I haven't been on BJ for ages but thought I would post the comments made by Sir Tim Rice when Joe sang at Durham Cathedral yesterday evening. It was a charity carol concert in aid of SAFC Foundation and was in the presence of the Countess of Wessex. A lot of people from the North-East were on the bill, such as Rick Wakeman, Barbara Dickson, and Sir Thomas Allen (Chancellor of Durham University and notable opera singer). Joe appears to have been the star of the show according to TV and press reports. He sang When a Child Is Born, In the Bleak Midwinter, and A Winter's Tale for which Sir Tim wrote another verse for Joe to sing. Sir Tim was in the audience at the Festival Hall when I was there recently at Joe's concert. He applauded enthusiastically - with a standing ovation!

Of his young co-star Joe McElderry, the X Factor winner from South Tyneside, he was full of praise.

“He’s a fantastic singer and when I realised he was from the North East I got on to him pretty promptly. I’d seen him on TV and I went to one of his concerts.

“In his show he sings things like Nessun Dorma. I don’t think Joe wants to be an opera singer but he sings operatic arias beautifully and he could certainly be in a West End show. He has a great voice and he commands a stage very well.” Joe was equally full of his praise, saying: “I’m very excited to here. I was asked along by Sir Tim Rice and I couldn’t believe it. It’s a great honour.”

Joe has performed in quite a lot of the North East’s famous venues but he said this was his debut in Durham Cathedral.

Thanks for that. I knew about this performance but nice to hear what Tim Rice said exactly and high praise indeed. I was also at RFH! Where we you sitting? I may have seen you and not known it :)

I was in the stalls, Row G on an aisle seat, right in the middle. Brilliant seat which I was offered quite late on. Fantastic show, one of the best I have seen.

I was lucky enough to be front row but its such a lovely venue great view from everywhere. That standing ovation for CDT seemed like it went on for months! I went to 3 shows in the tour but RFH was the best one I thought. Stunning.

Mornng yes i do love Joe (a lot) but there's plenty of people on Buzzjack who openly have favourite artists and this is a thread about Joe. Difference here is that I like a lot of other things too and contribute to many other threads/discussions. I don't come on here deliberately to make a one artist look bad, when the facts say he's actually doing quite well for himself. Of course people can disagree that's the whole point of a discussion but we all know that Joecomments is not doing that. The poster I am talking about didn't answer any of the very valid points I made in answer to his post about Joe's chart record for Classic, he just made very negative ones for the sake of it.

I certainly won't be answering any of his posts directly anymore just pointless tbh.

The problem was that you didn't present any argument to support your view. You asked rhetorically for example if The Wanted's bubble has burst as their latest album isn't doing well. Their first album, issued the same time as Joe's, has been certified double platinum (600,000 shipments): Joe's first album has sold 100,000 (actual sales but as far as I know, there has been no great increase in shipments) in that time. Their second album (the one you said was doing worse than Joe's 3rd album) sold 47,500 in its first week: Joe's 3rd album sold 34,000. In any case, The Wanted did not have the benefit of winning the X Factor to give their career a boost.

If you want to make a valid point about Joe's sales, rather than just gushing about him (as in 'He's very good looking'), you'd have to present an analysis of his sales and career progression compared to others which proved your point. As demonstrated above, even a quick examination of The Wanted's sales destroys your point about them. This is what rational, fact based argument is about, rather than just attacking the person making the argument.

Joecomments you have previously been asked to stop with the anti joe trolling. Any more examples and I will have to increase your warning and/or close the thread again.

How pathetic your life has to be to spend your time in "revealing the truth" behind the great myth of mighty Joe McElderry. I didn't believe when I saw the twitter account but you are going too far my friend. It's good to know you have what appears to be your rational side apart from angry troll ranting one on twitter but this is just too much. People would think Joe is megastar with the dedication you invested in "revealing the truth" about him. I guess you should be a subject to some psychiatric observance so I won't spend any more characters on joecomments.

Anyway, Classic is #76 and Classic Christmas is #25. Nice to see Classic is holding pretty well. As for CC, well.. after I saw how many Christmas releases there are this year I didn't actually expect any better. I am glad, tho, to see a couple of CC plays here and there on radio stations.

Looking at the sales figures Joe could have sold 20k plus at #25, hope he can mantain that for the next two weeks and go gold. Slightly more promo this week. Still not enough in my view but happy enough :)

I certainly don't want to fall foul of the rules. Can you explain how it works? I thought people came to Buzzjack for accurate and lively analysis of the music scene and of the charts in particular (well that's what I get from it anyway). So in response to someone else comparing Joe McElderry and The Wanted I replied purely quoting their respective chart figures to show that the comparison as a matter of FACT is not made out. I didn't actually make any comment about Joe good or bad.

Are you saying that you are only allowed to make positive comments about Joe on Buzzjack - even to the extent of not comparing his chart stats with other artists if the comparison is not favourable? I genuinely want to know this because if Buzzjack is now a fan site for Joe McElderry it's helpful to know when considering how accurate the information it gives about his chart and sales figures is likely to be (same goes for any other site of course: you want to know if it allows a range of discussion and views or whether it's purely one sided).

You've totally missed my point. Comparison is fine, discussion is fine, but what you do goes beyond that and is, effectively, anti-joe trolling. I'm not asking you to stop making negative comments, I'm asking you to at least TRY and be a little objective in your responses. Make your comparisons FAIR, The Wanted and Joe are aimed at very different markets, it's like comparing apples and bricks. Redundant and annoying for the rest of us to read through.
So it looks like Joe sold around 25k of Classic Christmas this week and at least 6.5k of Classic Not too shabby :)
Really nice sales B-)

Nice to see Classic is not giving up.

Yes I think it will find it's way into a few Christmas stockings :)

I saw a lady in BHS looking on the CD stand and was so pleased when she found the Classic album. I said that it is a lovely album and she should look at getting the Christmas one, to which she replied that she is getting it in her Christmas stocking! :D

Although Classic and Classic Christmas have and are seemingly doing very well for Joe, I wonder if he will record an actual studio album of new material rather than covering songs..

Could be a gamble but is it one the label and he will take? Or will he just keep to recording covers and release an album of all that for Mothers day etc

In the interview on OK TV he said that there will be new material on his next album but also some standards. I refuse to call them "covers"!

He has just been on Breakfast talking about Classic Christmas and the O2 performances when he introduces the Birmingham Royal Ballet's The Nutcracker. He will be singing with a 72 piece orchestra, some carols and songs from his album.

Yeah I think a mix of the two is the best way to go for Joe on the next album. If he goes straight to all new stuff he could lose some of the audience he gained back with Classic. This way he gets people used to some new stuff alongside some great covers (hopefully) We don't want another Wide Awake scenario ie a really good album that misses its target audience because of pre concieved ideas.

Think a mixture is the best way to go for Joe but really hope with more time and experience he can give his own interpretations when covering material instead of just giving carbon copies.

Fair enough but not everyone has heard the original he is "copying" from. He is probably given the arrangement as he hasn't the experience to do his own arrangements. Some of the tracks on both Classic and Classic Christmas are not the same as the originals that I have heard.

Yes agreed and I actually think it's quite nice that a lot of his young fans who for example wouldn't dream of listening to TTSG or Nessun Dorma appreciate them now. Has anyone else done a Big Band style Driving Home for Christmas like Joe? I actually like what he's done with it.
