ARIA Charts Commentary

from Gavin Ryan

Shakira stays at the top of the chart for the seventh week, now surpassing

the six weeks stint she achieved with her debut Australian single "Whenever,

Wherever" back in February 2002. It is now tied in third place for the longest

run at No.1 for this decade. The other seven week chart-topper is The Pussycat

Dolls "Don't Cha" from Aug/Sep/Oct 2005.

Speaking of the Pussycat Dolls, their new single "Buttons" debuts at No.2

this week becoming their fourth Australian Top 3 single. The above mentioned

"Don't Cha" was their highest placed single at No.1, and that was followed in

January 2006 with the No.2 single "Stickwitu", and in April they reached No.3

with "Beep". Their last single featured guest vocalist Will.i.am from The Black

Eyed Peas, whilst "Buttons" features guest vocalist Snoop Dogg, who is also on

the charts with Mariah Carey at No.30 on the track "Say Somethin'". The high

debut also pulls their album "PCD" into the Top 10 for the first time, this week

it's at No.8.

The Top 6 this week is estrogenly fueled by the female sex, the only males

are guest vocalists in their world. The last time that their was such a

domination of women so high up the charts was back on December 2nd, 2002, where

the Top 8 were all by female artists.

Another girl debuts in the Top 10 this week at No.9. Kasey Chambers' new

single "Nothing at All" is the first single off her forthcoming "Carnival" album

(due out August 19th). This is her fourth Top 10 single, and she was last up

this high back in January 2005 when "Pony" reached No.10. Her biggest single of

course was the March 2002 No.1 single "Not Pretty Enough", and she will be

touring the country this October and November in support of the album.

Two new entries back-to-back at 14 and 15 this week. The second single for

Ne'Yo comes in at No.14, this one is "Sexy Love", and is currently No.19 on the

US charts, and it's the follow-up to his No.4 single "So Sick" which is at No.35

this week.

At No.15 is the former UK No.1 single (June 4th, 2006), "I Wish I Was a Punk

Rocker (With Flowers in My Hair)". Sandi Thom is the performer, who decided to

forgoe the tedious business of traveling the country to play gigs, instead she

performed live on a webcam from her London home, thus creating a bigger audience

for herself.

At No.34 is the follow-up to the longest running single this year (and still

counting at 34 weeks), "Amazing" by Westlife is the second single from their

former No.1 album "Face to Face". The single "You Raise Me Up" is still in the

charts at No.17 this week, and "Amazing" became their 20th consecutive Top 5

single in the UK back in March.

For the first time in Australian chart history, a Disney Soundtrack has

reached the No.1 spot on the album charts. The "High School Musical" Soundtrack

moves from 2 to 1 this week, and in doing so becomes the 37th Soundtrack to hit

the No.1 spot in this country. The last such album was exactly 2 years ago this

week (July 26th, 2004), when the "Shrek 2" Soundtrack was at the top of the

charts for a single week.

It's also the first time that the words "High", "School" and "Musical" have

appeared in a No.1 album title, although you could possibly count "The Main

Event (Highlights)" from December 1998, but I'm not counting it!!

Whilst it is the 37th No.1 Soundtrack, it is also the 30th Various Artists

Soundtrack, in that not one single performer is doing the soundtrack (like

Purple Rain, or Beaches; of which there are four of these).

It's the 16th No.1 album for 2006, and the 527th No.1 album in the past 46

years.

Three albums re-enter the Top 10 this week. "Stadium Arcadium" for the Red

Hot Chili Peppers is back in at No.7, the Pussycat Dolls reach a new peak of

No.8 with their "PCD" album, and Rihanna reclaims her highest peak of No.9 with

her album "A Girl Like Me".

The highest new entries this week are by the same man. Billy Joel first hit

the album charts in August 1974 with his Piano Man album. With the release of

his new live album "12 Gardens Live" and it's subsequent debut at No.24, it

helps pull his "Piano Man-The Very Best of" back into the charts at No.18,

giving it a new highest peak.

The Morning TV show "Sunrise" has always put on live performances for it's

visiting musical guests, and like The Panel album before it, "Sunrise Live"

features those very performances on one CD, and it this week debuts at No.26.

Lastly, Jurassic 5 are back on the albums chart this week at No.36 with

their new album "Feedback". Their last chart entry was the Top 30 album from

October 2002, "Power in Numbers".
