September 15, 201212 yr The Maccabees were mediocre also-rans. I'd say no British indie band that emerged in the 2004-7 years and made the charts have shown anywhere near as much progression as The Maccabees have. 'Given To The Wild' is stunning. Edit: Thinking about it, it's not like they have much (any) competition really. Bloc Party did but they've killed all that with their recent album. Yea, they were probably rewarded because of their development, but I still think the album isn't worth the nomination. I have always assumed that the Mercury shortlist represents the 12 best British albums of the year but clearly it's not the case. It's much more complex and thus not really worth the attention the award is getting. By ignoring some obvious acts (Orbital and Kate Bush) the whole award loses its credibility. Of course it's possible that Orbital and Bush didn't want to be nominated but that's unlikely.
September 15, 201212 yr Author Kate Bush may not have submitted her album at all. She's refused lots of accolades in the past. Only 250 albums were submitted.
September 19, 201212 yr Impossible Princess is in my opinion the only album by Kylie that would have fitted the mercury prize so i do feel it was shamefully ignored, that said, the UK market in general ignored the album.
September 19, 201212 yr Plus she's not the correct nationality for the competition. It's a shame Kate didn't submit. I'm still waiting for the Brits lifetime achievement award.

September 19, 201212 yr Author  It's a shame Kate didn't submit. I'm still waiting for the Brits lifetime achievement award. She's been offered it, I believe. But turned it down. They should announce it as hers anyway, and show any footage that they are allowed to and say she refused to accept it. Edited September 19, 201212 yr by AnthonyT
