2010-2011 Primetime Emmy Awards ::

"Thursday, July 14 – Nominations for the 63rd Primetime Emmy® Awards, covering the eligibility period of June 1, 2010 through May 31, 2011, were announced today by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences from the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre in North Hollywood, California. Television Academy Chairman and CEO John Shaffner presided over the nominations along with Mike & Molly’s Melissa McCarthy, and Joshua Jackson from the FOX drama Fringe. Five of the twelve nominated Comedy and Drama series are first time nominees this year, and seven of the twelve are network programs. New among the outstanding drama series nominees are Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones and Friday Night Lights; for outstanding comedy series, first time nominees are The Big Bang Theory and Parks and Recreation. Programs receiving ten or more nominations are Mildred Pierce, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, Modern Family, Saturday Night Live, Game of Thrones, 30 Rock, Glee, Downton Abbey, Too Big To Fail, American Idol and The Kennedys. This year’s outstanding comedy series performer categories feature a slew of familiar faces being recognised with an Emmy nomination for the first time, or for the first time in these particular comedy roles. They include: (leads) Melissa McCarthy in Mike & Molly, Martha Plimpton in Raising Hope, Laura Linney in The Big C, Johnny Galecki in The Big Bang Theory, Matt LeBlanc in Episodes, and Louis C.K. in Louie; (supporting performers) Betty White in Hot in Cleveland and Ed O’Neill in Modern Family; (guests) Elizabeth Banks and Matt Damon in 30 Rock, Gwyneth Paltrow and Dot-Marie Jones in Glee, Cloris Leachman in Raising Hope, Idris Elba in The Big C, Nathan Lane in Modern Family and Zach Galifianakis in Saturday Night Live. This marks Betty White’s 17th Emmy nomination and Cloris Leachman’s 22nd.

Similar to the comedy categories, the outstanding drama series performer categories are comprised of many new nominees, including: (leads) Kathy Bates in Harry’s Law, Mireille Enos in The Killing, Steve Buscemi in Boardwalk Empire and Timothy Olyphant in Justified; (supporting performers) Margo Martindale and Walton Goggins in Justified, Kelly Macdonald in Boardwalk Empire, Michelle Forbes in The Killing, Josh Charles and Alan Cumming in The Good Wife and Peter Dinklage in Game of Thrones; (guests) Mary McDonnell in The Closer, Julia Stiles in Dexter, Loretta Devine in Grey’s Anatomy, Randee Heller and Cara Buono in Mad Men, Joan Cusack in Shameless, Alfre Woodard in True Blood, Bruce Dern in Big Love, Beau Bridges in Brothers & Sisters, Michael J. Fox in The Good Wife, Paul McCrane in Harry’s Law and Jeremy Davies in Justified. This year the Primetime Emmy Awards merged the miniseries and movie program categories to be consistent with the longstanding consolidation in longform individual achievement categories; e.g., lead and supporting actor and actress in movies and miniseries. The merger resulted in four nominations for miniseries and two for movies. First-time nominees in lead performance categories for miniseries and movie include Elizabeth McGovern in Downton Abbey, Kate Winslet in Mildred Pierce, Taraji P. Henson in Taken From Me: The Tiffany Rubin Story, Edgar Ramirez in Carlos, Greg Kinnear in The Kennedys and Idris Elba in Luther. Additional firsttime nominees in supporting performance categories for miniseries and movie include Evan Rachel Wood, Melissa Leo, Guy Pearce and Brian F. O’Byrne in Mildred Pierce, and Paul Giamatti and James Woods in Too Big To Fail.

The 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE on Sunday, September 18th at 8pm EDT/5pm PDT on the FOX Network. This year’s telecast will be executive produced by Mark Burnett and will be hosted by Jane Lynch. The Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be executive produced by Spike Jones Jr. and take place on Saturday, September 10th." (Via Academy of Television Arts & Sciences)

I'm absolutely thrilled for Parks and Recreation, although they're obviously not going to win (despite season three potentially being the most critically acclaimed comedy series this year). I would love to see Jon Hamm and Steve Carrell finally win but they'll probably go with Steve Buscemi and Jim Parsons (snooze). 'Game of Thrones' and 'Boardwalk Empire' are surely the current favourites but 'The Suitcase' (Mad Men) was just one of those incredible, mesmerising episodes that rarely grace television - I could actually see Elisabeth Moss beating Julianna Margulies (poor woman) for her performance in that.

The critical love of Modern Family has reached obscene levels now.

I'm rooting for big wins from The Good Wife and Downton Abbey but realistically I only expect Julianna Margulies to win outstanding actress (which would be a hell of a result obviously). Anything Downton comes away with will be a bonus.

I'd also very much like for Laura Linney and Idris Elba to come away with wins in their respective categories. A bit peeved that The Big C missed out on a best comedy nom.

If Julianna doesn't win there is something wrong with the world. I'm not even saying that because I love the show so much, she was utterly sensational in the last 5/6 episodes of S2.

The general opinion (blogs, prediction sites etc) leading up to the nominations seemed to be that Modern Family declined in quality quite a bit from the first season. They're obviously unstoppable at this point though.

OH PARKS AND RECREATION I LOVE THEE. The fact it was even nominated is incredible (despite the critical love) and I really thought they wouldn't get nominated due to competing with all the other shows from the NBC comedy block. The Big Bang Theory and Glee should have been swapped with The Big C and Community (or even Nurse Jackie again).

Well Josh Charles, Christine Baranski, Archie Panjabi and Julianna Marg make up the main cast of Good Wife and they're all nominated!
She was, but so was Elisabeth Moss. I definitely think it'll be between them.

I don't watch/like Mad Men so I obviously can't comment on that but she'd have to be pretty damn brilliant to be on the level Julianna was bringing in those episodes.

What I want.

What I think.

I think it's more likely just because Dexter has been on air longer and Boardwalk getting practically the full set in its first season seems unlikely.

It should be Timothy Olyphant though. He's excellent and the show could use some Emmy win publicity.

I just can't imagine Steve Buscemi losing (Golden Globe, SAG) and especially not to Michael C. Hall - he's already had enough opportunities to win but hasn't. They'll probably want to go with a hot new favourite seeing how Bryan Cranston is out for a year and they do love rewarding actors known for their movie work. I'd even say Timothy Olyphant is more likely than Hall. I think Jon Hamm's last chance will be next year with the extended hiatus and some added hype (or the last season).

Edited by ▲▲▲

Basically, The Good Wife, The Big C and Parks and Pec. should just win everything and Emmy be done wit' it.

Yes, I don't even root for 30 Rock this year :(

I hope Michelle Forbes gets it for The Killing - but the buzz on IMDb is that she'll be shamefully overlooked.

Kath

Michelle Forbes' performance is a bit one note. Grief - and that's it. Played out over 13 episodes. It's a bit of a double edged sword because The Killing being in 'real time' (ish - one day per episode) means by the end of the series the family are still grieving but seeing grief played out every single episode gets a bit dull. I'd say Brent Sexton who plays her husband does a better job of keeping it varied.

I've just noticed Kyra Sedgwick hasn't been nominated again, Julianna Margulies really was robbed last year. :manson:

It's a bit of a double edged sword because The Killing being in 'real time' (ish - one day per episode) means by the end of the series the family are still grieving but seeing grief played out every single episode gets a bit dull. I'd say Brent Sexton who plays her husband does a better job of keeping it varied.

How come you've seen all 13 episodes already Jark? What channel was it on before?
