Serena Williams On Britney Spears (And Being Lucky, Stronger, And Not Yet A Woman)

CINCINNATI--As the most followed tennis player on Twitter (with over 2.1 million followers), Serena Williams has a great deal of power and responsibility.

And as someone who was a teenager in 2000, Serena Williams also has a great deal of appreciation for semi-autobiographical Britney Spears ballads.

She's so Lucky. She's a star. But she cry, cry, cries in her lonely heart.

The song was likely put in her head by the Britney Spears/Nicki Minaj concert she went to Sunday night in Toronto (after winning the Rogers Cup title that afternoon).

But just how much does Serena relate to Lucky, the titular character of Britney Spears second single off the Oops...I Did It Again album? How much does Serena's fame cause tears to come at night?

After her 6-3, 7-6(5) win over Lucie Hradecka in the first round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, I decided to find out.

SBN: You talked about all your fans, and one place you have a lot of fans is on Twitter.

Serena Williams: Yeah...

SBN: Last night you tweeted some of the lyrics of Britney Spears single, Lucky.

Serena Williams: Uh huh...

SBN: Do you relate to Lucky's plight in that song about being a star, but crying on the inside?

Serena Williams: Um, I just love that song. I think it's funny, I always tweet lyrics a lot, and some people are always like, "Are you okay? What's going on?" I'm like, "You clearly don't know Britney Spears."

So I don't know. I just was singing that song in my head and I kind of just Tweeted it.

SBN: Are there other Britney songs that you relate to too? Do you ever feel like you're "stronger than yesterday," for example?

Serena Williams: I do! Definitely. I love that song, Stronger, I was just talking about it. And I often feel like I'm not a girl, not yet a woman. I don't know why, because clearly I'm a woman, but I still feel like I'm not yet.

SBN: Is there anyone who drives you crazy?

Serena Williams: (Laughs) What do you mean? A lot of people drive me crazy.

SBN: Anyone you want to name?

Serena Williams: Umm, that would probably be inappropriate. (Smiling.)
