July 11, 201114 yr I like this chart :) Do we not have any precise airplay numbers then? Like number of spins or audience? We do, but we only have estimates for the sales of most songs. (We have exact sales for a few - in this week's top 50 we have exact sales for the top 3, #5 and 6, #12, #30 and #45 - the OZAP report may give some more sales)
July 18, 201114 yr Author What I've done is combined the sales and airplay charts to make a Billboard-type chart. A number one would have 50 points, number two 49 points etc. for both charts, so a song can have maximum 100 points if tops both the sales and airplay chart. Ties are broken by what song has sold more. These are the number ones: Sales - The Wanted 'Glad You Came' Airplay - ADELE 'Set Fire To The Rain' And this is the Billboard-type chart: Another close battle this week, but Example was out of it - dropping 5 places to no.6. 'Glad You Came' by The Wanted scored 94 points, enough for a number 2 debut - but Beyonce scored 95 and climbed to this weeks top spot. ADELE reaches a new peak of 3 - she has 50 points from airplay but isn't even top ten in the sales chart. The comeback for Scouting For Girls debuts at 16 - one place higher than their sales peak. 01. Beyonce ‘Best Thing I Never Had’ (13-2-1) (3 weeks) 02. The Wanted 'Glad You Came' (1 week) 03. August 14, 201113 yr A couple of years ago myself and a couple of others would post threads here with the Hit40UK charts and were to stop because it was "a made up chart" and meaningless because it used a mix of sales and airplay. August 20, 201113 yr Author What I've done is combined the sales and airplay charts to make a Billboard-type chart. A number one would have 50 points, number two 49 points etc. for both charts, so a song can have maximum 100 points if tops both the sales and airplay chart. Ties are broken by what song has sold more. These are the number ones: Sales - Nero "Promises" Airplay - JLS feat. Dev "She Makes Me Wanna" And this is the Billboard-type chart: JLS have a third week at number one breaking their own record for most points scored. They are number 2 in sales and number 1 in airplay giving them a total of 99 points and a 7 point lead ahead of The Wanted. The official number one debuts at 14 this week, it has some airplay but even 'Party Rock Anthem' and 'Mr Saxobeat' is beating it despite not being T20 officialy. 01. JLS feat. Dev 'She Makes Me Wanna' (1-1-1) (3 weeks) 02. The Wanted 'Glad You Came' (2-1-2-2-2) (5 weeks) 03. David Guetta feat. Taio Cruz & Ludacris 'Little Bad Girl' (31-27-18-8-3) (5 weeks) 04. Only the official charts were allowed to be discussed...........    Wasn't the Hit40UK charts broadcast on the radio though? I might be thinking of the wrong chart, but I think it was the one that got replaced by the Big Top 40 Show a couple of years ago? I agree that you should've been allowed to post it and discuss it, but a lot of people don't like charts that "compete" with the official chart, if you know what I mean.
August 20, 201113 yr Author but a lot of people don't like charts that "compete" with the official chart, if you know what I mean. Yeah, I get annoyed thinking about the fact more people listen to Capital's Big Top 40 than the actual, real, official chart show. If only R1 got a better presenter to do it and get on with the music (Reggie has recently started to do this actually so good on him - great to hear the whole T40 and less chat)

If only R1 got a better presenter to do it and get on with the music (Reggie has recently started to do this actually so good on him - great to hear the whole T40 and less chat) It's not just Capital. Most of the commercial radio stations in the country play it (even Heart FM, etc.), which is probably why it gets such insanely high audiences I guess. At school, another common error with regards to the charts I found was that some people thought the iTunes chart was the official chart. So if you asked them what the current #1 is, they'd go on iTunes, and read the #1 from there.

Now they seem to make it up as they go along with songs suddenly moving about the chart as the show progresses (eg something gets played as a new entry at 31 yet later on when they get to the top 10 it's suddenly number 8 with all the songs between 11 and 30 dropping a place each on the chart published on their website. I stopped listening after a couple of weeks. I accept it wasn't the official chart but my point for discussing it at the time was that it was a chart being broadcast on the radio (to a much larger audience) and this is a chart forum. :)

Wes - to be fair - wasn't a bad presenter but the clowns who have done it since then have been woeful. I don't listen any more but I did catch parts of the show when I was out in the car in recent weeks and I thought I noticed less chat from Reggie Maybe time to start listening again.....

After all, it is a live chart, and they're usually already playing the top 20 before they know what the top 10 is, hence songs sometimes charting twice, and all that. If I were them, I'd probably make the chart the live top 40 on iTunes as of 4pm. Because then, at least, they would know exactly what the whole chart would be before playing it, and it would be easier for the listeners to comprehend. Although they'd still get songs charting twice, but often it's alternate versions of the same song anyway, so it's not too bad.

Just before they started using the current format they used the official download chart with an airplay element between 11 and 40. What would have been the perfect solution would have been to use the official download chart which is practically the same as the official chart anyway given the very small number of physical singles sold these days.....
August 21, 201113 yr I wish our chart was more like Billboard, makes for a more interesting chart. Personally don't think 'Swagger Jagger' even deserves top 30 position.
August 21, 201113 yr I wish our chart was more like Billboard, makes for a more interesting chart. If by 'more interesting' you mean 'less interesting' and by 'was' you mean 'wasn't' I fully agree.
August 21, 201113 yr Airplay makes the charts move really slowly imo. Plus, at least in the UK, airplay tends to favours artists like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, JLS and Rihanna, and it hurts artists like Nero, Kanye West, Calvin Harris and Foster the People, so including airplay is probably not as good an idea as some people might think.
August 21, 201113 yr this thread has made me realise I really don't want our chart to be like the Billboard :o (not official as such, but airplay and sales should never be mixed imo)
