or documentaries), AND you still have to put up with advertising every 10 minutes (literally)....?

Nope, sorry, I like the BBC as it is, warts and all. If it became a commercial broadcaster, the quality of the programming would plummet and you certainly wouldn't have the sort of excellent specialised programming for minority interests....

I don't know why I pay the licence fee - I hardly ever watch the BBC. As with David, the last thing I properly watched on there was Eurovision. For news I prefer ITV, or even Channel 4 if I can bring myself to stand John Snow for longer than 5 minutes (possibly the most argumentative newscaster? Hello, I want to hear NEWS, not your opinion when we're talking to someone in the area!). I can stand adverts. In fact, these days I mostly watch Channel 4. You've got Frasier in the morning (or at least you DID...), T4 on the weekend, The Simpsons around about tea, and then a good laugh at how delusional some of the people in Big Brother are. Plus, the Friday night lineup on Channel 4 is a godsend compared to every other channel's idea of entertainment on a Friday evening. So, screw the licence fee. Can't you just barr BBC for me and then I can get on with my life without ANOTHER bill for something I hardly ever use?
