I asked Vidcapper yesterday:

If Paul Simon had a 50% sales increase any idea what Will's was for his jump from #100 to #52 (a leap of 48 places).
His reply:

I would estimate a 90-100% increase. based on average sales for those positions.

Will's sales:

I did post that figure in the album chart thread. :D They all count.

Wish we had some official album figures. Would also like to know latest figures for The Hits.

Thanks munchkin.

So total sales ~476,500

Music week

Like Newton Faulkner, Will Young is struggling to get a hit. Jealousy, the introductory single from Young's current album, Echoes, reached number five last September - but subsequent singles Come On and Losing Myself peaked at 83 and 72 respectively, and fourth single I Just Want A Lover opens this week at number 115 (2,150 sales). Despite the single's struggles, Echoes bounces 100-52 (2,620 sales) this week, and has sold a very respectable 476,617 copies since its release in last year.

Thanks sunday. I'm really not that worried about his subsequent singles. Jealousy did the business and was a fabulous ambassador. The fact that Echoes is still trickle selling is a great bonus. He can be justifiably pleased and content that this Album has shaped up so well and he can move on to the next happy.

You only have to look at some of the big singles sellers sales with their albums sales - no comparison is there.

Made up for him

Martin, if that's the official figure then it's not so far from the estimates - not bad eh :P

That's the official figure, taken from the above script, what Sunday posted above you in the quote box.

I would have loved Echoes to pass 500k but considering he's had no huge promo after the first single I think Will and his label will be delighted with his return. Promo has to be paid for so Will have made a tidy sum for himself & the label. As for single sales it isn't rocket science, if you only have the backing of radio 2 you ain't going to shift single units. Just wish articles like the one in MW would acknowledge that.

His USP is his unique phenomenal voice and after seeing what a top class entertainer he has be one this tour I've no fears he will always have a career as long as he wants.

Releasing Echoes sems to have given Will such a renewed love for singing. I'm hoping that after Cabaret he'll be raring to get back into the studio. Can't wait to hear what he comes up with for the next album. As he said in The Hits Tour, that album drew a line under the sand, Echoes is just the beginning. :yahoo:

 I notice you copied my post before I corrected it TT. I misread his sales and thought it was 517 not 617 so he's actually sold more than was estimated

Sad that he wasn't supported as much as for Jealousy but it has got to have been his live performances and appearances that have been his best promotion :D Roll on #7 :yahoo:

P.S. you only have to see what lack of radio support has done for poor Alex. Some comments I've read claim her songs are rubbish, hence not being supported, but I've seen/heard far worse songs that get played on the radio ad nauseum and ride high in the charts thus getting huge download sales, only to not be able to come back with a second single and piss-poor album sales.

But then the way people buy music is totally different nowadays and it seems that some single chart music buyers care nothing for albums, instead opting for cherry picking. And it seems to me that when you see comments about him being washed up/over/not relevant(whatever the hell THAT means) they are most likely coming from some people who only follow what's going on in the singles chart and totally ignoring and/or unaware of what goes on outside of it.

If he's only 23k off the half a million mark for Echoes that says to me he will get there, even if sales drop to 500 a week. :D We know all his albums keep selling, and I bet when album #7 drops it wil kickstart Echoes anyway!
Oh just thought, probably the next stat will be The Hits reaching double platinum.. :cheer:

Yes that would be lovely too and that sold loads more because of his promo and touring, because he didn't have a hit single off it as "Hopes and Fears" didn't get much airplay apart from good ol' radio2. ^_^

Would think The Hits must be over 590k by now. :D Wish we knew exact figures. Think this will benefit most as further albums are released.

Not so sure about Echoes making 500k with sales being so low but I do hope you are right.

Yes, definitely but the good thing about Echoes is that Jealousy is there and not on the Hits, so I think it will lure latecomers to the album.
