Posted September 2, 201113 yr West's Top 175 Songs of the 1990's I decided to do a countdown of my favourite songs of the 1990's, also my favourite decade for music. Songs broken down by release year: 9x 1990 15x 1991 11x 1992 13x 1993 12x 1994 14x 1995 24x 1996 27x 1997 28x 1998 11x 1999 The years of 1996-1998 were particularly stellar for me. It was when I started to listen & buy music regularly; however, I did try to incorporate the entire decade as much as possible, even when I was quite young in the early 90's. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did making the list! September 6, 201113 yr Some good choices already so far! 175 Moby - Bodyrock (1999) 173 Smash Mouth - Walkin' On The Sun (1997) 172 Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta (1998) 171 Bonnie Raitt – Something To Talk About (1991) 169 Janet Jackson - Together Again (1997) 168 Alanis Morissette - You Learn (1995) 163 Michael Jackson - Black Or White (1991) 162 Madonna - Justify My Love (1990) 161 Jennifer Lopez - If You Had My Love (1999) I shamefully LOVE If You Had My Love. I don't even care about Jennifer Lopez in general but it would probably be in my top 100 of the 1990s if I was doing one (or at least not far off!). It's the Darkchild magic that does it, of course; everything he touched turned to gold back then and this is definitely one of his better productions of that time for me. Justify My Love is also one of Madonna's very best. I've noticed it seems to be a tad underrated in the greater scheme of her back catalogue which is a shame. Obviously the melody takes a back seat here but the beat is incredible, the lurking atmosphere and feel of the track is ELECTRIC and it still sounds very fresh to these ears 20+ years later. Love it! If anything it should be higher IMO. I only heard that Smash Mouth song for the first time last year(!) but it's pretty good. Better than their "other" famous track All Star, for sure. Flagpole Sitta is another I've only heard in the last couple of years but again, it's pretty good. You Learn is probably the worst JLP single for me. In fact it's one of the few tracks on that album that I really don't like much, really. Hopefully some of the others are higher! Edited September 6, 201113 yr by superbossanova

IYHML is such a great song & she really hasn't put out anything nearly as brilliant since it in 1999. I didn't realize it was Darkchild who produced the track, but it makes so much sense. As the whole persona of J-Lo, I can't stand. She's a bad actress, awful singer, alright dancer, but given the right music, can put out a decent track. Justify My Love is a song that feels so haunting, yet hypnotic throughout the whole thing. It's one of her finest that is almost always overlooked, maybe due to the racy video, which was so appropriate during her place in the early 90's. Making a best of countdown of the 90's was SO difficult, that even a song not cracking the Top 150 is still a 10/10 in my eyes. I'm surprised you hadn't heard the Smash Mouth & Harvey Danger songs until recently :o They were staples for me in the late 90's but they probably received less attention in the UK. It's too bad that it was the terrible All Star that made SM well-known. I adore You Learn. Back in the day, I would probably consider it one of my top Alanis singles, but with time it seems it has wanned some. Don't fret thought, as Alanis does appear more than once on the countdown :D Thank you so much for commenting! I hope you continue to do so as I count down. :) Edited September 8, 201113 yr by West

Don't fret thought, as Alanis does appear more than once on the countdown :D Thank you so much for commenting! I hope you continue to do so as I count down. :) Think you hit the nail on the head with J-Lo there. She's definitely the least musically talented "major star" I can think of. Her success has always been dependent on massive media presence and hooking up with the right music producers. Generally speaking, if I like the producer she's working with I know I'll probably like the song. And Darkchild is a massive favourite of mine so, unsurprisingly, I adore IYHML. Yeah, I only started following the charts and music really closely in 1999, so a lot of US-only hits from before then I've only just heard in the last few years. Flagpole Sitta only got to #57 here in July 1998! I discovered it when I was looking through old UK charts for some "lost hits" to add to my mp3 collection and saw it on one of them and checked it out on YouTube. Walkin' On The Sun was actually a higher charter than All Star here, surprisingly, but it definitely feels like the latter is more remembered here to me. You Learn always felt flimsy and 'basic' to me :( Not a bad song per sé but on a hit-packed album like Jagged Little Pill it would definitely be one of the few I'd skip. I guess its simplicity is the key so I'm probably missing the point a bit with it but oh well. And you're welcome! :D I know I'd hate to have spent ages on a list and be counting it down to myself, ha. I'm always interested in a 90s list by anyone though, very curious to see what's near the top! My thoughts on the next group of 10 coming up momentarily... (didn't want to do it in this post or it'd be far too long!)
September 8, 201113 yr 160 Beastie Boys - Intergalactic (1998) 159 Robbie Williams - Millennium (1999) 158 Beck - Loser (1994) 156 Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away (1991) 155 Sarah McLachlan - Building A Mystery (1997) 152 U2 - Mysterious Ways (1991) 151 Madonna - Frozen (1998) Intergalatic is ridiculously good! Brilliant gritty electro sound. I remember seeing the video on Top of the Pops when it charted here and even as a fan of mostly commercial pop music then I still thought it was groovy as hell (forgot about it for years after that though, until I got more retrospective rather than only enjoying music "from the time"). Loser is good and a classic but something stops me from loving it that I can't quite pinpoint. I feel similar with a lot of Beck's material though, as much as I have masses of respect for him. Maybe I would have liked it more if I was there "at the time", I don't know. Mysterious Ways - one of U2's best from an excellent era for them. Groovy as hell (again!) but it works. Is The Fly still to come? :D Silverchair and R.E.M. are not my bag at all. Sarah McLachlan is ok but she has better, this one is sorely lacking in anything memorable.

Intergalatic was definitely one of those surprise hits that crossed over to pop. Looking back now, the video was so bizarre & unconventional compared to anything else out at the time. I'm not a huge fan of Beck, but Loser is his best & like you said, I appreciate his music more than listen to it as well. I love Mysterious Ways, showed a more up-beat sound from a band who tended to be rather serious in the early 90's. Unfortunately, The Fly didn't make the cut. Glad you are finding a lot of the songs 'groovy', I quite agree. I can see Silverchair not being for everyone, they were nostalgic in the 90's grunge sense, but their sound has evolved nice over the past decade thought.
